Came across this while reading up on Independent Characters

p. 50 " When an independent character joins a unit, it might have different special rules from those of the unit.  Unless specified in the rule itself (like the Stubborn special rule), the unit's special rules are not conferred upon the character, and the character's special rules are not conferred upon the unit."

I've seen a lot of lists that use the tactic of a Farseer running with Harlequins so he can cast Fortune. However, it does seem pretty clear that the Farseer does not benefit from the Harlequin's (Shadowseer) veil ability (forgot the name, but where you roll to spot the Harlies before shooting).

Am I missing something?. What if he's attached to the Harlies, but you can only see him? Should he just stay near the Harlies to cast Fortune? Looking for some clarification to some odd situations. Thanks.

The special rules for the Shadowseer power gives the ability to the squad.

It's not like the unit has stubborn on every guy or furious charge on every guy...it's like the unit has a special item that gives the entire unit the ability.

It's iron clad that anyone in the shadowseer's squad gets the veil.

How is it iron clad? The squad (Harlequins) have the special ability. The IC (Farseer) does not. When he joins it, according to the rulebook, he does not get their special ability. I can't find anywhere, like the Exarch's special abilities being specifically granted to the Autarch, that overrides the rulebooks ruling. It seems very specific.

I agree that the power gives the ability to the squad, however, the IC is not the squad. He is an IC that is attached to the squad.

because "veil of tears" is a psychic power.  it works exactly the same as any of the warlock powers, and i don't think anyone's ever argued that a farseer joined to a guardian squad with warlock under the effects of enhance or conceal isn't affected...

it shouldn't be thought of in the same way as the universal special rules, or similar things, it's a psyker power.

Exactly. It isn't a vet skill or a USR, it's a psychic power affecting the "squad". When you cast a power on a squad, it affects any ICs which are attached.

Interesting. I didn't read the part about it being a psychic power until after I posted. Seems to make sense with that part (which seems to be what I was missing).

Thanks for the input.
