Vote time!

This month the topic was: Space Marine. Our annual start of the competition. Do want want to travel to distant planets? See exotic creatures and planets? And kill them? Then sign up for the Space Marines today? Not just GW’s Space Marines, but any future soldier that fits the bill. Day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm, every meal's a banquet, every paycheck a fortune, every formation a parade. All right, sweethearts, you're a team and there's nothin' to worry about. We come here, and we gonna conquer, and we gonna kick some, is that understood? That's what we gonna do, sweethearts, we are going to go and get some. All right, people, on the ready line! Are ya lean? Are you mean? WHAT ARE YOU?

As always, you're free to hand out as many votes as you like, and for any entry you feel deserves recognition, based on anything from technical proficiency or model choice, a neat conversion or a cool take on the theme, or anything else! You're also very welcome to leave some feedback here for the entrants, and many of the images click through to the Dakka gallery if you'd like to give out a vote or two there as well. Images in the Dakka gallery are less compressed then the ones in the vote thread, so can get you a better look at details.

Daia T'Nara - Squad Kirsch, Genesis Chapter
Fine work highlighting and the freehand is always of value. Have you try to use markers for the shoulder details?
Cool set of marines to have.

inmygravenimage - Terror from Below!
Cool set of units. Love the detail in the bases.

Nevelon – Reivers
The camo looks simple but super effective. How long did that take per guy?
It looks like it was fun and forgiving, I must give camo a try.

Mon-keigh – Thunder Warriors
That is a mean unit. Love the dusty base, what did you use for that? And have you tried before to reverse the plasma, white wash over blue?

theCrowe - Lamenter
Love the smooth highlighting on the armor and the free hand is crispy! Checker pattern is not easy to do, I tried it once and decided not to do it again lolz. The resurrections is unreal, you must have before and after pick side by side, love it.

Snafu – Captain
Not gona lie, I like earlier color hue more, but those are some godly smooth transitions! With oils too, crazy good man, First place from me!

JoshInJapan - Nexus Marine cyborgs
Crispy fine work as usual with great contrast. It looks like you’ve developed a technique for achieving NMM with minimal effort—focusing only on what’s needed for the effect without overworking the piece. At least that is what it looks like to me, how much time on average does one guy take?

Pariah Press - Black Legionnaires
Solid work, they read well, especially on the cool terrain base. It is hard to see, but I think you did a great job on the eyes for the Mallex.

Geifer - Nautolan Padawan
Love the transition on the saber, interestingly I always put the lighter part at the hilt. Solid paint job and the details as usual.
Have you tried to convert one of those units into Sith?

Maharg - Eradicator
Super crispy work man! Perfect highlighting especially on the weapon, and the base just makes the whole unit look so good.

Vejut - Lyran Guard Battle Armor
Good call on the two tone armor pattern, such a good contrast with the base terrain. These turned out super successful.

Mr Nobody - Blood Angels
Solid paintjob and very nice crispy details. Love the purple nid spatter

Captain Brown - WW2 Allied sailors
A salty bunch. Are the lads for diorama?

tipios – Space Marine
The extra conversion was a good call, much more imposing profile with the tubes. Solid paint job and love the dusty base, what did you use for that dust effect?
Don't know why, but the armor calls for verdigris.

KidCthulhu - Lord Inquisitor Nikolai Kronos and Henchmen
Love the color scheme, the grimness and the darkness. Such a good job on the details and spatter effect. Very cool set to own.

Piousservant - Iron Warrior Falchions
Very cool looking tanks. Read well and the freehand striping is very clean!

Chris56 - Salamander Dreadnought
Such a good contrast and airbrush work control! Especially love the orange specs on the legs, has an effect of embers from the lava pool.

Jadenim – Sister of Battle
Simple but effective color scheme and solid paintjob!
I have some sisters, and think will do your color scheme for them.

Midget Gems - Knights Sanguine Assault Bikes
Solid work and highlighting! I absolutely love the contrast with the base.

Awesome work guys! glad to have time and be part of the event.
Paint for paint god, Bitz for the bitz throne!

Thanks. I just used some crushed-up clay-dirt from the garden. Terrible stuff to make a garden in, but great for basing.
And have you tried before to reverse the plasma, white wash over blue?

I haven't tried that, I'll give it a go.

Nothing fancy or expensive, that is awesome! Love to use dirt from outside for a great effect. Bases have cool dusty texture.
And the best part, you can color tint the dirt with some paint

Time for some winners!

