Hello, brand new Ork player looking to play my first game and looking for advise for my first 500 point match

Right now I have a set of
Set of Ork Boyz
Set of 5 Flash Gits
Kaptian Badrukk
Set of 5 Stormboyz
Boss Zagstruk
Trukk

Edit: I also have ammo runts but I think these are more tokens for my flash gitz than anything else

Looking for feedback or suggestions, I’m opening to changing things but I just want a fighting chance

Thanks!

I'd cut the Trukk for one, in a 500pt game it doesn't do anywhere near enough to be impactful.

That would leave you with 105 points. I'd toss in 2 units of 5 Lootas myself to take advantage of the Freeboota's rule. However, if you don't have the kits already, they are likely getting a refresh this edition, so it's probably not wise to go and buy some now.

Anything could fill the role for the moment, just grab something you're interested in. Once they new starter set comes out next month, you'll have plenty more options.

I don’t know why I didn’t think of Lootas but they seem perfect for my crew!

Would it make sense to buy one box of the old models and one box of the new models for variety?

I’m new to Warhammer in general.

I also read that an Ork Big Mek can lead the lootas, is it worth having 1 group of lootas plus the big Mek or just two groups of lootas?

Technically yes, a Big Mek can lead Lootas. However, the current rule for Big Meks is that they give the unit they join re-roll hits of 1... which Loota's have by default.

Speaking of the Lootas rules, they're extra good in Freebootas as you get full re-rolls to hit if you target someone on an objective, and you get Sustained Hits from the detachment rule against targets on an objective as well, so they can dish out some serious shooting.

As for what to get... it's hard to say. There's no way to know exactly when the Lootas will get a refresh but lots of people expect it to be in 11th edition sometime. Typically old models and new ones don't look very good side by side in the same squad.

If you plan on using a lot of Lootas in your army (and they seem very thematically on point for Freebootas) you could always get 10 now to tide you over and get more in the future when the new ones come out. The downside to this is that the current Loota kit does not come with the Rokkit Launcher that can be equipped, only the spanner. You can only get the far better Rokkit Launcher from the old Boyz kit (lots of the old Ork kits had pieces you could swap between them) It shouldn't be too hard to find a couple of these second hand, but that is more legwork to build the better version of the squad. For casual games though, it probably doesn't matter and it might change when the unit gets refreshed anyway.

For 500pt games, MSU (multiple small units) is the way to go in almost all cases. The biggest hurdle for smaller matches is having enough units to both fight the enemy and do the actions that will score you points, so the more units you have on the table, the better in a lot of cases.

Oh wow yea i virtually NO idea about the rules but I love the sounds of that Loota's so when I finish painting my Stormboyz that will be next! I have an Ork Boyz Kit from 2024 and I dont think I use the rokkit launcher, do i just need 1 or do i need 1 for each loota?

Thank so you much for this advise, I dont know what I plan to have in my 1000 point army, but i definitely interested in the freebooterz theme, thats what lead me to the Kaptian and Zagstruk (i dont know his lore but he had a hat with a skull on it and thats all i needed to hear) Is there other pirate themed orks I should consider aside from, Lootaz and Flash Gitz?

Edit: If i may ask more questions, when i build my list on various apps it always assumes im using 10 flash gits or 10 stormboyz, but I only have 5, i know 500 point is low but for a standard affair would you always run 10 of these units and attach my hero to them?

You need 1 rocket for each ork you want to equip that way.
Same for blastas & the default shoota.

You should read the rules for the unit.

You should learn the rules of the game & the rules for your army before you buy anything else.
Be aware that a new edition of the game arrives at the end of next month & then very soon after that a new version of the Ork codex.

The apps probably have the default set at 10. There should be some way to change the unit size if you only want to run 5.

As for always running 10 & attaching the character? Maybe, maybe not. There is no universal correct answer to this. It depends upon what you intend to do with the units.
If you have a close combat focused character you probably don't want to attach him to a unit that prefers to shoot. Likewise for the reverse. If you're going to attach a character, try & make sure that it's one that augments the unit.
And again, this is where knowing the rules comes in. You can better decide where to put things & how you want to play.

Lootas are very on theme for the Freeboota's so I figured even with the new edition coming out and even if their rules change, you can't really go wrong there.

Yeah, it's the old Boyz kit that has it, not the 2024 one.

Only the Spanner (kinda like a squad leader) can have the Rokkit-Launcha, so you'd only need 2 max. The Kustom Mega Blasta is a slightly stronger weapon and it comes in the kit, but it has a habbit of blowing up and killing your own guy sometimes. XD

Not specifically pirate themed per say, but Kommandos or Deffkoptas might be a good fit to the theme of sneaky or raiding respectively.

I don't use the app myself, I'm old school pen and paper, so I can't really help you there, sorry.
