Good morning folks. I am in the middle of building a Confederate Guard Army. Of course the theme is a Civil War flavor. The uniforms are two tone gray. The Lascannons and Autocannon are mounted on fantasy empire cannon carriages. All officers to include platoon leaders are on horse back. Oh and let us not forget my rough riders! I am using Cadian torso on fantasy pistoleers legs and horses lead by none other than Nathan Bedford Forrest. At the moment it really looks like a confederate army for the most part.

Now for the hard part. The problem I have is getting vehicles into this theme reasonably. I will use a minimum of 2 Leman Russes and one Hellhound. I have decided to make any vehicles look as old rusted steampunk stuff. I already have the color issue resolved. It has already been suggested to me to just stick a bunch of gears, cogs, and pipes around the vehicle. I don't want it to just look like a Leman or Hellhound with a bunch of junk glued to the sides.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Dude, didn't we *just* finish going over the Nazi army, and now we're doing ACW Confederates?

I think he's ok if he avoids any obvious Confederacy items. Right now it sounds like a generic kind of feral world force.

I think you've got a pretty good idea overall of your basic theme.

My one suggestion would be to leave out the Confederate flag. It doesn't serve you any purpose on the 40k battlefield than to induce the ire of a lot of the community.

The steampunk idea sounds like it will really add a lot of flavor to the army. You might think to use real world tank kits for tracks. I'll see what I can dig up as far as kits are concerned.

I would look up some old Civil war era "mad science" type stuff. Think "Merrimack" that didn't quite work out. A train of sorts with plating and modified for off track use. For a basilisk I would make a very large horse drawn carrige gun, with little guys on the sides pushing the huge thing to get it into position.

I say "would" in the sense of "this is what I will do when I get around to making my early 19th century Mad Boy army."

Ramshackle Games could also be a source of steam punk inspiration.

I'm liking it. The little inscriptions (battle honors) are very 40k'ey. A color printer would do wonders with this.

Maybe a wheeled Hellhound like this but I have no idea what the parts would come from. A scratch builder I am not. If I can get the basic idea and what parts would come from what then I can do.

It looks like an Ork vehicle. You could take an ork vehicle, tweek and add your guardsmen. it would fit actually with the theme of your force. Just no assault ramps though.

Consider using MageKnight dwarven war machines as starter bitz. Take off the deathroller-looking thingies, and you've got a decent steampunk tank. Plus you can trade off the rollers to your Ork friends to defray your need for additional bitz.

I would second the suggestion to avoid the stars & bars. Perhaps an alternative would be better.

For example, maybe shift the flag to blue bars on a white background, with a prominent golden Imperial eagle?

Personally, I like the design for their banner, I'd just change the Arkansas part. This is supposed to be the 41st millennium, I doubt there's even an Arkansas in existence. Well.. maybe there could be a planet Arkansas, I suppose.

The problem with the rebel flag isn't so much that it was a symbol of hate as mush as the fact that small minded individuals (namely, neo-nazis and KKK members) have turned it into that. At the time it was just a flag to represent the C.S.A.'s army. An army formed in order to fight against violations of their state's rights.(atleast that's what they claimed at the time, I wasn't around, I wouldn't know for sure) It's kinda like wearing a red bandana to me, some people see it as a red bandana, some people see it as gang colors and want to kill you for it..

I think the actual Cadia banner is the one he is referring to, having used the Arkansas banner as a base. I like the changes and the Cadian banner actually. The interesting question I have is, would this remind someone more of a British flag?

That would be an interesting twist. Though I think you'd have to lose the stars and add some more bars. Though even if you just lost the stars you start getting a much different flag. I think if you just lose some of the surrounding stars and leave just the middle one, You will have a more symbolic cadian flag. The lone star/system guarded by the cadian gate.

Make the inferno cannon from some Ork burnas and the turret from, say, one of those plastic domes you get cheap toys from the machines at the front of grocery stores.

That looks like a chimera with track guard for mudbumpers, the toy turrent (would NOT have guessed that one excellent) and a wheels from?

The turret is just the Predator AC turret (the toy bubble was a suggestion to emulate the rounded look of the AC above). The wheels are Trumpeter LAV wheels (8 in a ~$10 set at scalehobbyist.com).

And here's a thought. If the battle flag brings up bad memories, how about a different southern flag? The first confederate Navy jack is a historically-based flag without the ugly connotations the standard confederate flag has.

WOW, that is kind of a ballsy army you are putting together, a few too many loaded connotations aned subtexts there for me. Though, if you do put together the army I highly recomend that you model Strom Thurman as the general.

Where are the connotations again? The only remarkable thing so far is the brigade banner. The Cadian variant (mayhaps with only one center star) should look completely unrecognizable as a brigade flag. Everything else is just a feral /Mordian style unit.
