One of my friends bought the Iron Hands Combat Patrol box set.

100 pts
• 1x Heavy Intercessor w/Heavy Bolter
• 3x Heavy Intercessors

That's the entire box.

Because GW models aren't free, I wanted to ask your advice before handing out some myself.

I was planning on telling him to make his list an Anvil Siege Detachment due to this ability:

Shield of the Imperium: Ranged weapons equipped by Adeptus Astartes models from your army have the [HEAVY] ability. If such a weapon already has this ability, each time an attack is made with that weapon, if the attacking model's unit Remained Stationary this turn, add 1 to the Wound roll.
Rules
Heavy: Weapons with [HEAVY] in their profile are known as Heavy weapons. Each time an attack is made with such a weapon, if the attacking model’s unit Remained Stationary this turn, add 1 to that attack’s Hit roll

And telling him to buy a Gladiator Lancer for tank killing fun.

In the games we've played, he likes to sit on objectives and never move.

(Probably because his army is so sloooooow)

What do you recommend?

Need more context - this for "funsies" type games, are they an experienced warhermmerist or table top gamer? What sort of models do they like?

Sounds like they prefer to bunker up and that simply isn't a winning tactic usually in honesty, but iron hands also love dreads, so get one of 1 maybe in the short term with some more infantry to fill in the blanks + another techpriest to support them

While camping and just tossing fire downrange is a thing, 40k had a lot of objectives you need to get boots onto eventually.

You can either go with fast movers, deployment tricks, deep strike, or whatever floats your boat. But you need some sort of plan to contest the mid/backfield.

We have a lot of tools in our arsenal, so which one you want to roll with depends a lot on personal taste. Especially at the casual level.

He is new to the game, we've only played Combat Patrol games.

I doubt he will be a Tournament contender any time soon....

But I need him to have some anti-tank as I only have Custodes and Knights to throw at him right now.

The firestrikes should be able to threaten big stuff, but are static. And the heavy intercessors will be able to help chip with +1 to wound from the detachment.

But some mobile AV is not a bad call.

How many pts are you looking at as a "real army"? 1k? 2k?

Anyways, if he's playing Iron Hands? Start with this guy:

No idea what he does, but he looks cool.

After that he needs about 700 more pts of AT (split into several units) in addition to that Lancer if he's going to be fighting Knights/Custodes alot.

And has been said, some way to take midfield objectives &/or do secondaries.
