What is the best Inquistor and Retinue combo?  I have finally finished 3 different inquistors and very many retinue models and I have had some great luck with a new unit, the last combination I tried:

DH INQ Lord w/ Bolter, Tarot, 3x Warrior IG VETs w/ Plasma Rifles, 2 Mystics, 2 Sages.

I played a INQ Lord with a Psychic hood but it only ever helped in one game versus Eldar, and while it was great, I never used it in any of my other games, so I dropped it.  I also am considering putting a Psycannon on an INQ Lord in this squad, but for 30 points... I am unsure if it is worth it.  Of all the configs I have tried, I think this one is the best, I have a lot of luck with the move and fire 3x plasma rifles with rerolls, it helps for avoiding overheating, getting hits, and in rapid fire range is excellent!  I may even paint up a transport for this group, as unloading them out of a vehicle in the 12 inch rapid fire range would be heavenly (DH Warrior followers are BS4).

What other configurations are used out there, and why?

I like the Kyoto pattern DH Inq Lord: Psycannon, 2xHB servitors, 1x PC servitor, 3x Acolytes in carapace armour, 2x Mystics, 2x Sages. The reroll is mostly for the PC if it misses, but can also be used for a psycannon shot if the PC hits. I like the second mystic so that I can take a demolisher cannon shot at deepstriking termies, for example (I run this unit as an ally to my IG).

The Psycannon is just too good to pass up, I find.

Often I will pimp out the Lord with Thunderhammer and Holocaust - expensive, but since it's a shooty unit they tend to get charged by fast assault troops. This config also took down a Necron Lord in CC once.

i tryed out the solo lord with termie armor and psycannon in my last game and although he was not game changing (didnt expect him to be) but he was fun and annoying for my opponant. his IC status kept him from being targeted, the psycannon is a good weapon and he could deepstrike to pop vehicles if needed. I really liked the unit that way, and he was super cheap and allowed the assasin into my army.

Augustus, all you have to do is add a psycannon & null rod to the =][= and you've got the inquisitor I took to the Gladiator last year...oh I did give him a hood.

The Inquisitor Lord in my Radical DH army:

Bolt Pistol/CCW, Hood, Tarot
Warrior w/hellgun
2 Mystics.
Mounted in a Chimera

Nice and simple and cheap. He acts as a strategic commander with the hood/mystics/Tarot. He hides behind cover, sometimes having the warrior out to take pot shots (Warrior dying gives no vp's.)

Plus I love my Chimeras

No way!

I go with "The Inquisitorial insurance plan"
Inquisitor Lord bolt pistol, ccw, psychic hood, emperors tarot, 3 mystics. 100 points!

This guy gives my marine army 3 good things for minimal points; helps win die roll for going first, psycher defense, and drop pod/deep striking defense.

@Centurian 99,

Indeed? Well it seems perhaps that I have re invented the wheel! Thanks for th input, keep it coming lads!

I was curious about the add ons for the inquisitor (Hood, Null Rod, Force Weapon, A Psychic Power, Demon Hammwer, Psycannon...)  They all seem like great toys, but they are so expensive on a  model as wimpy as an inquistor S3 T3, I have tended to avoid them completely based soley on cost, furthermore, I dont see much need for extra protection as he is either: 1: alone, and IC status protects him, or, 2: with a retinue, and then his extra armor wont help at all with the mixed armor rules as no one else will be in Terminator armor in his unit anyway...

As for the HtH upgrades, I once had an expnsive inquistor with a force weapon go HtH with a necron lord, and he just couldnt wound him on a 6, and the necron lords warscythe cut him down (and his bodyguards too) with ease, given the disparity in stats between an inquistor lord and other CC HQs I have come to the conclusion that kitting up for CC on an INQ lord is similar to doing so with IG offficers, it can be done, but will never merrit the costs.

I think I like cheaper options like Darrian13s.

Thoughts?

For me, the role of the Inquisitor is filling in for the weak spots of my marine list. I have all the shooty I need and alot of h2h. This solution is cheap and effective. The funny thing is that I know of 3 other players in SoCal who have adopted my "Inquisitors insurance plan."

The only time giving inquisitors powerfists and thunder hammers was woth a damn was in 3rd edition.

Now a days since he's an IC he gets picked out and squashed before anyone in his retinue, or himself, can even swing.

In 3rd I had:
3 Crusaders, 2 Churigons, and the Inquisitor w/ book of table side choice and eviscerator.

In 4th I run:
3x Heavy Bolter Servitors, 2x Sages, Mystic, and the Inquisitor w/ tarot and psycannon.

That's what the Acolytes are for...they jump in front of anything that wounds him.

It was for a gladiator, so I gave him the psychic hood because I had the spare points, and so I could shut down psykers.  The null rod was used to make the squad automatically immune, mainly so they could hunt siren princes.  A psycannon + 3 plasma guns, with 2 sages providing a re-roll, was statistically able to take down a Siren prince with one volley, I think, better than 1/2 the time.
