Any scale is fine, as long as it can be broadly classed as a mini.

Although if someone wants to do a 1:1 cosplay marine outfit in a month, I’d not say no to that. Pretty sure that would be more along the lines of the summer sidequest project, if even that.

It’s a plastic second ed. box set bolter hugger. All stripped now though. Just waiting for the rain to stop to get it primed.

It’s probably made of the bitter bitter tears of the business owners they steal all their best products from.

I’d say we might need the inquisition, especially the ordo xenos.

he’s fine.

We are about halfway through the month, so plan accordingly. Also, it’s a good time to toss around ideas for next month’s topic. As this is a new year, let’s go over some points that make a good topic:

It should be broad. Can it apply to both fantasy and sci fi? We want to include as many people as we can. Not everyone has a deep pile of shame or will want to buy something just for the comp. Not everyone plays 40k. (I know this month is a bad example, but it’s our traditional start, and SM are pretty prevalent in most collections)
Leave some room for interpretation. We want to inspire people and focus them on a direction, not railroad them onto a path.
Avoid hard requirements. There will never be an “airbrush” challenge for example as many of us just don’t have access to one. We cater to painters of all skill levels, and all ages.
Technical challenges are fine. We’ve had a few in the past. Where the topic is not the subject, but a style or technique.
Self serving ideas are fine. You have something on your bench you need help with? As long as your phrase the subject in a way that fits the other criteria, go for it.
Title should be short and sweet. Get the idea across in just a few words.
Give me the full description (optional) I’m much more likely to select a topic that already has the 2-5 sentences of full text I can just C/P into the body of the poll. I will probably edit it a little, but not having to generate all the fluff makes things easier for me, which is a good thing.
All topics going onto a big list even if they are not picked for the current month. If yours doesn’t make it into the poll, all is not lost. Although seasonal ones tied to specific times might have to wait a bit for their next chance.

Irregular: All’s fair in war. Not everyone is going to engage in a standup fight on a field of battle. Irregulars could be militia, guerrillas, mercenaries, or partisans. They could be warriors who specialize in hit and run warfare. Alternatively, you could interpret “irregular” to refer to a camo pattern that breaks up the shape of the subject.

So what you're saying is I should paint this month's entry instead of this completely unrelated thing I've been slapping paint on for most of the month? Huh, that doesn't sound like procrastination. Are you sure that works?

As for a new topic:

Jeepers Creepers Chaos Peepers - Paint something that deviates from the norm. Be it Chaos corruption or radioactive mutation, classic Frankensteining or bolting enough junk on a Toyota to make it fit for a Mad Max movie, as long as the original or intended form is corrupted/enhanced, it fits.

NewTopic: Id like to see technical challenge like a limited palette challenge. For me that is fun.

One is finished, if I have time I'll get the other one too.
Tried nmm again, still can't get it smooth.
There is not really any wiggle room with nmm, but I did try to cut some corners by not stripping the model and just painting over the old paint.

That is EPIC! love limited palette
Did you use airbrush to directional lighting? Or the smooth transitions done with a brush?

Last time I tried to buy something from them, like 3-4 years ago, they charged me shipping per item, more items I added to the basket the higher the shipping got.

I’m not going to tell you how to procrastinate. You need to follow your heart on that one. I took a little side quest on my entry to work on the mini of the month.

We could try a color theme, like “Seeing Red” or “Black and White” “Shades of Grey” Or more basic like “Green” and people could either go litteral with shades, or paint something evocative of the color, like green with envy or a zealot with a binary us/them world view. We did 3 color maximum once, to restrict people to a limited pallete. That was interesting.

Thanks ! Means a lot! =)

All done in oil paints actually after a dark blue/white zenithal with an airbrush.

I caved in an took out the cadmium red for the copper instead of magenta though, couldn't make a good red from what I had. I took a break from it to do something else, I need to finish that dude.

@Snafu
Top work sir!
I love to see when people use simple palettes or tools to squeeze maximum impact and payoff.

Oils, interesting...
The only time I used oils on a mini was my very first kit I got.
It was rough.
Spoiler:

Are oils different than acrylics for nmm? I will need to give it a try.
Do you use terpenoid, Japan dryer, galkyd linseed or Liquin with oils for miniature painting?
And basic acrylic based for the primer yes?

Finished.
Used up few bits, rescue accomplished.

@Mothsniper

Thanks again, and if they hadn't already deep bathed in alcohol you'd see my own first attempts with oils... It was, something...

Now I can't see myself go back to acrylics though, even though I don't paint enough I LOVE playing with oils far too much.

Standard primer for me works perfectly, though if you don't do a zenithal primer, i'd go for white/light colour primer instead of black. I discovered Molotow street paint, they work great and with lots of colours choices.
I use standard white spirits and linseed oil for dilution, though I may not dilute all the time when there is an acrylics base coat, when you blend it smooths out like a glaze, so straight from the tube before spreading it on the mini it is.

For TMM i'm sometimes adding liquin to the metallics colors but it's because those semi-opaque pigments have a weird behaviour I still don't have a good grasp on, these metallics are weirds paints truly... Might invest into enamels metallics when I got money, so I don't have to deal with thoses anymore...

Never got good NMM out of acrylics, but in oil my process would be like anything else, apply the paint with one brush then wet blend it with another brush that stay clear of spirits for the session. Sorry if i'm not clear enough...

Nice work all. Still plenty of time, but keep an eye on the calendar.

I do enjoy the arctic camo I do on the phobos guys. Goes on pretty easy, and is a lot more forgiving then a lot of other schemes. Got about another dozen waiting in the wings from KT. Probably not get them done before the rules change, but they always have room to join the 40k army.

They were 3d printed Black Templars, that I removed the insignia, and swapped the heads, and some of the weapons from.
