I've been thinking of making a Crimson Fist army using all Mark VI Beaky armor. My Rogue Trader was lost to the warp some time ago, but I recall there being an illustration showing the markings that were used on the helmets to distinguish the different squads and such. If anyone has a scan of that or knows a page that shows it I would appreciate it.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

I know the exact page you're talking about, Ahtman - unfortunately, I don't have a copy of RT anymore or I'd be happy to scan it for you. I'll look around a bit more and see if I can't dig anything up for you.

Actually, ask Kid Kyoto. He seems to have various oddball older GW publications.

Good news for you:

Man, I remember trying to paint those markings on my RTB01 beakies. What a pain!

I really do miss the old school armour...

of course, the art is much better these days, as is the fluff.

I remember painting all my original blood angels up this way, only to have GW change everything just as 2nd Ed was coming out. :(

QFT. I had all my Dark Angels painted up with appropriate chapter designations on the RIGHT knee as instructed in Codex: Angels of Darkness, and the 1st edition (and update) Dark Angel codex. This left the left kneepad for ARMY designation. When I opened up the 2nd edition DA codex, I suddenly find that I'm expected to change all the knee pads.

THAT!!!

I'd like to thank all that have helped so far. The pic above helps but the one I'm thinking of was a color picture. If I find it before it gets posted I'll post it myself.

You know, Ahtman, I thought for sure that it was in color, too. But I didn't see one. I'll take another look at my RT to see if I can find the one in color, but I think it may be my memory acting up on me.

Okay, after a longer look, I found the color helmet and shoulder pad markings on the pages with the color schemes of some of the SM Legions.

Are these the ones you're remembering?

Additionally, there's a diagram for IG markings in B&W similar to the previous B&W SM one I posted earlier.

And for the sake of posterity, the color pics above are from the two-page spread in the middle of RT, showing the SM Legion line-up at the time, which included (color scheme in parentheses):
- Dark Angels (Black w/ Red)
- Flesh Eaters (Red w/ White)
- Flesh Tearers (Black w/ Yellow)
- Blood Angels (Red w/ Black)
- Blood Drinkers (Red w/ Yellow)
- Crimson Fists (Blue w/ Red)
- Space Wolves (Gray w/ Yellow and Red)
- Ultramarines (Blue w/ White)
- White Scars (White w/ Red and Yellow)
- Iron Hands (Black w/ White)
- Rainbow Warriors (Blue w/ Red, Yellow, and White)
- Iron Skulls (Gray w/ Black and White)

Also shown are examples of SM Chaplains, Field Police, and Medics.

Forehead studs are 10 years service per stud? I really hope they have studs worth more than that (50 or 100), or there would be a lot of seriously bumpy Marine foreheads out there.

Come to think of it, I haven't seen forehead studs in Marine illustrations in some time. Think they've been phased out?

Last I heard the forehead studs were a sign of rank. 3 studs was a captain for example.

No, they were service length studs. I'm pretty sure they've been changed though. I think it's 1 stud for every 100 years or something like that.

Yeah, KiMon's got the number on this one. While we don't see the forehead studs as often in the artwork, it has gotten to be more common on the minis in the last plastic SM sets.

So a Crimson Fists Captain would have a black helmet with white stripe or did they switch to a (pre-Heresy) Dark Angels Helmet for the Captain?

Thats the picture I was thinking of so thanks a bunch

I believe what they're saying there is that, yup, a captain would have a black helmet with a white stripe. Or you can just get around it by having your captain have no helmet...that's always seemed popular. Hm. Wonder if that's why so many SM commanders don't wear helmets - they don't want their helmet colors to clash with their Chapter colors.
