Hello.

Years ago, I ran the Thanos Ultimate Encounter. I was Thanos and I played against a group of friends that played the other heroes. They defeated Thanos without too much trouble. I was told this scenario is very challenging. So, I guess....I suck at playing Thanos?

I had trouble keeping supression tokens off Thanos because when I'd roll to see how much dropped off of him, I'd roll badly and none would. Damaging amplifiers didn't do much because heroes were repairing them easily. They had Ghost Rider on their team. I feel like he alone tipped the scales with his "Wicked's Judgement".

We're thinking of playing the scenario again but I'd like to make it more challenging this time. Any tips?

Thanks.

There are the two tactics cards that exist solely to power up Thanos. I haven't played it in a while, but last I did I remember bumping up to the second difficulty tier made it a lot harder.

Thanks for the reply.

We played it on "Normal". Which is one step up from "Narrative". There are four difficulties. Narrative, Normal, Hard, and Insane. The only difference between Normal and Hard is that the hero teams get one less Team Tactic Card (2 instead of 3). With "Insane" difficulty level, that's when Thanos gets a new card called "My Divinity Is Absolute!". That card makes it so when he reduces a target's health on the healthy side, they don't get a Dazed token. They just flip over to the injured side. Letting him possibly focus down one hero and KO them. Did you mean put it the game on "Insane"? I think that's maybe what you meant.

Do you think its better to go for the win condition where Thanos KOs the heroes until they're down to four or less heroes? Or is it easier to just trash 3 amplification modules?

If you can take out a couple heroes it helps keep up with the action economy even if you then focus on the Amps. As I think on it you might just need to bump up the difficulty to keep up with how characters are generally a little more powerful than when the game was still in its first year. It has admittedly been a while since I last ran it.

The secret to playing Thanos in that encounter is that if the enemy can gang up on him he will just die. He really needs to find spots to go where he can bully individual characters, using the space gem/time gem to find a spot where you can hit someone squishier without taking a lot of punishment in return.

The other thing to note is that the game has tilted a bit towards lethality since that encounter was written, and while the devs update unit cards they don't update the UE cards, so you may just be playing a little from behind as UE bosses these days. I'd encourage running UEs at higher difficulty these days.
