A friend of mine who is a 40k and FoW player and in the financial branch of a major banking firm told me this....

" There are talks (going on) with GW management to sell off all remaining assets by 2009. (GW) management has plans to begin reducing production runs after the first the the year."

by the way, my friend is in his 50's and has a 10000 point eldar army, all in purple and green (yuck)...see pal didnt use your name.....

Why would your 50 year old friend be engaging in insider trading? That's a big hurdle to jump before I start believing this.

Why does anyone engage in insider trading?  To make a killing.

The better question is, "Why is your friend talking about engaging in insider trading?"

....Words can't describe how incredibly doubtful I am of this rumour.

1) "Sell off all remaining assets" - GW hasn't started selling off any assets aside from a fair inconsequential amount of retail space.

2) GW still has sculptors making new plastic kits for Orks, High Elves and others. These kits awhile to pay-off the cost of making the molds. If GW was selling off assets, they wouldn't likely be making that sort of long term investment.

3) There's been no contemplation of this in any management releases. Surprising their shareholders with the news would be a bad thing for the company.

4) Reducing production runs after the first of 2008? You mean right when they're releasing Orks? Uh huh.


Today you learn that 50 year-old bankers are about as reliable as any other 40K fan when it comes to rumours. Maybe he just meant that they were moving their assets to a bank with better confidentiality.

Why does the fact that the guy is 50 and have 10,000 pts of eldar matter?

Seriously, why deal in insider trading and go to jail? Why blab to friends about a large business deal so they can blab on dakka and kill the deal?

 

I only believe rumors from people in their 40's, must be currently employed by a respected fast food retailer with fryer experience and at least 15,000 in Eldar.  Their armies must be painted orange and pink.

Then...and only then I sell off my stock.

If this was true (but, I'm taking it with a mountian sized chunk of salt) I think Wizard of the West Coast would buy it.  Can anyone else think of any other company that would buy it?

I can think of many companies that would buy GW, but not many that are actually capable of buying GW.

To be honest, nothing about GW suprises me anymore. I wouldnt be suprised if GW gave birth to Paris Hitlon's love children, nor would I be suprised if Micheal Jackson seduced GW with Thunderbird or Night train.

Quite possible, given GW's current desperate financial straights (no dividend, plummeting turnover, 10% redundancies, 35 store closures etc.), but no more reliable because of that.

What does "selling off the assets" mean for instance? ANyone really within the banking world wouldn't talk like that as it is meaningless in the context of the sale of a PLC. GW directors may sell off their shares, as may investors. GW may sell off bits of its business (for instance its investment in Sabretooth, which itself is struggling), but we are unlikely to be talking about them selling of assets like their machining technology or whatever. If (and its a big "if") this rumour is based on truth, then it is probably about some internal restructuring, or just maybe a buyout by a larger company - although the latter is highly unlikely to be publicised even by leak so far in advance as normally they are tied up in a period of weeks or months at most.

  Well, I get my hot stock tips from my seven year old, who mostly games with a single, gold-painted half-orc.  He says that Games Workshop is going to buy out Hasbro and fire 75% of the work-force, and force the remaining 25% to copy-edit the next edition of Warhammer 40K.

No, what I told you was that I was going to buy GW for .50 and a pack of smokes.

I tend to agree with Hellfury and Osbad on this one.

There is a certain Private Stock Fund that holds quite a large stake in GW. I've been watching to see what they do as GW is amoung one of their only losing positions. If they decide to cut losses and dump GW the stock will tank. Thats when GW will be ripe for takeover via a cash deal as major inside players will be looking to cash in before the shares are worthless. Right now it would be a bit of a stretch for a company like Wizards as the current state of the dollar puts them in a weak currency position compared to either the Euro or the Pound.

M&A/Banking would not be saying 2009. Thats way outside the timeline of a normal Company sale/buyout. A timeline of 2007 sometime would be the timeline where M&A firms (probably sell side) would be looking at, else they wouldn't be involved.

EDIT: Stuff like this is also highly confidential. That whole going to jail thing is such a bummer.

Public companies are always for sale. 

Your 2009 timeline rumor has no substance unless this pal of yours is on the GW BoD or plans on buying controlling shares.

 

Well thats not exactly correct. There are lots of parties that would have insider information. Its just not within the correct window.

Well, if GW does go for sale, at least we can complain that it's overpriced.

2009? Maybe GW will have no choice but to close up shop once it gets news of slave's lawsuit.

I hear the dividends are coming back. Shareholders will be receiving timeless classics from the GW range in lieu of cash.

They might sell of a certain % of their business in countries like the USA which has other major wargamming companies, I dont see this happening in the UK as they are not closing or have closed any stores. In fact they have opened a few new ones.

I think that it's blatantly obvious that this douchebag "roneldar" has a history of hating GW, which anyone can see simply by looking at his past posts. It's obvious he made this sh** up, probably was just fed up enough one day and really wanted to do something he thought would hurt GW, that is, spreading this slowed rumor. For the record, I thoroughly hate people like you, roneldar. You can't always lie to get what you want.
