How do!
Article

Model
Basically, if you spend £100+ in a single transaction, you get this little fella free. Begins 31st Jan, whilst stocks last.
For those interested with no nearby store, it will be considered Loot for Loot Group purposes (see my sig). Currently agreeing price with the other admins, but I’m currently in favour of £24, as that’s the asking price for other plastic, single model exclusives.
Also curiously? Doesn’t mention foreign currency qualifying spends. Could be a pre-regionalised article, could be UK only. Wait. Ignore that last bit. Says ask staff for local currency.

The article does actually say while stocks last, annoyingly. But put me down for one from the group.

Well I guess that's how they plan to try and fix the slow retail sales from the larger UK stores mentioned in the annual report.

Part of it. It’s a way to get feet through the door, and from there invite to take part in other things to encourage more regular visits, and from there, hopefully purchases.

I quite like it, a shame it requires a £100 spend.

Meh.
I still haven't finished assembling the last chaos Dwarf I got from free model of the month.
I was hoping for another marine. I actually need moar Marines! Especially if they have tactical rocks or tactical floors!

It’s kinda subjective.
If it’s a model you’re not interested in? Continue your usual shopping habits, for instance your preferred online discounter.
If it’s a model you’re interested in? Great, if your budget stretches to the qualifying spend. If it doesn’t? I’m sure they’ll turn up on eBay and Marketplace.
Loot Group wise, if we price it in-line with other exclusive models? At £24, it’s offsetting any discount one might miss out on shopping with GW direct. Of course that’s reliant on folk selling it on.

Point being if putting the bar at £100 minimum to qualify for this is going to change peoples purchasing habits or routines... I can only speak for myself though and thats what I did.
This is not impulse buy kind of money.

True. But it’s not necessarily outside of someone’s monthly budget.
I don’t intend to tell anyone how deep their own pocket is or should be of course. But in the grand scheme of things? £100 isn’t a huge amount these days.
As I touched on above? This is essentially Traffic Bait. Something to tempt people into store to spend their money. And from there? Give staff some fresh material to work with.
So, with comments in the 6m report about wanting to increase in-store sales? This would be head office doing their part.
To me? It’s a nice wee bonus if I’m simply not just spending to get a freebie. Whilst, pocket wise, I can fairly comfortably hit the spending requirement three times in a month? I’m not daft enough to spend for the sake of spending.
If there’s £300 worth of stuff I want, and I can break it down into three qualifying spends across three stores? I’ll do so. I don’t expect I’ll have much trouble slinging spares on.
If there’s only £100 worth? Or £200? Then that’s what I’ll spend.
Heck, if the Glaive is out, or up for pre-order this month? That’s something I absolutely do want, and a qualifying spend in its own right. I could also be persuaded to get a brace of Whirlwinds, and the Missile Tarantulas to convert one into the Hyperion. That’s another qualifying spend. And all on stuff which I’m wanting anyway.

I think that hobby budget and impulse buys are very different things since one is planned and rational while the other is exactly the opposite.
I also believe if their brick stores are facing a downturn in sales volume then yes this can potentially help a bit, not sure if relevant enough to invert the tendency.
Also matters little if you have a budget of X or Y for the hobby since the goal is boosting their own store sales more than anything... people still buy GW more than other miniatures, but just not at their stores as much as they wish.
You allocate £300 for miniatures and thats ok but in this case it matters little to them if you dont buy from them, directly in store.
Like I said budget is planned and so are shopping habits, to alter that on a personal level it will need to be better than a £100 wall.
The reason I mentioned impulse is that you break routines and plans and become a bit temperamental and go for that sweet mini that you like, regarding of what you initially planed... but a £100 gets you back to reality really fast.
I believe retail in general is struggling in this economy, I was in London and before Christmas there was already plenty of deep discounts going on... mad.

Is definitely a perk, rather than must have.
Me? I think it’s long established I’m a filthy slag when it comes to exclusive models, so I’m very easily baited.
That I know I’ll be able to sell one on, at a reasonable RRP and so get one for me, and (depending entirely on how you look at it!) a wee discount from selling the other/s when it’s stuff I’m almost certainly getting ASAP anyways? I’m a dead cert to go for it.
But, if someone is only wanting a couple of things (say, a box of MkII/III/VI and a Special Weapon set)? If that, as in my example takes you quite close to the £100? (Around £85), the temptation of a free model may be sufficient to coax that extra £15 via glue, brushes, paint, White Dwarf etc/
That’s how I increased my Average Transaction all those years ago. Do that across as many customers as possible? And it seriously adds up. Best of all? Done right, I’m less upselling, and more getting the customer to remember the peripherals they’ll likely need.
Like plastic glue. I know I’m a sod for forgetting to keep a stock of that (well, a spare). And whether I really needed it there and then? It’s still something I’ll use in the end.

I get you 100% and I dont disagree...
But to make people extend their money to buy the little extras, glues and bits, to qualify... they need to have those potential £100+ clients going there in the first place. I think thats whats not happening.
Choosing to travel to a GW store instead of Independent stores with discounts across the board is quite a change of plans. I know that depends a lot from one area to another, for example London they are walking distance only. Yet I tend to land on Independent first thing.
Also a little note is that I dont think theres a majority of people going out of their ways for something so niche as a chaos dwarf, regardless how cool he is.
I welcome initiatives like this and more "freebies" is always good, maybe next time.

Lets face it if you were going to spend £100 on Chaos Dwarves then your choice is 3rd part or GW store and a 3rd part discount would be about what this model be priced at anyway. So consumer wise it basically makes the choice equal between a GW store or a 3rd party.
At least for this army, for this model and assuming you were (or are willing) to spend that much.
To be fair the starter set gets you 91% of the way there already; throw on a few paint/glue/etc options and you've got £100 quite easily.
It's almost a shame he didn't come out alongside the set itself or a little closer to its launch; but the army is still plenty new so should have a good many people eager to pick it up or able to justify a second/third starter set of models to expand their growing new army.

This. If this was for any of my armies I'd consider if I wanted to pay 20€ (or whatever currency) for that model, because that's basically what you pay if you forego the 20% you'd get elsewhere.

I’m definitely intrigued to see how this pans out. As a one off? Or if successful, the herald of a….erm…I think fifth (Store Anniversary, MTO, New/Relocated Store, Event) avenue for pretty precious geegaws. Actually sixth if we count Warhammer+.
I’d hope it’s not a very regular (monthly, bimonthly) thing, lest the special be eroded. But a couple a year I could live with.
Think I might plan for a £300 spend. One for me, two for peeps in the Loot Group that don’t have any local stores. Again, only as long as I’m not buying guff just to do the next person a solid.
