It’s been a little while since my last army list post, and even longer for the Black Templars in particular. However, it’s been a productive few months, and I’ve been able to get some serious theoryhammering in. I’ve revamped my various points lists to improve effectiveness, something I have to emphasize since the Black Templars don’t have the innate ability of becoming invincible right out of the box. Each list is a take-all comers workup, and is designed for me to quickly throw together a small army if my opponent and I don’t feel like customizing our lists.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

I’d appreciate any comments, questions, or advice you have to offer, even if you’re simply reiterating the same stuff as before – it’s good to know when I’m staying on track.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

List Alpha – 993 Points

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Headquarters

Emperor’s Champion w/ “Accept Any Challenge…” – 140 pts

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Elites

Dreadnought w/ AC, DCCW, H Flamer, Venerable, Smoke Launcher – 138 pts

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Troops

Crusader Squad Alpha – 235 pts

Initiates (10) w/ PF, Meltagun, Bolt Pistol & CCW

Neophytes (5) w/ Bolt Pistol & CCW

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Crusader Squad Beta – 235 pts

Initiates (10) w/ PF, Meltagun, Bolt Pistol & CCW

Neophytes (5) w/ Bolt Pistol & CCW

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Fast Attack

Assault Squad (10) w/ PF, (2) Plasma Pistols, Bolt Pistol & CCW, Frags – 245 pts

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Alpha is more or less a core list that can also do a little work on its own. It does itself a favor by bringing 30 Marines to the field in a 1000-point game. It lacks severely in long-range firepower, but makes up somewhat with the Assault Squad, which will move in to tie up as much as possible while the Crusader squads move in with the Emperor’s Champion. The Dreadnought is primarily in the list to provide close-range firepower and to act as anti-tank in a pinch. Potential problems I see with this list is its lack of ranged anti-tank and heavy weaponry, where more mobile, longer ranged armies will slaughter my troops (Tau will be a problem – I play them regularly).

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

List Beta – 1500 pts

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Headquarters

Emperor’s Champion w/ “Accept Any Challenge…” – 140 pts

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Elites

Dreadnought w/ AC, DCCW, H Flamer, Venerable, Smoke Launcher – 138 pts

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Terminator Squad (5) w/ (2) Assault Cannons – 240 pts

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Troops

Crusader Squad Alpha – 235 pts

Initiates (10) w/ PF, Meltagun, Bolt Pistol & CCW

Neophytes (5) w/ Bolt Pistol & CCW

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Crusader Squad Beta – 235 pts

Initiates (10) w/ PF, Meltagun, Bolt Pistol & CCW

Neophytes (5) w/ Bolt Pistol & CCW

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Fast Attack

Assault Squad (10) w/ PF, (2) Plasma Pistols, Bolt Pistol & CCW, Frags – 245 pts

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Attack Bike Squadron (2) w/ (2) Multi-Meltas – 130 pts

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Heavy Support

Predator Annihilator w/ Heavy Bolter Sponsons – 130 pts

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Beta improves upon Alpha’s list by adding what was lacking. The Multi-Melta Attack Bikes, coupled with the Annihilator, make up the bulk of my ranged anti-tank, with the Annihilator sitting back and acting as a mild area-denial unit to discourage an attacker from moving into my deployment zone, while the turbo-boosting bikes will deal with short-range threats. The Terminator Squad will be the armored core around which my slogging units are based, giving me additional, incredibly tough units to use. I still feel that this list is too slow – it’s designed for urban combat and dense terrain, but is severely lacking against an IG gunline or Tau in more open terrain.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

List Delta – 2500 pts

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Headquarters

Marshal w/ Power Sword, Plasma Pistol, Adamantine Mantle, Meltabombs, Teleport Homer, Seals, Frags, Combat Shield – 161 pts

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Marshal’s Command Squad (Infiltrate x11) – 257 pts

Vet. Sgt. w/ Terminator Honors, Power Fist, Frags

Co. Champion w/ Power Axe, Combat Shield, Bolt Pistol

Initiates (8) w/ Meltagun, Bolt Pistol & CCW

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Reclusiarch w/ Crozius Arcanum, Bolt Pistol, Rosarius, Seals, Frags, Melta Bombs – 102 pts

