A local player has a really sweet Thousand Sons army, and he does incredibly well with it most of the time. I play Tzeentch in fantasy, and now I'm starting to feel the draw in 40k. I was originally going to do Word Bearers for my next 40k army, but I've recently just painted two armies that are mostly red (my Warmachine Menoth army, and my IG army), and my Lizardmen will also have alot of red on them. So Thousand Sons are incredibly appealing right now.

The player around here uses mostly just rhino based squads with hidden powerfists, and a tooled up daemon prince. I don't want to copy his list, so I've tried to come up with something original. Let me know what you all think!

The Chosen of Ahriman each join one of the four units. (see below)

As a quick note, we have a house rule that allows ICs to attach to squads off table in drop pods/dreadclaws, and rolled for as one unit. I kind of want to only do a power armor army, and avoid terminators, and tanks/defilers.

I checked in the codex, and in the FAQ, and couldn't find anything about Thralls taking space in transports. The entry for the Chaos Hound specifically says they take space, but the Thrall Wizard entry does not, nor does the FAQ.  Army Builder also does not give any errors when taking, say, 8 sons, an aspiring champion, and 4 thralls (total of 13) in a dreadclaw, but does give an error when replacing the thralls with hounds. Is there a newer Chaos codex printing that addresses this?

With a total of 72 wounds, and 4 S8 weapons that can be fired multiple times if needed, I think I might have enough firepower and wounds to withstand the initial landing? If they end up assaulting me, I am fine with that.. I am Fearless, and they will likely never outnumber me, and they get beatdown by my HQ, and my hidden powerfists.

My biggest problem would be armored company, but that is true for any thousand sons list I think

So, any advice or thoughts?

An army with two wounds has alot going for it, afterall...

I can't tell, are you planning on using The Key at all? I got the impression it says it works only on rubric marines, and so could not be used to teleport squads with sorcerers in them. I always figured this was one of the reasons I see Chosen used so infrequently, the other being how infrequently I see 1k Sons used ...

I ask because with all those dreadclaws you've got a pretty impressive "deep strike" assault ability going for you already, and The Key would be pretty secondary even if it works on sorcerer-led Sons. I like the list you've got here quite a bit, and if it turns out that you can fit 12 - 15 models within a dreadclaw then I think you've got a solid tactic going there. The army is small and could suffer late in the game versus dispersed or fast opponents, but those 4 units are hard as nails and pretty damn nasty.

Hmm. I'm not sure... I thought that the issue with the rubric and The Key was resolved somewhere... otherwise, it seems fairly useless. I might just take sorcerer's instead of the chosen of ahriman if this is the case. It would end up being cheaper, as well.

Okay, I've come up with a new list. I realized that with Dreadclaws, I won't be using The Key that often, and that I could make a Sorcerer/Lord that would be just as good, for cheaper... so here is the new list:

Thoughts?

thanks in advance!

*edit* fixed troop squads... the champions should have bolt of change, not gift!

I think you were better off with the BoC on the dreadclaw sons squads, though I actually like to take warp focus + BoC on foot son squads. That extra +D6" can be what you need to reach deeper into deployment zones and crack open tasty targets ...

Otherwise like the changes on the HQ, even if no aura on either is a tad risky for my taste.

woops! The troop squads are actually supposed to have BoC, not Gift of Chaos... I mistakingly copied the wrong list. points are the same though, for BoC vs. GoC+Focus.
