So here is my first attempt at writing a battle report.  I hope this works out the way I hoped.  This is a 1500 point Seek and destroy (gamma scenario).
Oh and for any helping hints on the Tyranids list for my friend it would be greatly appreciated.  This was his first game with the 'nids and he seemed to do well but rolled really crappy.
In this BattRep, I was playing Raven Guard Space marines, geared to take down alot of infiltrators, but I didn't realize that things changed alot from the old 'Nids book to this new one.  I was dreading hidden setup lictors and infiltrating genestealers.
Matt, my friend was playing 'Nids. He was in for a "trial by fire" first game with his tyranids.  I would've included digital camera pictures but ALL of his models are unpainted and I know how up in arms some people can get.

Army Setup:

Marines Turn One:

-Snipers sink in 8 hits/7wounds on the carnifex, in which Carnifex 1 took a single wound.
-The Snipers and the 2nd ML Devastators Sink in 2 wounds on the 2nd Carni.
-Bolter Scouts 1 and the HB Devastators kill all but one termagaunt.
-The 3rd Sniper squad and the 2nd Bolter Scout squad put away 1 warrior
-The Librarian uses FOTA on the Warriors 1 Hormogaunts 1 and Genestelers wounding 1 warrior, 2 H'gaunts  (killed), and 1 genestealer (killed).

Tyranids Turn One:

-The single termagaunt from T-2 starts "lurking"
-Carnifex 2 fires at the 2nd squad of Snipers killing 2; The 3rd warriors squad wounds 1 sniper in the same squad but fails to kill.
-The 2nd Warriors brood kills a sniper in the 1st sniper unit.
-The 1st warriors brood also wounds a single sniper from unit 3, but again, fails to wound.
-The Hormogaunts and genestealers were just out of assault range.

Marines Turn Two:

-Sniper squad 1 kills 2 warriors in W-2
-S-2, B-1, and D-1 kill every last warrior in W-3
-H-1 is wiped off the table fromthe combined shooting of Frag missiles from D-2 and rapid firing from B-2.
-Epistolary attempts another shot with FuryOTA, but I rolled double 6 for the psychic test.

Tyranids Turn Two:

-H-2 rolled two 1's and a 2 for their move through cover, and 2 inches on their fleet.  H-2 was still partially in cover forcing them to roll difficult terrain again to assault, which failed.
-the last gaunt still in T-2 remains lurking in the open.
-the 2nd Carni fired off his 2 TL-devourers killing 3 snipers in S-2.
-the last remaining warrior in W-2 fired his barbed strangler into B-1 killing 2.
-the 1st Termagaunt brood fired into the 1st Scout sniper squad only killing 1 sniper, the gaunt's were also out of assault range.
-The Genestealers assaulted the 2nd Bolter scout unit. killing all but 1. The vet sgt. that remained managed to kill 2 genestealers before successfully fleeing.

Marines Turn Three:

-Sniper squad 1 and Bolter scout squad 1 rail the 1st termagaunt brood finishing them off.
-Sniper squad 2 and the Devastators rip into the last 2 warriors in W-2 clearing them from the table.
-The Vet.Sgt. falls in line from B-2 and fires off his bolter along with the Snipers from S-3 into brood H-2 clearing them from the table as well.
-All 4 Missile launchers and 2 of the bolters from D-2 hit home on the genestealers killing all but 2.
-The Epistolary uses his Storm of the emperors wrath on the last 2 genestealers finishing off the squad.

Tyranids Turn Three:

-The unit of gaunts (T-1) that was wiped from the table attempts to enter the table but fails their LD check for Movement.  They end up fleeing off the table immediately.
-The remaining gaunt from T-2 comes out from lurking but fails his LD check, so he falls back 8 inches.
-The gaunt brood T-3 also fails their LD check and runs 11 inches.
-The 2nd Carnifex pumps his shots into the Epistolary but all wounds (4) are saved. -The remaining warrior from W-2 fires into the S-2 snipers and kills another marine.

Marines Turn Four:

-The combined fire from the Missile launchers in D-2 and the snipers of S-3 leave the 2nd carnifex with only 2 wounds.
-The snipers and ML from S-1 kill off the last warrior at W-2.
-The Heavy Bolters from D-1 Kill all of the Gaunts in T-3 with a little help from the Epistolary firing his Fury of the ancients scoring 2 wounds.

