Maybe they were so desperate to defeat a foe they turned to dark pacts to win? Maybe they have a member or two that was previously corrupted by Chaos? They seem pretty isolated during their missions, so maybe it could go underneath the Imperium’s noses for a brief time? Just thinking of possibilities.

Only an extremely small list of Imperial organisations boast of never having any member fallen to Chaos, such as the Grey Knights and the Custodian Guard.

The Deathwatch, to my knowledge, are not on that list. So, sure. It could happen. I don't know if it's happened onscreen, but it could.

It’s certainly possible. But presumably even rarer than it is for regular Astartes, simply because of the additional screening of more regular/direct Inquisitorial oversight.

So, if one member of a squad arrives with questionable practices which are Chaotic in nature (and the Marine wouldn’t necessarily know that), then it seems they’re more likely to be spotted than if they were just with their own Chapter, especially if it’s a widespread practice that’s been corrupted over the centuries.

Games Workshop once said something that greatly angered the community, but I will still repeat it here. Everything is Canon

In my personal book, if primarks can get corrupted, then I think anyone can get corrupted. Maybe the Deathwatch kill team got too obsessed with perfecting the perfect assassinations, and then they stumbled upon some artifacts of Slannish origin. It's your army, you can do what you want with it

Deathwatch are still just Space Marines. They just get conditioned into hating Xenos more than their original Chapter brethren.

Working with or for an Inquisitor also brings the risk of becoming exposed to less than puritanical objects or ideas.

With Deathwatch fighting Xenos all the time I can easily imagine some of them coming to the conclusion that in the greater scheme of things Chaos is not as much of a problem as the higher ups usually tell us. And what could possibly go wrong when I slaughter 7777 Orks for the Emprah with this smelly sword right here?

That is only half the quote.

They said "Everything is canon, not everything is true".

They are saying that the text is canon, but does not all represent fact. It can sometimes be propaganda or warped truth. Some text, such as the 30k black books, is overt in-universe material.

The Full full quote also refers to anything published with the Warhammer 40,000 logo being as official as anything else. There are a bunch of caveats to "Everything is canon" that everyone forgets because it doesn't suit their agendas or provoke the same hyperbolic narrative

Everything Is Canon is more correctly "Anything licensed or published by GW for a setting is as canon as any other thing licensed or published by GW, for a given value of canon that does not imply absolute fact and can contain contradictory interpretations, but does not include the random ravings of some guy on Reddit or what your mate Steve swears he read once in Rogue Trader that he has been mysteriously unable to find since"

But that doesn't get the blood boiling like "Eeverything is canon" does

Whoops, my bad. Sorry

But going back to this. It really should be whatever you want to do with your army. There'll always be people who will argue or say that your guys are wrong because they don't specifically align with something in a book or something written in the text, or we'll get grumpy that you're running Chaos guys as Ultramarines, but at the end of the day, they just represent statistics in a book and can look however you want. Also, custom head Cannon is always better than what companies do in my opinion, because you made it yourself and you get to be the Creator in that process, coming up with the ideas that light Sparks for your imagination and that of others.

Thanks everybody for your suggestions, I’m very grateful for this discussion! I didn’t know that Games Workshop said that, but it’s quite relaxing to have that in mind. I usually come up with armies based on a narrative perspective, so I’m glad to see that this particular idea is usable.

You have to let chaos in. So I don’t see why not but I imagine that the death watch are less a risk of that.

I expect that an astartes level of zealous commitment to the emperor is considered along side their martial skill to be brought into the death witch

France

Guess that could, hâte of the xenon could be used as a gateway and being in the deathwatch implies getting into contact with lots of Denis artefacts over a career. We know for a fact that all that lays in xenos' hands may not just be xenos'in origin... And thus another gateway.

Now, that, as a specialist marine operative, they are the S tier of the space marines, I could very well see them even more resistant to the lure of chaos than average but still not immune

My 2 cents

Absolutely. The Inquisition is all about accomplishing a myopic goal by any means necessary. If the end result is Xenos destruction, nothing is truly off the table.

Also, Black Shields exist, so its very possible that some members of a KT already have fallen to Chaos to a degree. There's a lot of inroads for that kind of storytelling with all the chapter options available.

If anything, after going through the Eisenhorn novels, I feel like an Inquisitor falling to Chaos is a common enough occurrence that there are very well-oiled (by Imperial standards) protocols in place for when that happens.

Deathwatch would not be safe by the association, not by any means.
