The avatars molten form rules says,

“each time an attack is allocated to this model, halve the damage characteristic of that attack”, would you still halve the damage of devastating wounds as the rule them says you still go through the process of allocating attacks against the model (thus halving the damage characteristic) then inflict a number of mortals equal to the Damage characteristic of that attack, now halved? Or am I missing something?

In My Lab

I believe there was an FAQ or Errata clarifying that you apply damage reduction/halving BEFORE DevWounds, so if you took a D12 DevWound (like from a Thundercoil Harpoon) the Avatar would only take 6 Mortal Wounds.

I cannot find it at this moment, though.

Yep in the rules commnetary: Modifying a Damage Characteristic and Devastating Wounds.
