MISSION: Hostage: Defender has one model from opposing armies troops selections. Retain control for big victory points at the end of the game. Killing the hostage results in -250 victory points for the killer. Attacker is the army with more fast attack choices.
Terrain tried to screw me, the hostage HAD to start in the center of my deployment zone where there were NO terrain features to hide or lay in cover...a dead zone of flat terrain. To make matters worse, my opponent wanted to play with the road features that were on the board, roads leading right up to the hostage. His rhinos were going to be moving 18" a turn. I sort of disagreed but didnt want to push the issue as I wasnt planning on taking him anyway...today was just for fun.
He deploys everything out of sight but ready to move out, his defilers a ways back in terrain ready to move out and shoot and the rest of his army behind area terrain, during my deployment I had an Idea, I took my combat squads that contained the veteran sgts and encircled the hostage in base to base out in the open...a sweet defiler shot, sure, but a sweet way for him to kill off the hostage as well. one pred was also VERY close and Sammael as well. The rest of my army parked close to some area terrain with my LR blocking line of sight to the other pred, my command squad with Lord, and my dread. My mini tac combat squads (5 man plasma/lascannon) sat in some 4+ area terrain. I won the roll to go first but as I could only see a single Oblit, I turned first turn over to my opponent.
TURN 1
He begins to move out, rhino's surged forward with smoke launched, the oblits failed to move far enough thru his area terrain to shoot and his daemon prince and raptors simply moved, not jumped though the terrain to get a bit closer for a second turn pounce. His defilers move out to shoot. Indeed, my combat squads with the hostage were safe, the defilers instead fired first at a combat squad in terrain killing only two with the blast. His second shot fired at the landraider, missed, and landed smack on top of the combat squad right behind it. They would have all died miserably if it wasnt for Azraels 4+ Lion helm, I lost my apoth and the vet with nothing on him, leaving the standard bearer and two power weapons.
I hardly move at all, Azrael and company board the LR and it moves into probably the stupidest position I could have, I didnt realise it as I had my eye fixed on blasting one of the defilers and getting azrael into combat. I was originally planning on popping smoke but my exitement got the better of me and I shot instead. Luckily, the LR did indeed take one of the pie plates away. All three of my tactical lascannons fired at the other defiler blowing it up. My predators opened up on the rhinos, immobilising one and samael moves to shoot some more at the rhinoes but does nothing. Other than that not much happens. One of the tactical squads move off of the hostage and provide a sort of buffer zone between his forces and the hostage with the landraider and sammael completing the "fence".
TURN 2
With his defilers neutralised (the other one was on the opposite corner and would play no part in the remainder of the battle) He moves in with almost his whole army for a killing stroke. One rhino hauls butt around some area terrain in an attempt at flanking my forces guarding the hostage. His daemon prince moves to attack the bulk of my forces, the raptors and oblits move into PERFECT firing positions to melta the vulnerable land raider. The troops from the immobilised rhino move out to attack the forward 5 man squad. He tries to tank shock them first to get close to the hostage with his third rhino, but the vet sarge and another trooper use their patented Dark Angel Krak grenades to death or glory, KILLING the rhino and entangling the troops inside! AWESOME! But now I'm screwed, the raptors and Oblits target the land raider with two multimeltas and two meltaguns all within half range. However, they all saw Azraels livery on the side of the LR and got scared, all four meltas miss! Glorious, in my opponents dispair he totally forgets to use his lash and proceeds to the assault phase. Daemonprince charges Sammael doing nothing against his mighty 14 armour, and the EC squad charges my forward 5 man tac killing only 2, they kill 2 in return and hold.
I plan on effectively ending the game right here. Everything pretty much stands still since his army is all within the sights of my guns. The landraider moves back to a safe position after dropping off Azrael and company, Sammael soars over the area terrain that his second rhino is trying to speed around. Azrael and company move to charge the HtH right in front of the Daemonprince. During shooting, Sammael gets a penetrating hit against the rhino, shaking it only, but since the troops have to get out on a penetrating hit, I just bought the hostage another turn, they could reboard but they would be inside the rhino and unable to get control of him. The two tac squads still encircling the hostage rapid fire 18 bolter shots into the Daemon prince managing to kill him off. The rest of my shooting kills off 3 of the raptors in cover thanx to their cover save. Azrael charges the EC squad combatting my tacticals. The EC succeed in only killing 1 tactical and 1 of the command squad. Azrael kills them all (4) before my marines can even strike. Azrael and company take an extreme 5" sweep into the raptors. The two marines from the tacticals sweep into the entangled EC squad from the third rhino.
