I’m thinking about joining an escalation campaign that begins at 500 points and was wondering if the AoS Spearheads are a decent starting point since the forces I’m contemplating (Deathrattle or Skaven) are legacy armies.

Skaven aren't legacy iirc; they just got new models.

The thing about 40k is that no one person can grasp the fullness of it.

Deathrattle just got a new wave of models earlier this year. Should be pretty safe.

Some of the Cursed City models are on warning that they are going to be dropped next June. But half pf them could be used as generic replacements.

Edit:
Woops. Just noticed this was in the old world forum. Who knows what will happen with the way GW is trying to keep things seperate.

The Deathrattle Spearhead would give a good base for an Old World Vampire Counts army - either Legacy or the Squarebased Renegade pack. You get models that could be used as a Wight Lord, a unit of 20 Skeleton Warriors, 10 x Grave Guard and 5 x Black Knights. You will still need a Vampire or Necromancer model (can’t just have a Wight Lord), but a single model should be easy to generate.

It won’t all be able to taken at 500 or even under 1000 points due to some tough restrictions, but I think it would be a solid start. You’d need to source square bases.

Not sure what the future holds for Legacy armies in TOW. Squarebased will continue to support legacy armies for the near term. Perhaps GW will follow the money and heal the rift? The AOS models look great though, and if you have some square bases the Spearhead looks like an enticing entry!

Vampire Counts also play very strong these days…

All you have to do is fire three rounds a minute, and stand

Awesome, thank you all for the info.

I haven’t played in 20 years, but a local store is starting a slow grow league. I have dwarfs and chaos, but my painting has changed in twenty years and I’m not a fan of repainting things (so look for them on eBay! ). Looks like it’s time to raise the dead!

Vampires are the best legacy faction without a doubt but don’t sleep on chaos. Especially with the new marauders coming at some point. They look amazing!

I watched a YouTube video earlier today about Tourneys in Europe and vampires did extremely well at them but they added some homebrew rules since it was Halloween. Still I think with the renegade pack (see square base for it), they are quite competitive.

Good luck man - the game is a lot of fun to play.
