Alright, sorry for the short notice but I need an answer today.  Have a game tomorow and wondering what I can take.

Chaos termies.
Can you give them a lightning claw and then upgrade them to sergeant or do you have to upgrade them first then buy it from the wargear section?

Basically, does the lightning claw cost the guy the +5 pts in the chosen entry or the +25 pts in the wargear entry?

The +5pts is only for Chosen, if a Chosen Aspiring Champion wants one he has to pay the full +25pts.

With the galaxy as large as it is the odds of the average guardsmen seeing and fighting a marine or MEQ are relatively slim. Unfortunately the guardsmen in your (and anyone else who plays IG's) army are the REALLY, REALLY LUCKY ones that fight marines ALL the time...

I would have to disagree. I would say that any "chosen" , whether aspiring champion or not, is elligible to take the upgrades.

yes

They hide their faces in snarling iron, but the cruelty, in their hearts is manifest in their brutal deeds. We are lost, and we are done. May the God-Emperor forgive our failure and protect our souls.

After another read, Im saying yes too. The Aspiring Champion in Terminator Armour can upgrade his power weapon at the points cost listed.

Banesword,

You were correct originally. Page 21 of the codex says that options for a unit cannot be given to characters in the unit, so the Aspiring Champion has to purchase his powerfist from the armoury.

yakface's 40K rule #1: Although the rules allow you to use modeling to your advantage, how badly do you need to win your toy soldier games?
yakface's 40K rule #2: Friends don't let friends start a MEQ army.
yakface's 40K rule #3: Codex does not ALWAYS trump the rulebook, so please don't say that!

The confusion comes from the Chosen entry stating that "Champions may not purchase the *ranged* weapons from the page opposite" (paraphrased), though that in itself does not invalidate the rules on page 21. I'd say no, you cannot upgrade close combat weapons for your Chosen champions except through the Armoury as normal.