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Reclusiam Command Squad (Infiltrate x11) – 271 pts

Vet. Sgt. w/ Terminator Honors, Lightning Claw Pair

Co. Champion w/ Power Sword, Combat Shield, Bolt Pistol

Initiates (8) w/ Meltagun, Bolt Pistol & CCW

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Emperor’s Champion w/ “Accept Any Challenge…” – 140 pts

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Elites

Dreadnought w/ AC, DCCW, H Flamer, Venerable, Smoke Launcher – 138 pts

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Crusader Squad Delta – 176 pts

Initiates (10) w/ Power Sword, Flamer, Bolt Pistol & CCW

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Fast Attack

Assault Squad (10) w/ PF, (2) Plasma Pistols, Bolt Pistol & CCW, Frags – 245 pts

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Heavy Support

Predator Annihilator w/ Heavy Bolter Sponsons – 130 pts

Delta is the whole shebang. It weighs in at 79 models (all of which are designed for CC), along with 2 Medium vehicles. It lacks in long range firepower, but has some tricks up its sleeve to remedy that. Two infiltrating Command Squads and their commanders will prove to be quite nasty, allowing 22 of my Crusaders (approx 25% of my force) get into H2H by turn 2 or 3. They’re followed up with the Terminator Squad (they’ll home in on the Marshal’s Teleport Homer), a Drop Pod Venerable Dread, and a 10-man Assault Squad to plug any holes in the initial offense while the remaining 30 Crusaders and 10 Neophytes create the final tide of my assault, led by my Emperor’s Champion. The Attack Bikes will provide frontline anti-tank firepower against anything that my troops don’t kill in H2H with their Melta Bombs or Power Fists, while the Annihilator again acts as area-denial, discouraging forays into my deployment zone while softening up the enemy line in preparation for my second and third waves.

I’m still working on a viable 2000 Point list. Any suggestions as to how I can change things around will be much appreciated.

I'd find the points to add a marshall to the 1500 pts list.

I've always found that in anything above 1000pts (usually 1500pts+) that a marshall is essential.

I've failed too may RZ test not to.

I know you've got the champ with one of the squads but if if the other ones fails a RZ then that may throw out your plans.

The dread also seems out of place in this config.

Either equip him long range or drop him in all lists.

I think he'll get wasted before he's useful.

Other than that pretty solid.

Agreed on the Marshal. I sort of threw the 1K and 1.5K lists together hodgepodge, but the Marshal is definitely necessary, if only for the LD boost to 10.

I never was sure what to do with the Dread. I like the idea of a CC unit, but as a AC/ML dread, I can see it doing me some good as an antitank, while retaining anti-infantry power.

Would you recommend keepin it Venerable? I'm not sure its worth it, but I could be wrong, seeing as how I haven't used it much (but want to use it more, thus its appearance in the list).

I'll rework the 1K and 1.5K tomorrow.

If your keeping the dread in then yes keep it venerable.

It can keep it alive for so much longer.

I once played a game where a ven dread held up an entire tyranid assault finally only going down when I chose him to.

Cheers

Delta is the only legal list. Remember that the EC doesn't count as your compulsory HQ choice, so you'll need a Marshal or a Chaplain. Make sure you give him a Holy Orb, it can pay for itself very quickly and is a much better deal than the meltabombs.

Ninja lawyer is right on the HQ front (Doh!).

Aww crap. I thought this might be the case. Now I'm going to have to dig up those old lists... More on that tonight.

On another note, here's a Combat Patrol list I was toying with. Not sure of its effectiveness, but looks like it would be fun to use.

Combat Patrol - 400 pts

Crusader Squad - 170 pts
10 Initiates w/ Power Sword, BP & CCW

Assault Squad - 230 pts
10 Initiates w/ 2 Plasma Pistols, Frags, BP & CCW

I'm trying to squeeze in as many models into this list as I can - Marines have an amazing basic statline, and I am trying to take advantage of it by overwhelming a relatively small opposing force with 20 models, all kitted out for CC. Any suggestions for it while I retool my 1000 and 1500 lists?
