Im in the market for a case to haul around my Custodes in.

Thankfully, the army isn't very big. For now, I will be using a train to get to the store I play in and will require a bit of walking, so the 180 kg magnetized display case transport isn't a viable option.

From a position of ignorance, I would have thought that almost any case (K? citadel?) would do the job. I also found Feldherr, of which I've heard much praise. The foam trays look suitable, but to my mind the case price is ludicrous. Combine maybe?

I use magnets, and that gives lots of options for cases. I have used a small suit case before with plastic tubs. But for my MCP I actually use buscuit tins without issue. You can put foam in as well if you think it will move a bit as you travel.

Also 180 kg would be huge carry case!

I like Battlefoam cases & foam trays.
Most of my forces are in their PACK 720 cases nowadays. They do have smaller cases than this. And a foam tray customization option.
BF isn't cheap though. Think of it as investing in decent luggage. Luggage that you'll use week after week after week.

I would also recommend planning for the future. Right now you may only have a small force. But if you add to it....
Best to get something slightly larger than the min you need today - unless you don't mind investing in another case eventually.

While I’m using more magnetic boxes these days, I’m still a fan of KR Multicase. I’ve not looked at they trays they have for custodes, but they should have some.

They also make expandable backpacks. Which I don’t have personally, but is on my to-buy list next time I place an order with them.

Downside is shipping.

Whoops! That's supposed to read 18 kg.

I have a 40lb. display case at home.

Does foam work for all the spindly bits like spears, and Custodes' hairstyles?

For foam you really only need to care about bit that stick over the edge of the base.

KR uses soft foam, so it something reasonably solid sticks out a bit, the foam will squish down and it would be fine. Extra fragile bits might need a deeper tray.

If you have a fixed list, you can always get pluck foam to make custom slots for what you need.

Honestly I just found it funny that based on weight, a carry case exists that’s multiple of me, significantly heavy. 18 kg still quite heavy.

A simple case with foam trays or a small magnetic case would do the job. A lot of people use things like KR Multicase or Feldherr — pretty lightweight and easy to carry on a train.
If your models are already magnetized, you could just use a small toolbox or storage box with a metal sheet in the bottom. Cheap, light, and works really well for walking around.
