or whatever they're called these days. There was a nice picture in the 3rd edition rulebook, which was basically some hooded feet with a gun, but still, I liked that.
for some reason, for most people, Hrud just seem to be space skaven. so, what do you know?

from what i have gathered over the forums so far, Hrud are a race similar to the jawas of tattooine from star wars, but that is from what i have gathered so far.. Interesting concept in my opinion, but i have not run into any references to them in anything except this forum..

pretty much the only thing we know for certain is that they are not space skaven. At least that's what GW is saying this week.
I'd really doubt the existence of any space skaven. Elves, Orcs, dwarves.. these are Fantasy archtypes that fit into GW's vision of Space Fantasy. There hasn't been an active "40k really is Warhammer in space" philosophy since the mid 90's. While some armies have thematic similarities to fantasy armies (IG to Empire, Chaos to Chaos, Necrons to VC) and other have strong play style similarities (tau to wood elves, Dark Eldar to Dark Elves), no army in 40k exactly synchs up to it's fantasy counterpart. The closest is Orks/Orcs, and they have hugely divergent fluff in the two universes.

I doubt we'll ever get more than a picture and a few cryptic references.
There's been references to Hurd Migrations and given the name Hurd=Herd they may be some sort of herbivore race.
Or not.

The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal. |

Space skaven as a race make the most sense though. Rats on a space hulk floateing thru the warp mutating into a sentient race makes more sense from a story stand point than some other GW has come up with. Rats can survive anything man!

Actually there was nice section on the Hrud in the Xenology. Basically they're stow-aways on imperial ships till they get where they're going and they slip off (sometimes taking imperial crewmen with them).
Apparently they also live in the underhive so maybe we'll see a necromunda rules set for them... wait its specialist games never mind.

Hrud are similar to Skaven in that they both use warp-based technology. It is possible that they were originally thought of as Space Skaven, but Xenology kind of put a stop to that as it showed what they actually look like and gave a lot more background. It sounds like you've read that book, I'm not aware of any other source book that has more info on Hrud.

I'm sure whilst treading either Eisenhorn or Ravenor there is a passing mention of Hurd somewhere and if i remeber right it may have said something about them being a warp born slave race, but that could be hugly wrong. Also don't the adeptus mechanicus use them or is that players just including them for 'fun' ?

Check out this link, found it in an image search for "hrud" (along with a whole bunch of pictures of a soloflex-type machine...Hrud-o-matic?):

In Xenology it's referred to as an artist's conception of Hrud without the cloak of "filth" with which they usually cover themselves.