TURN 3
My opponent moves his defiler. (who cares, its got an autocannon and can only see sammael), he tries to move his rhino thru the terrain for some reason and immobilises himself. He also summons daemons and charges the marines guarding the hostage. Terminators STILL havent shown up. (???) His EC that came out of it move for a rear shot on Sammael in his 10 armour, 4 bolter shots and they shake him. HtH sees Azrael's command squad lose the power weapon of the squad leaving only the standard bearer. He kills the rest of the raptors however and moves to help out the 2 man tacticals after they lose a man and kill none of the EC. Daemons kill 3 tacticals and lose 1, all of the tacticals refuse to break using Azraels leadership.
With pretty much no targets to shoot, my tacticals with the ranged firepower move toward the battle proper. Azrael charges the initially entangled EC fighting the single vet with a power weapon. My dread moves to clobber the daemons, and my last tactical squad moves to delay the last EC unit so that Azrael has time to get to them. The hostage is all alone now, but his army is totally engaged in my favor. Sammael flies off to recoup and my LR moves onto the road and pops smoke to haul ass 18" into his deployment zone for an extra victory point in case I need another option besides Sammael. HtH the dread and tacticals kill off the Daemons, the vet with powerweapon dies to the EC but Azrael extracts revenge by killing all 6 EC with 7 wounds inflicted (this is why the powerweapon dies before the standard bearer) and my tacticals succeed in holding up the last squad of EC.
TURN 4 with 12 minutes left
Terminators Finally show up, teleporting in and stunning Sammael from the rear. I didnt notice that he still had an Icon close by, he teleported into a tiny spot getting him a combibolter and a reaper shot again into sammaels butt. His oblits move to shoot the LR with lascannons and get lucky, killing it. Between this stun and dead land raider, I wind up losing TWO victory points for the end of the game. 1 for not getting into his deployment zone with a squad and mobile vehicle, and 2 for losing my most expensive unit, the LR. (this is something I'm going to change in the future, I dont like my LR being my most expensive as it normally isnt that hard to kill a single Raider. This took him almost 10 minutes.
I still have the game wrapped up though, his army is decimated and he only has 400 pts left, for some reason he still wants to tally victory points. After I point out that between Azrael, Sammael, and the hostage still in my deployment zone under my control I have 770 he says "Good Game" time is called.

This game was against a younger kid that I've played before. About 15 YO. He's sticking with this list cause that's what he likes and he's getting better with it. He likes to sit still and shoot though and needs to learn how to respond better. Even without a good selection of targets he'll sit and wait for something to pop out so he can shoot it. I wasnt really worried about playing him, but there was a question about whether I could outshoot him or not.
With a very large peice of terrain in the middle and lots of area terrain around the board, I deployed my vehicles for a 6" move to start attacking his centre, the land raider was going to tote Azrael in for a frontal assault unassisted against the assault marines/chaplain, a tactical squad, and his veterans, I was confident that he would prevail. On my center I deployed in the open with my 3 lascannon tacticals and the dread for a line of sight shot to one of his preds and area terrain blocking all others. My Veteran sgt tacticals deployed behind the huge area terrain in the center of the board. He used to groups of area terrain to deploy, the one in his center (azraels target) and the firebase for 3 tactical squads and the dev squad. His predators were deployed to my left of each. My table quarter was the one on my right.
Turn 1
I win first turn. vet tacticals move up further into or around the big area terrain in the middle of the board. Las cannon tacticals stand still to fire with the dread in support...4 lascannons ought to kill 1 dread. LR plowed forward and popped smoke even though cover was hiding much of him from some of the shooting, he could've gotten frisky with some lascannons however. My preds move out from behind terrain for sweet long range love on his marines in the middle along with mighty sammael. 4 lascannons was definatly enough to take out a single pred. The shooting from my preds and sammael is enough to take out 5 marines and two assault marines. No Assaults, his turn.
His shooting is pretty lackluster and he retreats his assault marines a bit backwards to protect them from shooting and charges after rethinking. (he almost tried to jump the LR with melta bombs but didnt want to lose his chappy after all. My results, a stunned pred and a shaken LR.