Tyranids Turn Four:

-The wiped gaunts T-1 and T-3 attempt to make it back on the table but once again they fail.
-Carnifex 2 fires everything he has at  the Librarian and again fails to hit home.  The carnie tries to move into assault but is approximately 8 inches from his mark.

Marines Turn Five:

-The Epistolary uses his Storm of the Emp's Wrath on C-2. Needing a 6 to wound i was reluctant it would work but with it being AP2, I had to try.  IT WORKED! Now the Carnie only had 1 wound left.
-T-1 was picked off from the Hvy Bolter from B-1.
-C-1 was railed by the remaining squads and left with 2 wounds.
-The Epistolary assaulted C-2 and killed him, then rolled a 6 for his sweep which led him into C-1 removing the extra attacks from his assault in the next CC phase.

Tyranids Turn Five:

No Need for another picture here.  Matt, the tyranid played admitted defeat after I used the force weapon on his last carnifex killing it.  He didnt even attempt bringing on the last gaunt broods.

All in all it was a fun game, for me atleast.  I told my friend that alot of the game was determined by terrain placement.  If more area terrain was placed in the center, the game could have gone completely different.

Well, the terrain was pretty craptacularly set-up, but your friend lost the game way before that with his absolutely horrible army list. Tyranid Warriors? W/O number gaunts? Tooled up stealers and CC Carnifexes? No Hive Tyrants? It would take a miracle for someone to win with that army list.

And BTW, let your friend know that when the 'without number' broods failed their IB tests (on turn 3) they should have fallen back towards the remaining Tyranid warriors, not back off the table. Also, there is no evidence in the rules that a unit off the table has to take a IB test, so the turn a W/O number brood moves onto the table would be kind of a 'free' move (without having to take a IB test to move).

Yea he wasn't too sure about the rules and I kept telling him that he should move them their full distance and that he didn't need to test until the following turn. I figured that becuase of playing my world eaters against a friend with his grey knights. The whole recycling of your daemonic troops.

I will definitely let him know ASAP about where his gaunts should be falling back to. It makes more sense than to run back to the board edge.

As for his army list, he said he doesn't want to use Tyrants, He just wants to use like 5 carnies and a ton of gaunts. I told him its his choice but it doesn't seem like it will work out. Tyrants and their guard are vicious from what I remember. He also thinks that he might use a Genestealer brood lord.

And that bit about terrain, we take turns placing terrain, so when it came to my turn i just set my pieces close to the edges of the board. We have really huge pieces of area terrain he could've used, but for some reason or another he decided against it. I just shot him up real bad before he could get too close.

Was your list tailored against facing tyranids? Seems to be with that many Heavy Bolters and Missle Launchers.

Other than that agree with Yakface...it was a slaughter.

I usually take a large amount of heavy bolters because i tend to play against ALOT of eldar, dark eldar and other low armored troops. So i figured that the 'Nids were mostly the same.

I took the ML's and Sniper rifles so i could try and take out the higher toughness creatures like Carnifexs and Hive Tyrants. I didn't realize how effective my list was going to be. I usually take atleast 2 or 3 fast attack choice but i really wanted those sniper squads.

Put some terrain in the middle of the table. This isn't Warhammer.

how did you set up terrain anyway? UgoIgo or did you try to make a realistic and even terrain? I tend to the latter just because noone tries to bank good terrain on "his" board side (which are determined later on).

You took a tailored anti-Nid list against a terrible 'Nid list on a table with virtually no terrain. Why not just shake hands, call it a good game, and be done with it. Would've saved you a couple of hours.

i took a well balanced anti infantry list that i use on a regular basis.  My friends and I have pretty much set lists that we consistently use.  This one was my anti-troop army.  I usually field this type of list versus my buddies eldar (2 wraithlords and rangers/pathfinders).

I do agree with your statement that the Nid list was very "crap-tacular", but it was his first game with his new army.

Oh and matt the tyranid player won his first game with his 'nids yesterday.  He took some of the suggestions about his list and ran with it.  But he's still on his NO TYRANTS kick.  He fields 4 or 5 carnifexs though.

Each player gets d3+2 pieces of terrain on a 4 by 4 table. We then go in turns setting up the table before sides are determined.

Tyrant with wings would of really helped out in this case. He needs a Tyrant thou but it was a friendly game and thus no worries. Grats on the win and grats on his first loss. Then again it gives him something to build on for his army.

DA got lost, show you a DA panzy Eldar player. Three falcon with wraitlord and eldrad and ava will all be walking six feet under.