Starting with a tie for 3rd, with 12 votes each,

Maharg’s Eradicator brings the Anti-tank heat...

that’s needed to deal with the scale of armored might from Piousservant's Iron Warrior Falchions

Taking the silver with 14 votes us Snafu’s gloriously shiny gravis Captain

And in a surge from the deep, inmygravenimage takes the gold and the 15 votes with Terror from Below!

Amazing work from all the winners, and everyone who entered. Looks like we finally purged the perfidious Eldar from the Space Marine competition, but stay vigilant, they may return. The year is off to a good start, let’s keep working together to fight the Pile of Shame and improve ourselves as painters.

It is super quick and easy. Takes less time per guy then edge highlights (which I only do one pass at) a few minutes a model per shade, and I do 3 color camo normally.

My scheme:

White armor:
Prime white (rustolim rattle can, like eveything I ddo)
Grey Seer base
Apothecary White contrast all over
Nuln oil the soft armor in the joints
For clean white amor, edge highlight with a pute white, like White Scar (I forget the name of the pot I’m on right now, they go clumpy fast) This lets the otherwise shades of grey armor read more like a pure white. Omit for camo
For camo, tiger stripe the hard armor. I use 3 colors. Dark grey (mechanicum), light grey (dawnstone), and a pale blue (elf grey). This is an organic proccess. You want the stripes to branch and overlap, and mostly cover the base armor, and mostly stay the same direction. But not entirely, and there should not be a pattern. While the bulk of the stripes can be done in one pass each there needs to be a touch up step where I got back and redo some colors. Not only does this help fill any blank spots I missed, but ensures that the last color is not always the stripe on top. They should weave over/under each other.
I generally don’t edge highlight the camo armor, but have been known to give the cloaks a little edge to help them pop a bit, and seperate the fabric from the armor worn underneath.

Congratulations, everyone! Another superlative month!

@Mothsniper: Thanks for the comment. The NMM was pretty easy on these guys, as they aren't actually cyborgs so I got to put in the details myself. Not counting basing and drying time, each model to about 30-40 minutes, broken up over several sessions.

Now showing classic Harlequins!

Painting total as of 24 April 2026: 45

Painting total as of 12/31/2025: 152 plus a Deva King statue

Vallejo Pigment mud, it looks good.
I use and glaze cheap diy stuff as much as I can, but that is quality stuff.

That is a reasonable time for any mini, and crazy fast for nmm imo.

I worked on the camo for the tanks this moth and was surprised how easy camo was to do and how good it looks for such minimal effort.
The only first and last time I tried camo was this guy, and it took forever.

Next project, I will go heavy camo and use your style. I though patterns would way harder and time consuming to do by painting individual camo pieces, and never though that I could just layer quick brush strokes.

Congratulations to the winner!
well earned guys!

Thank you. I can see why you would paint lightsabers that way. I think that gets you a little closer to the movie look. I'm doing it the opposite way because I don't want it to look like the blade is hottest at the hilt and gets cooler along its length. So the brightest part goes on the end.

And that's a no to the conversion part. I already have two Sith. I wouldn't know what to do with a third one.

Or for the real, much more boring reason, Shatterpoint is too new. I haven't had my fill of the stock models yet. Conversions come later when I want to expand beyond the core collection.

Ah, fair point, did not even think of that. I need to try inverting my sword approach. There is another reason I would go for the lighter blade at the hilt, saber or not, for the extra contrast, trying to put darker end right next to the lighter end. Kinda like how Wayne Reaynold's does it.
100% on the conversion, lego principle, I do like to follow the rules on the first go and then dive into modding. Do Nautolan even have Sith? they surely do right.

Cool set of marines to have.

Thanks. I never had (or really knew about) Space Crusade back in the day, when I started becoming aware of GW it was already on to Advanced Space Crusade, but they're firmly in the nostalgia collection regardless, I was very happy (and surprised) to find then, along with the other two colour squads and some extras (dreadnought!) at a second hand event. My wallet less so, but it was a bargain nonetheless.

I have looked at a few markers, but the ones available locally don't go as thin as a brush; I'm sure there are better ones but I tend not to shop online if I can help it, and even though the results can be wonky I'm not bothered by that - not going for Golden Demon, just happy that I've painted them.

Second hand events are always dangerous

The reason I asked is because the numerals on the shoulders could of been done with micron sharpie?... and I never tried markers so though to ask.
well, I did try markers as an experiment to color not for any details.

I can only assume that Nautolan Force wielders are as capable as anyone of rejecting dull Jedi doctrine. Can't say I've ever checked, but I don't think a Nautolan Sith is any problem.

Not my first choice, though. If I ever find the time, I'll probably do a Nautolan New Republic officer first. Might look fashionable in that shiny new uniform.