Turn 2
My lascannon tacticals move to the safe side of area terrain in the middle for a next turn move into firing position, the rest of the tacticals hug the same terrain (like I said it was big) in order to get closer to his center troops in case Azrael needed help next turn. LR speeds forward and drops off the master and command in charging position for the tactical squad of 5. Predator moves right behind the land raider for next turns shooting, the board is crowded with area terrain, so my lines of shooting are very poor. Sammael takes a shot but it bounces off of armour and / or cover. Azrael charges annihilating the remnents of the wounded tactical squad with only the fist left in the center with two losses...he waits for the Vets/chaplain and assault marines to ignore their jump ability and charge into cover.
His turn, he feels that the vets dont need any help. (somhow he winds up being right) and the assault marines jump the terrain to bomb the LR. (this surprised me, and I wasnt sure if I was worried or not, that hulk in the middle of the board would be a problem for my preds shooting. Everything else stands still. Azrael and company kill all but a single vet with claws, the vets winds up aceing the command squad simultaniously. The fist hits Azrael twice wounding twice. One of my saves was a 3+...he dies. It was a judgement call not to kill the fist first and instead opt for killing off all the vets. Not sure If I was right or not, but whatever. I'm still not used to close combat marines in this context. Meltas on the landraider only score two glances out of 8 bombs. Shaken, not stunned.
TURN 3
My 15 lascannon tacticals move into range to fight a long range firefight against some 24 or so marines some of which are in a dev squad. (for lack of anything else...tanks are coming up in support and if I can just kill off the devs, my vehicles will own the board. The LR moves to a safe spot clearing line of sight to his Assault marines, and the preds/Sammael also move to burn them down. 2 Vet tacticals are in range to charge/rapid fire. After shooting, the assault marines are down to 3 men and the Chappy. They are charged by the first tactical marine squad. I manage to put a wound on the chaplain unsaved with my power weapon and kill two marines. they kill 2 in return. They fearlessly hold
His predator moves through his center cover to shoot at my dread with an autocannon bouncing off. He shoots at my marines in cover killing 2 but my plasma's and LC's are in prime shooting position now. CC sees his chappy and assault marines kill all but the last marine. I kill another assault marine and put another wound on the chaplain. His final vet moved to further into cover but it looked as if he was edging toward my LR...maybe he had a melta bomb.
TURN 4
3 lascannon tacticals get lucky and kill off four of the Devestators. LR blows his predator up and my preds moved to take long range shots down a corridor toward his last firebase of marines. 2 more devestators killed...two plasmacannons left. Apparently he was more concerned with the marines in the terrain shooting at him than my vehicles across the board. My vehicles can now move with relative impunity so long as I'm careful...there were a couple of melta's floating around somehwere. I charged the chaplain and final marine with another vet tactical squad killing both for a loss of 2. I consolidate back.
He moves his vet to try to assault the LR once again...with failure, he rolls snake eyes and is within 6" of terrain edge now for sure, but outside of 6" of the LR. His devs and tacticals shoot against my firebase but with negligible results.
I move to capture terrain features on my next turn. Dread and 1 vet tac squad are out of the fight to that end. LR blasts the lone vet with two lascannon shots. Preds and Sammael join the fight against his firebase again, with only missle launchers to threaten them. Devs destroyed, and tacticals starting to take hits.

Turn 5
I control table quarters and terrain features and move for better vehicle shots. for the rest of the game I just whittle away at him....he's done.

All this final game was was an escalating turkey shoot. My opponent saw that he couldnt outshoot me, so tried to rhino rush across a board with only a single hill in the center. All I wound up doing was moving onto the board and shooting.
My right flank got rushed with two tactical squads and the two predators. there was a bit of a hth fight over there but my 5 man vet tacticals held them up enough to give me time for more shooting. by 4th turn his dreads were either finished or had the weapons blown off once again giving my 14 armour units battlefield invincibility so long as I watched the meltas. His forward assault was stalled with his other two rhinos getting blown up after their first movements. The only other units to make it to my lines were the assault marines and Chappy, but they were welcomed by Azrael and company after killing a five man Vet tactical of mine.
his losses at the end of the game were both preds, all rhinoes 20 marines, a dread, weapons off of the other dread, and assault marines killed along with the chappy.
My losses wound up being a pred, 2 squads of tac marines with vet PW sarge and a couple of marines out of the command squad....it was ugly. considering the terrain, deployment ('L' against superior shooting) and make up of his army I thought he was doomed from the get-go. mad props to him making it to the end with another DA list though...I thought that was sort of neat.
...best general result for me...with DA...nice.
