Haha, my first topic on the dakka forum, I thought I might as well join here as well, been browsing here a bit lately.
A while ago I entered a competition over at hobbyhawk in which we had to build a look-out tower to spot our missing guru Hobbes . Anyway, the first thing I came up with was a crows-nest on top of a long pole with lines at each corner to keep the thing from snapping/falling. Of course there was only one race which would be crazy enough for something like that… Orks of course! So having decided what to build I started out by modifying a chimera turret into the platform for the crows-nest and looking for a long pole to place it upon. Of course being me, the project changed faster than I could build it. I found an old chimera from when I wanted a mechanized guard army and decided to stick the pole (which I didn’t have yet) on top of it. By this time I already made the primary gun for the nest, a double barrelled cutie, and the platform became to small. Rather than enlarging it, I decided to make a new one. In the meantime, the chimera suddenly had an experimental turret and was rapidly growing both a warp gun/lightning gun sidecar and a side sponson with twinlinked lascannon. Also it removed part of the crew area, enlarged the floor platform and placed a base for the tower on it (moveable, with magnets). From this base two long H-beams emerged and were attached to the platform with some random Lego bits. Pistons and tubing appeared and suddenly there was a complete mobile look-out on my table. All I needed to do was lure an Ork into it and I would be finished. Well, enough rambling, picture time;

Yes, the complete impression, it is high, about 30 cm

Electric gun thingy, no idea what the count as would be, I just really wanted a side car weapon and all other ideas were too large.

The nest, complete with big gun, smaller gun, searchlight and:

Ork reflecting on his life and what he could have done to be in this high deathtrap.

And lastly, some random detail shots:

I decided to go for a reinforced armour look for the turret with the neck of the turret protected by loose plates hanging on metal rings.

I’m kindof refitting the thing now, I’ll be adding another option for the look-out tower; a power crane/towing crane and some extra cabling and armour plates are being made slowly but steadily. Also, I need a sleeping driver in a hammock or something.

I think I’ll be putting it on ebay when it’s done, although I’m hearing a lot of negative comments on the fees ebay’s demanding these days... anyone some advice on that?

Well, anyone in for some C&C?

Sorry, but that's funny.

How does painting stuff like this affect the movable parts?

Love it ! I'd suggest your side gun is a Long Barrelled Zzap Gun. What is the black ribbed cableing made from ?

A bit of everything really....... Titanicus, Bolt Action, Cruel Seas, Black Seas, Blood Red Skies, Kingdom Death, Relic Knights, DUST Tactics, Zombicide the lit goes on.............

Yup, looks like a Zzap gun to me. Very nice one, at that.

Fantastic work. The Ork in the turret could use a little more work... he hand looks a little rough, and the legs really need some repositioning to look more 'sitting'. At a first glance, he appears to be falling backwards rather than sitting down.

Lovely job on the vehicle though.

I got a good laugh at the mug, or what I believe to be a mug. Is that like bass guitar string you used as cabling?

Mug? I thought it was a roll of toilet paper...

I mean, what else would an ork put in something like that. :p

@ malfred; What's so funny? and the painting won't be effected for two reasons;
1. The moving parts are not in plain view, i.e. underneath the turret, underneath the tower base etc.
2. I don't paint (much)

@ secretsquig: The cabling is old springs used in stores to hang stuff from the ceiling, I kindof borrowed it from my old job....

@ insaniak: I kindof rushed the ork for the compitition hence the crappy finish, but I'm working on it.

Yes people, it's a mug. He is drinking a big cup of coco and thinking about the meaning of life.
but the toilet roll does give me an idea for another build.... maybe later..

and about the zapp gun, that's basicly a lascannon right?

Any other ideas about improving it?

I actually thought ork was having a cup of coffee and a smoke up there, but apparently he's all out of cigs

Nice build, very well done and looks good and orky. Dig that it's so asymetric with one sidecar, etc.
