Yea, I cant stand the Ultramarines, I play SM and find GWs obsession with them disgusting. The only reason the Ultramarines ( from now on) were such a massive force after the Horus Heresy was that they dodged the bullet several times in the Horus Heresy. Think about it werent at the Drop Site Massacre, they didnt actually fight at the Seige of Terra, in fact for the entire uprising they were mired in the warp. Then you have some of the restrictions that Guiliman put on all space marine chapters, with all the power his legion had left over from all that not fighting he did in the Heresy, he could have easilly kept the other legions in line had they lost it for a good long time (hell Ravenguard are still recorvering). And finally, using his Codex as a universal cure-all for tactics makes the Imperium pretty easy to predict on the battlefeild which is never a good thing, plus Guiliman was woman enough to hack off his own proverbial balls (and possibly his real ones too) by actually nerfing his legion to get the others to go along with it, and even then most of them still ignored at least a few of the codex rules he laid down.

sorry if thats a bit preachy or ranty, just had to get it off my chest

oh, yea its been building since I got my codex and all the art was Ultramarines. since I read all the background stories and realized how easy a time ofit the Ultramarines got. Since I tried to look for cool personalized SM armies online and only saw Ultramarines. It jsut kinda burst out, I didnt realize what I was doing untill I had already hit the submit button and it was too late...

ultamarines = beginers = stanard = boring = the gw equivilant of dafodils and pansies - pretty things that you can imagine have a face and are more than what they seem at first, and then you look a little bit closer and .... no they are still just a pansie, nothing else there.

And gaunlets of macragge? riiiiight, because they're such a cool weapon every other chapters copied and strapped a bolter to a power fist and added a small amount of other gadgetery.

OOO hang on they are cool! They look big and tuff so he doesn't actually have to fight to show he's tuff, another reason to sit at the back drinking tea while the other chapters get their faces in the mud.

In defense of the Vanilla Marines, the only reason they weren't at Istvaan was that Horus sent them to the other side of the Galaxy out of fear for what they could do.

Also they were busy defending Macragge from the Word Bearers Legion during the Siege of Terra.

I do however dislike the focus on the Ultramarines by GW, I guess it has something to do with them being simple to paint for a beginner and are a striking figure. I hope that if they decided to re-do the CODEX for 5th ed, they focus it on a different Chapter.

I think it was best put by Torgaddon in Horus Rising:

The problem with Ultramarines, is that just so damn many of them

Stop the hate. I dont play ultramarines I play SW, So what if they are the poster boys of GW.

UltraMarines are total LOSERS. I hate them, thier stupid 'Symbol' and Guilliman and the "Nid' Gun ammo his pansies have.

I am a SM player, always have been, always will be.

But most of the 'Established' Chapters are sad as well.

I liked the 'Emo' call on the Black Templars.

And rightly so. Most of the established chapters have given us most of the fluff the 40K universe is based on so saying they are sad is a bit pointless

Thanks for the correction Sir, I missed that!

Seeing as the whole point of the thread was a humourous, tongue in cheek poke at the Ultra's, your standpoint is pointless.

Ultramarines were the factor that sent me to the dark side. after my IG guys keep getting cut down in the open and then had to hide in cover till i found Carpace. BEFORE the new chaos dex i was painting a 1K sons army , and after the new dex came out i was finished with my army and now with ap3 bolter in hand i cut down the marines and it all came full circle in destroying what i hated i now have become what i hated .

I don't have a personal problem with Ultramarines but they do tend to be shoved into everyones face that they are the endall of all marines, whilst BA, DA, SW etc don't get the a lot of showing.

If you want to play a standard simple generic army, play Ultramarines, if you lean toward a certain play style then choose BA, DA, SW, BT etc.

Nothing wrong with a rant every now and then

As much I hate the Ultra Marines I cannot state that they are pansies. Maybe while the Horus heresy they did not do anything exraordinary (they saved the Imperial Fists once getting crushed by IW) but they stopped the 'nids twice and without the Ultrau Boyscouts the Devourer of Worlds would've taken a larger bite out of the galaxy. The anti Tyranidfluff is just underepresented in models an special Rules that is why no one pays attention to it. A Tyranid Hunter Themed Ultra Marine Army might be very charakterful and less pansy like.

Well, my Ultramarines are pansies. They've gotten their butts kicked sooooo many times! Our legion sings songs about Macragge, but when I accidentally decide to put my Devastators within 18" of a pack of Slaanesh-worshipping Chaos Raptors? Believe me, nobody wants to talk about it.

Oddly, I never would have played if not for a batch of free shoulder pads getting sent my way on accident. In fact, I struggled against painting them as Ultras for ages!

But y'know, the Ultramarines are iconic. When they lose, everyone's all "Yeah! We stuck it to those fascist bastards!" And when I win, I'm all, "Yeah! That's right! The fascists win again!" They're a great starter army (Did I mention they're my first army and I'm a beginner? I'm living the stereotype!) because they're easy to understand, easy to branch out from, and they've got an unfair amount of GW support ^_^

So really, it all boils down to 'don't hate the player, hate the game.' And who wants to play against an army they like? What would that even be like, fighting an army everyone loves? Going up against a bunch of orks with no choppas or shootas in open terrain?

I'm pretty sure that's not in the Codex Astartes!

I like em for their paint job, plain and simple. Though I play dark angels cause when deciding on either them or the New Chaos Codex I rolled a 3... and for that I have never forgiven myself.

Actually, I'm agnostic and Black Templars are my favorite chapter. And they aren't any more zealous than the Grey Knights or Imperial Fists or Ultramarines. They all have to be, because if they aren't, they're deemed as heretics and blown to kingdom-come. ^^

LOL, I was actually reffering to the part that they are named after the knights Templar, and they also have that thing where they go crazy and try to catch the nearest thing to them with utter disregard for strategy and tactics. (You can call them Rabid Emperorists but it doesn't sound as cool)

I know that they were named (and modeled, considering the cross and color scheme) after the Knights Templar, but I don't see how their random psycho flipouts make them any more like Christians. I do notice the similarity in the sense that they both thoroughly hate witches, though. ^^

My marines are Eagle Warriors, a successor chapter of the Ultramarines. I picked them after looking at bunches of paint schemes and deciding I like theirs best. In terms of pure visceral appeal, I like the Space Wolves, Black Templars and Blood Angels. Those chapters and others however, are about as far from making military sense as it gets. Destroying the enemy is about brains before brawn, but the fluff for these chapters shows them to be poor decision makers, frothing maniacs on the field, and uninterested in basic communication or battlefield strategy.

I can see the appeal berserkers and intolerant xenophobes have on players, heck it's nice to paint the universe in black and white. That's part of why I play this game. But when I imagine a space marine, I think of controlled violence, martial mastery and above all, a veteran of a thousand battles. The Ultramarines and Dan Abnett's Iron Snakes get my vote for the most efficient and impactful representations of marines. They think, then they act, just as violently as other chapters, but to better effect. If I want berserk nutters, I'll play my orks or chaos.

If more of us valued food and cheer and 40K over hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

OMG that's amazing! I was laughing the entire way through and it only got worse (or better?). A lot of the first ones from his were like mine, but funnier. That rivals the 653 commandments of the Adeptus Astartes for hilarity.
