I'm sorry, and this is not a joke, but what are selective washes?
(this is from someone who only followed painting videos from the Warhammer YT channel and the Citadel app)
Warhammer YT tutorials are great!
In short:
Pre-apply water before a pin-wash
In long:
Selective wash It is not a term, I am trying to describe an action.
I guess is something between a (Pin Wash) and a (Wash)
When you need to darken or color tint the recesses without changing the surface color.
For example, I needed:
1 skin to be as pale as possible
2 but have darker recesses
3 and smooth transition from light to dark
4 and without painting it! all done with a wash.
5 and avoiding touching things up
The wash will do the heavy lifting for me, but If I wash dark-red over the face, the wash will also tint and darken the light areas and I will have to go back and touch those up.
So I pre-wet the face with (water), or (dishsoap/water) or (iso/water) to break surface-tension, and then apply a pin-wash into a recess. The wash flows but leaves the light areas, so I do not have to touch those up later.
Sometimes the surface is too matt (depends what primed was used), and the pin wash does not stay in the recess but creeps into the lighter areas, in that case I have to go back and touch things up.
Another example: I have light detail on light background, so pre-applied (iso/water) to pin-wash around the details, maybe 5 times or so trying different thinned paints until I was happy with the "outline" created for the detail.
So, try to pre-wet the surface and do some pin washes, it mihgt be helpful. Cheers!
