What are people’s opinions of using a Marine chapter’s rules and characters but using a different color scheme and chapter name? For example at a RTT I walk up to the table and set down my display board; on it is a well painted marine army, but not an established chapter paint scheme. I explain that this is my army the _____ and I give a short fluff story or whatever. At the end I say that this army conforms to all the rules for the Raven Guard and even includes Shrike, but his name is _____. Is this acceptable? I’m not worried about casual play; I’m talking about RTTs and the like. How would you feel about this if the judge ruled it OK and legal? The follow up question is what about codex chapters? I.e. green Blood Angels or brown Ultramarines. Again conforms to all the rules and uses chapter characters, but is painted a different color.

Of course that's fine. It's a "successor" chapter or whatever they call it.

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias |

i would agree with chris. is just another chapter using the doctrines/rules/etc of the former head chapter thats it. so of course it works.maybe converting them a little from standart blister models so its not fully the same

No issue. Just don't bring blood angels and say they are Space Wolves.

Agreed. I was recently told mid-way through a game that the Ultramarine Blue marines I was facing were actually Blood Angels, and the tac marine squad chewing up my IG were Death guard proxies

I've got no problems with that. I mean, playing Lysander-Wing armies is fun, but who wants to paint all their Marines in day-glo yellow? BYE

This is a question about armies using the correct models, but not the correct colours, not about people using one model to represent something completely diferent (eg. Grot subbing as a Wraithlord, Guardsmen subbing as a Warhound Titan, etc.) BYE

as long as you dont like so many paople have said use completly different models its fine. i have had a Ba player use the SW rules for his red BA. if they were red marines without BA symbols that would have been fine.

Did you not even see an army list?? If the person did not show you and army list even i would have atleast asked what each squad was?? did you not see him roll for his death company?? Where you even concious during the game?? ps the last comment was just a joke, dont takew it personally

He was a kid who asked for a game. Up to that game I'd never seen him play his army as anything but Ultras. He claimed not to have understood me when I asked if everything was WYSIWYG. :|

Having played against an army containing Necrons subbing as Tacticals, Marines with Hello Kitty heads, and other such travesties (at a GT, no less), I can't really find fault with rules-to-appearance variance, as long as it's clear what rules are being used at the start.
|
As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.
But there's no sense crying over every mistake;

I have no problem with proxying, as long as it's consistent (ie all the Death Guard represent my assault marines, all the Tzeentch guys are tac marines). And as long as all assignments are made clear at the start of the game.
Yeah it's easier if everything is WYSIWIG, but really, it's a game. We're using little pieces of metal and plastic to represent people and monsters. I've played lots of other games using cardboard chits or even coins as markers, and had a hoot. It's not that much of a mental stretch to equate one symbol (a paticular type of miniature) with a bunch of information like a unit's stat line and weaponry.
I appreciate a well-painted, WYSIWIG army, but I'm not a snob about it. When I started 40k, I used the crappy marines I'd bought off ebay to proxy for everything: Nids, Guard, Tau, what have you. I ddin't have the $$ or time to buy and paint up every army just to try them out.
I do feel however, that anyone proxying must be explicit about what is what before the game starts!

Must agree, In fact I have a chapter of Space Marines that are a version of Imperial Eagles. I have painted them in OD green and have had comments like Eagles are blue and white or red and white or black and white. Well guess what they are my chapter of Imperial Eagles and I have even given the leaders names. The one thing I have done with this chapter is set it up to play it as a Divergent chapter or codex chapter and always tell the other person which it is before we play. One more thought, Why do all Space Marines have to be blue, or red or yellow or even black. Do something different and have fun with it. Warrior 50

As long as the person who is using something as a proxy explains very clearly everthing and does not leqave very vital info such as "oh yeah i forgot to tell you that the little guy your squad just charged into is actually my super tough demon prince" I have no problem.
