Hi,

I'm just new to this forum and have recently started collecting Death Korps as my first IG army. I just wondered if there was anyone else that plays them as they are set out in IA 5 and just how successful you have been?

The main focus of the heavy support is on barrage weapons. I've seen alot of people slag these and wondered if they were as bad as people have made out?

Cheers, Craig

I think it would be better just to play standard guard.

The DKoK I have faced have done really well.  I think they are a good army and fluffy and fun to face.  I have split my games with them, but really it is all about the missions.

I hear maxing out on Heavy Mortars (12) with Infernus shells is insane against any army that is not Fearless.

Yeah, Infernus shells are pure unadulterated cheese. Having 12 of them is like a cheese factory.

It's awesome!

Of course, if your opponent is fearless the strategy kinda falls apart, but for those armies that aren't - bombs away! You can even heard Necron armies off the table...

To build on this, a "DKOK" army using the IA5 rules is able to field 4 heavy mortars/ thudd guns per battery as opposed to a standard IG army's 3 per battery. Other than that, DKOK is restricted to the 5 printed doctrines (Sub-optimal), restricted HS options and restricted heavy weapon selections.

While a standard IG list has 3 less thudds/ mortars, they can make up for it in doctrine choices and other options.

That being said, I LOVE the DKOK range of models and plan to include several DKOK units in my army as attachments.

Oh sorry for posting in a thread I know nothing about.  I thought the discussion was referring to 3ed chapter approved DKoK that I read about somewhere.  I remembered they were lacking in some aspects and so forgot about them.

Any ways, what are infernus shells?  If H.B.M.C. thinks there cheesy, they must be good.

Thanks for the input everyone. I didn't realise how effective the infernus shells could be, but now i've read the rules fully I have to take a couple of them for the heavy mortars.

Cheers

Infernus Shells are, in a word, broken. They're just one of those crazy 'how did this ever go to print' style rules, like Siren in the soon-to-be-dead Chaos Codex.

Basically you attach them to whatever artillery vehicle you like (even Basilisks... not that I've tried that... yet) for +10 points or so, and then you fire as normal. The enemy unit suffers all the same damage, so, for example, if my lovley pair of Griffon Mortars shoot one, it's S6 AP4, but if one of my quartet of Basilisks fires one, it's S9 AP3. The power comes from the additional effect. Any enemy unit hit must make a fallback move. That's not units that suffer casualties - that's units that get hit. So, if the blast marker touches them, off they go running to the hill.

You can probably imagine what a couple of these things can do to a non-Fearless gunline. Now imagine what 12 of them in a DKoK army can do.

As I said, you can herd Necron armies off the table - force a phase out without actually killing any.

Crazy stupid rules. I love 'em.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Infernus sounds like an attempt to make Mortar squads not suck. It would have worked too, if the rounds were specifically mortar only and gave a fair leadership test (with penalties if needed) to avoid the effects.

Infernus rules would work as part of a general ork fix (amongst other things) by using them as the rule for pulsa rockets. Orks pushing necrons off the table would give them a much needed chance, and it would be an orky solution to problematic opponents.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Wow.  Then again its about time guard got some cheese.  Not that 70 pt lascannon plasma gun squads weren't cost effective, but this is a new level of IG cheapness.

My only questions would be, can the standard mortar use those cheese shells?

Nope, just Griffons and Heavy Mortars AFAIK.
