I was Googling the word devilfish (in regards to octopus) and this is what came up (yes, that's the first hit).

Ridiculous.

I'm not sure what I should find more humorous, the fact that the 40K devilfish came up first or the fact that someone thinks 40K is "non fictional".

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

I'm surprised the wiki entry came up first. ie as opposed to a GW site.

I think Google likes Wikipedia.

It's disturbing, but if something has a Wikipedia entry and you google it, you will get the Wiki entry first, before anything else.

I've also read that Wikipedia has overtaken google as the most trafficked site on the internet. I find this hard to believe, and depressing. But I continue to use it as a wonderful spell checker (at least twice in this post alone...)

You'll probably only get the wiki entry, because so many sites on the web have links to wiki.

Huh, I just tried it and I got two other sites before Wikipedia.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I got thias from Google with a standard no parameters search on the word 'devilfish':

_-_-- devilfish --_-_

www.devilfishonline.co.uk/ - 2k - Cached - Similar pages

Then I got two links to activities of the famous poker player who uses the moniker.

Then I got the Tau Wiki reference.

Then more poker links

finally at the bottom of the page:

hmm i wounder what dakka dakka is lol * looks it up*

159,336 ( at least that what my comp says) most visitid site on the web - not half bad for a unoffical fourm imho!

and yes i am a computer nerd i must be to know about this!

GW is 362'000 most trafficed sight. It's sorta sad that the official site gets less traffic than an unofficial forum dedicated(mostly) to it's products. Though it's totally understandable. I'm on Dakka much more than GW.

Sort of makes sense though. I would expect a forum site about a topic to be looked at more often just due to the nature of forum sites. How often do you go back to GW to reread an article? now compare that to how often you come back here to view a thread. From that stand point it sort of makes sense since you probably look at threads way more (like x10+ ) than GW stuff.

Alexa isn't considered a particularly worthwhile service, however: It gathers data from those willing to use it's toolbar (or other browser add-on) so it has a limited reach. You won't see Safari users, for example, as there's no Alexa plugin for that browser.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

Well how many Safari-users are there realistically? Not many. Even most apple users use firefox. It is much superior to Safari.

I use Safari and Firefox. At work I use mostly Firefox and a bit of WinEx for the sites which are not properly compatible.

There are probably about 1-3% Safari users and I think about 5% Firefox users.

A lot of users stopped visiting the GW site when they canned the forums.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I use Safari and Firefox both, but I probably use Safari more. I really like the way it tracks my RSS feeds. Can Firefox do that?

Regarding the devilfish, I got the same result as Iorek. I think the 40K devilfish comes up first because of the absence of a space. There are a few sea creatures that go by that name, but they are "devil fish," with a space.

If Firefox can't do it, I'm sure there's an add-on that will.

I would far rather read about anything Gw related here than on the Gw site. Sure Dakka is acidic, but its a good counterpoint to GW 'Ministry of Truth'. Besides Warseer hears it first, Dakka links-to very promptly and White Dwarf is months behind.
I only visit GW websites to review a price (and then only to see what sort of discount I asm getting elsewhere), or someone here links me to something is worth looking at.

I'm a computer engineer and I do knwo quite a bit about search engines. Google is what it is today because of it's unique search algorythm. A page is ranked depending on how relevant a word is in its content. What do I mean? Well, this article in the wikipedia has more time "devilfish" in it than any othere internet page.

If you really want to search for "actual" information on the internet use the directories. They are human indexed and people pays to be on them.

That's because they never have anything of use on the home site, just drivel.

Not sure why the OP is so shocked , if you had searched for devil fish rather than devilfish you would have found what you were looking for,as it happens google gave you exactly what you asked for devilfish , a Tau apc ,rather than devil fish a ray type fish .

Devilfish, one word, is a common spelling for an octopus. I've actually seen it as one word more often than as two words.
