Toowoomba, Australia

With Blood Angels seemingly forever and a day away and having not made a new 40k army in 3 years thanks to the glory that is WHFB I've decided to start a new force this year, a SM chapter using the BT sprues...

ATM I'm working on the prototype model and want some help deciding on where to proceed with colours.

Scab red trim/logo/weapon casings and black robes

OR

Black trim/logo/weapon casings and scab red robes

I bought some Vallejo shadow grey and SW grey last weekend as I thought it may look good on robes, but now I'm not so sure...

I thiiiinnnk... Red trim & black robes will work best.

"Bloodstorm! Ravenblade! Slayer of worlds! Felt the power throb in his weapon. He clutched it tightly in his hand and turned towards his foe letting it build in the twin energy spheres and then finally! RELEASE! Silver or Gold rims and very dark red chapter markings and robes. Then the chapter mark on the dark red robes with bone.

That was my first thought, was that he was precariously perched on that rock slab :|

As to colors, why the brownish ink action already?  Helps with red, etc?

- Boss Salvage

EDIT: Just realized that you aren't asking about armor color, which is apparently that nice bone that's already there.  Dumb me.

I thought of doing a DIY chapter with the same bone armor. I was going to do black cloaks and red fists. I think that would look cool.

Nice ink/blending job. Go for the red trim for sure. Black would make it pop too much. I actually dig the current light sceme you have going on. Though, Migsula's idea of going gold on the trim would work. Deffinetly not silver though. It would get washed out visually in the white. The red robes would work w/ white marking. Or go for the traditional snake bite. Actually that might work better to vary the colors without changing the color values too much. And actually, I would stay away from the black bolter casing if you go for the red trim, the bolter would pop too much and contrast with the armour. Looks dope! Keep it up. What are you gunna call these guys, adn what is their badge gunna look like?

I personally think that a red cloak would be better. More visually striking.

However you could just stay with the bone colour and be the Emperor for 'Gladiator' I believe the colours are close and I think it would look sutiably creepy

Well, Mandrake, just so ya know, for a moment I actually thought that that was a painted model. Shooty paint job mind you, but still real. So maybe yer photo shop kung fu isn't all that bad. Anyway, I think the black is still a lil too oppressive. still voting for red trim. Would somebody photo shop in some red so we can see what it would look like? And/or maybe some gold?

Because unlike other years, when I got 2 weeks holiday to sit down and paint 16 hours a day, I am now working and get 1 hour per night.

Prototype models always take heaps longer as I have to get schemes right and work out layering, washes etc.

If I go with this scheme I should be getting a model done every 2-3 hours if all goes well.

No pressure just hurry up cos people from around the world are waiting!

I likey likey your mini yes.

Ok, liking what you've done so far!

I agree with the others on the red and gold.

Do you know what colour the eyes are going to be?

The eyes make a marine.

NO PRESSURE.

Red, white and black are always a good combo.

I agree with the red cloth, black trim stuff. I find the Bolt weapons tend to look best with black. Also, red cloth offers more of an opportunity for depth, layering, shading, etc.

I also agree that you probably want a metallic in there, and you probably need a few more colors to finish off your scheme. Not primary theme colors, just the detail colors that will repeat for things like grenades, eyes, purity seals, etc.

What color for chest eagles?

I've progressed a bit further with the model.

Need to go back and fix up any areas not quie level/within lines, and then add battle damage, but on the whole the main paint work is done.

I also need to work out what to do for the (currently) blank shoulder guard.

I was thinking keeping the basic bone/black/red theme going and doing ordinaries and charges akin to the dark angel markings with the tinctures bone as the metal (stand in for white/silver) and red and black as the colours.

Wow! I love the colourscheme you've chosen. As far as heraldry goes why not a basic outline of a dragon? I think the Rackham symbol would look really cool there, although you'd have to simplify it to make it easy enough to paint.

Nads, I hate to be a stinker, but I'm not a fan of the black shoulder trim. It's just not working for me. I do, however, really like the warm brown tones the figure has and think a more muted beastial brown trim would look a lot better. Same with the robe, perhaps a more saddle red color? The weapons, however, look fine, and as I said, the rest of the color scheme looks great. Good to see you've found time to get back into things, even if it means we won't be seeing the Waaagh Gonads army of the month!

I'm also not quite "feeling" the colour scheme. It's nice, but something's not quite right with it. I've put together two more of my photoshops, to see if they might look any better. If that is of course, you feel that there is an issue with your own colour scheme. If you like it, that's fine.

Worked a bit more on fiddly bits.

The razor wire is GW stuff with several layers of watered down dark flesh/chaos black and watered down snake bite leather.

Backpack was (obviously) painted seperately and glued on.

Added 'writing' to the scrolls

Now only have to do:
1. Squad markings on the shoulder pad
2. Battle damage on the armour and weapons
3. The rim of the base (Black or grey?)
4. Maybe a cross over the left eye?
5. Varnish the model
6. Flock it...

Anyway here are the progress pics.

Its:

Spray white (GW spray)
Skull white
2 layers thinned graveyard earth wash (stains the model and runs into the details)
3:1 Bleached bone:Graveyard earth
Bleached bone
1:1 (approx Bleached bone: Skull White
Skull white

Throw in 2-3 extra layers for this model but you'll get a very good approximation with much less time using the above...

I actually like the black pad rims as they are currently, more than the red ones in the PS'd pic. The halved marine is kinda neat too, but there again I think the black rims don't work so well, mostly getting lost in the black side of the model.

So I like this tester model very much. A whole army of bone marines with red cloth would be very nice indeed. Very no-nonsense, but with the splash of blood red for crusading effect.
