I'm just getting back into the habit after a few years away. I'm thinking of putting this list together. It would be a non-tournament, all takers list. The visual theme is World War I. I've lurked and tried to gather what I could from the IG regulars but my Mathhammer is terrible so please be gentle. :(

C Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Eridani Infantry Regiment
Major Henry J Patch (HI, MC) Commanding

Camoline Uniforms
Sharpshooters

Troops 1: 328 Points
Platoon Command Squad: 64 Points
Junior Officer (40)
Iron Dicipline (5)
Camoline Uniforms (10)
Grenade Launcher (8)
Bolt Pistol (1)

3 Infantry Squads: 88 Points each, 264 Total
Base (60)
Camoline Uniforms (10)
Heavy Bolter (10)
Grenade Launcher (8)

Troops 2: 328 Points

Heavy 1: 180 Points

Extra Armor (5)
Dozer Blade (5)

Heavy 2: 180 Points

Total: 1401 Points

This leaves me with 99 points left over. What should I do with them? I was considering trying to add an Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor in an Elites slot or maybe a small Vets squad, what do you guys think? EDIT: I could also add a Chimera for the Company Commander.

I know that Heavy Weapons squads aren't popular around here but I figure they will give my Tanks an extra round in the clear.

drop the heavy stubber, and dozer blade off of the leman russ, and you might as well replace the hull lascannon with a heavy bolter, because you won't be getting to use much other than the battlecannon much, and won't be moving much.

to save more points i'd also drop the Macharian cross, and Honorifica Imperialis as they just make the guy wrth more points than he should. command sections really aren't for close combat stuff, more for the extra guns, and leadership. not much else

You're right about the Leman Russ. Most of those were left overs from when this was going to be more of a cityfight army and the MBT was a Demolisher. I guess you could be right about the Mach cross, it's a lot of points for a "On second thought let's not put that tank out in plain sight" move. But I thought the HI was a good deal since it makes the commander Ld 9 rather than 8.

Your list as it stands is terribly static. If you are playing a scenario that require you to move onto the board to capture objectives, what are you going to do it with? I'd consider dropping the heavy bolter from a couple of those squads and giving them a plasma or meltagun and plan on them being on the move from the start, where any heavy weapon will be a waste. I know this won't be a popular sentiment on these boards, but I've played Guard as my primary army for 5 years and I'm speaking from my experience.

If you have 100 points (a bit more if you take Bastirous advice on your HQ, which is solid) get a Hellhound. Great tank.

Also, it's my opinion that the lascannons on the LR are a good investment, as there are plenty of times that the battle cannon is too risky to shoot because of scatter, like when the other guy has gotten the through the wire and is disgorging Rhinos in your perimeter.

Ok so far, but if you're not taking H-Vets, you should take Drop Troops. It's free and doesn't hurt anyone.

Ditch the Cross, Bolt Pistol, Power Weapon and Grenade Launcher. That's 34 points saved already. This unit should be 81 points... 91 with Cameleoline.

As far as AT squads go it's ok.

Lose the GL and the Bolt Pistol. You'll never use them. 43 points saved so far.

Good Lord...

For 2 points more per squad, you can swap the S6 AP4 firepower of the GLs for S7 AP2 firepower. GL's are a complete waste.

Personally though, I'd make these cannon fodder 76 point HB/Flamer squads, or 86 with Cameleoline. That's 2 points per squad, over three squads, so a further 6 points saved. We're at 49 points now.

Doctor Optimal wrote:Troops 2: 328 Points

Which is a terrible idea. This platoon should be all AC/Plasma Guns. For the moment though we'll just ditch the GL's for Flamers, as Flamers actually have a use, and that Bolt Pistol. 64 point saved.

Lascannon will never be used. 10 more points saved. The smoke will never be used. 3 more points saved. The Stubber should never be there (12 points for 3 S4 AP6 shots vs 10 points for 6 S5 AP4 shots - do you see how the Stubber is a false economy). 12 more epoints saved. Dozer Blade is a waste on this tank. 5 more points saved. 95 points saved - you can buy a well equipped squad for that!!!

Doctor Optimal wrote:Heavy 2: 180 Points

And a further 30 points saved. That's 125 points saved just by cutting the bloat in this list. Amazing! Plus the 99 points you have left over and we've got 224 points! That's a whole extra platoon!!!

So, what to do? Well, were I rebuilding your list to match the one above, but change things around a bit to optimise them - without changing the structure that is - it would look like this:

Command Platoon - 351
CHQ - 91 Points

JO (40) w/Honorifica (25) + Iron Disicpline (5)
Standard Bearer (11)
Cameleoline (10)

Anti-Tank Squad - 130 Points
6 Guardsmen (35) w/3 Lascannons (75)
Sharpshooters (10)
Cameleoline (10)

Anti-Tank Squad - 130 Points
6 Guardsmen (35) w/3 Lascannons (75)
Sharpshooters (10)
Cameleoline (10)

Infantry Platoon - 459
Command Section - 79

JO (40) w/Iron Dicipline (5)
4 Flamers (24)
Cameleoline (10)

Infantry Squad #1 - 95 Points
10 Guardsmen (60)
Autocannon (15)
Plasma Gun (10)
Cameleoline (10)

Infantry Squad #2 - 95 Points
10 Guardsmen (60)
Autocannon (15)
Plasma Gun (10)

Infantry Squad #3 - 95 Points
10 Guardsmen (60)
Autocannon (15)
Plasma Gun (10)

Infantry Squad #4 - 95 Points
10 Guardsmen (60)
Autocannon (15)
Plasma Gun (10)

Infantry Platoon - 337
Command Section - 79

JO (40) w/Iron Dicipline (5)
4 Flamers (24)
Cameleoline (10)

Infantry Squad #1 - 86 Points
10 Guardsmen (60)
Heavy Bolter (10)
Flamer (6)
Cameleoline (10)

Infantry Squad #2 - 86 Points
10 Guardsmen (60)
Heavy Bolter (10)
Flamer (6)
Cameleoline (10)

Infantry Squad #3 - 86 Points
10 Guardsmen (60)
Heavy Bolter (10)
Flamer (6)
Cameleoline (10)

Russ - 160 Points
Battlecannon (140)
3 Heavy Bolters (15)
Extra Armour (5)

Russ - 160 Points
Battlecannon (140)
3 Heavy Bolters (15)
Extra Armour (5)

Now, this leaves 33 points. What to do with 33 points is up to you I 'spose. You could drop an AC/Plas squad, get 95 points back, and then you'd have 128 to spend. Spend on what is a good question though (3 Plas H-Vet Squads are 75 points, just so you know). Alternativley, if you ditch the Flamers in the Platoon Command Sections and both lots of Sharpshooters you can get another HB/Flamer Squad for the second platoon.

Just food for thought.

HBMC:
I agree on the company command squad. The whole "officers having bolt pistols" thing was mostly for fluff.

I've never been a fan of the sponsons on the Russes but if they work they work. Plus they make it look even more WW I.

Four flamers in the PlatComs? I always thought the staff was just there as ablalative armor for the Iron Discipline officer.

What about including an Autocannon/PG squad in each platoon as low level fire support for the other HB/Flamer squads? Maybe 2:1 HB/Flamer to AC/PG? If there is a reason to concentrate the Autocannon in one platoon that changes it of course.

Maybe I can add that Hellhound in also...

The flamer command squads are for counterassault. They're there to damage an assaulting squad, then get wiped out by the remnants of it and setting the assaulting squad in position to get soaked by fire from your other units.

You'll want to add in the Hellhound for some mobility, if nothing else.
