I keep staring at the blank canvas that is the Space Marine Ancient.
Anyone have any reasonable advice on painting these intimidating nightmares?

Which one in particular?
Combo of paint and decals works for most of them.

The Crusade Ancient, which looks cool, is intimidating due to the large shield.
The other banners have less open space.

Indiana Jones it? Halve or quarter the shield and scribble little lines on one side or opposing quarters. You cut down the size just like that. And you'll be able to work with multiple colors, which adds extra definition.

You can use pin stripe tape to do stripes on the shield, and you can also use waterslide decals for any symbols you you want to put on it.

For that Iād do the fabric in a solid color for the backdrop. Shield should be reasonably easy to tape to quarter/half, with decals, either a big one in the center, or smaller ones if you bisect/quarter.
