I pre-ordered my gamer edition rulebook with ammo case. Received at midnight. I'm impressed with ammo case. Solid metal with child proof entry.

Will be reading rulebook most of the night. Game tokens are cool and seem to be very useful.

We had 400 pt combat patrol tourney (4th ed rules) at 9pm. GW supplied prizes

I took 3rd and had best appearance, but due to stip on no doubling up on prizes I took $45 box. My choice razorback and 5 man tactical.

Just looking for opinions and what people think of quality of overall rules and how they are presented in book.

2012 tourney record:

Deathwing 21W-7L-6D Overall x4 Best General x1 Best Appearance x3, 19th place Adepticon 40k Champs.

I really like the new book. The presentation is far superior to 4th ed. Although I would have liked some more extensive fluff for the xenos races.

The rules layout seems to be much more logical and well thought out. Also, the rules don't seem as open to misuse and abuse as the old edition (although only time will tell with this one).

The game is definitely written from a social / club gaming perspective rather than from a competitive / tourney one.

The FAQs (which went up very quickly) have good and bad bits. Some of them are a little clumsily and seem to have been rushed.

Two big thumbs up for the rule book.
A "meh" for the FAQs.

Overall I'm very very impressed.

How's the art? original stuff or mostly recycled?

Anything new in the fluff?

My favorite bit of the 3rd edition book was the shot that introduced the Kroot and Hurd, and the bit of fluff about the Star Child. Anything like that hinting at the wider 40k 'verse and the future?

The Gamers Edition was a great idea. My friends in another state could not get one through their FLGS and called me up to see about getting them one (this happened 2 months ago). The intent here is to continue support for local game shops as opposed to ordering it online.

Fast forward to yesterday. I get a call from the shop indicating they are in. I arrive and I only have one waiting for me. GW sent the shop a very limited number of them. I was a bit discouraged by this, especially since I asked about these 2 months ago and offered to prepay for the items. I had to pick up one measly copy and let my friends decide who will get it. I went to the GW website and it is also sold out. I called another shop to see if they had an extra copy: no luck.

GW had a great idea regarding the Gamers Edition. Too bad their execution of getting the product to the customer was so bad.

Also boo to GW since we could have simply preordered it two months ago from them directly and leave the FLGS's in more of a lurch. What was a guaranteed $400 sale at a shop turned into $100 and feeling a bit burned. Wish GW would back up what they print in WD-support your local game shop.

Shame because it is a fantastic book, mini carrier and template set.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Just picked up the markerlight today. Cheap and lightweight, but seems OK. Depending upon the surface it's being bounced off, the crosshair image projected is bright and clear under natural light out to well beyond 10' .. visible but la bit less distinct under UV.

Packaging tags it as a Class 2 laser and it's apparently 'RoHS compliant', which I'm sure comes as a great relief to us all.

@ JHDD.....thanks

After a bit of reading it seems rules are written in way that will lead to less misinterpretation. Very well written (from what I read, so far).

All we really want is a well written rule book.

FAQ on GW site, I assume.

On gamer edition......Owner (friend of mine) of store I got mine from told me on Monday that GW was asking retailers if they wanted to reduce numbers they were to receive and GW would pay them back their profit margin from lost sale. My friend owns 2 fairly large hobby stores and was allocated only 4 copies of gamer edition.

Laser pointer really needed? I'd like to believe my 20/20 is good enough, lol. Always some who need the satisfaction of knowing visually that their shot is out of sight, I guess.

About FAQ.....Are we talking about the army specific FAQ from awhile back on GW website or 40k 5th edition rulebook FAQ?

I have only seen army specific. Is there any other? If so, can anyone throw down the link? Thanks

No rulebook FAQ, yet. The army-specific FAQ's are suspect and look like a cut and paste job of 4th Ed. FAQ's.

I don't think that they did a bad job at all. In any situation like this, half the responsibility lies with GW, and half with the LGS.

First and foremost, it's good if the store is paying attention to what's coming out, what might be limited, and what people are going to look for. Checking Dakka now and then makes that easy. I saw the picture of the ammo case, and lots of people saying "I want one", and made sure to call GW the next day. Placed my pre-order for the ammo cases and got 20 for each of my stores. I then posted the info to our website, told all the gamers, and took pre-orders. No problems everyone happy.

On the other hand, if a store isn't paying attention, and isn't talking to their sales rep a lot, they might miss out. Each rep only had so many to pass out. They tried to get them to stores that asked for them, and stores that do a lot of business with them. (Doing a lot of business with GW means you have more gamers, plain and simple.)

GW tried to get more made, but the time to manufacture them is simply to long. I wouldn't doubt that they do more later though, as popular as they are. This was a case of something cool having a high demand and not enough supply.

It's a good example of why I tune in to Dakka every night. Dakka usually has all the info, and keeps me caught up. Some people running stores don't even know what Dakka is.

Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

With all the positive feedback concerning the Gamers edition and the 5e rulebook in general, I thought I'd put in my 2 cents.

I picked up the collectors edition. I'm going out on a limb and having to swallow some self pride in saying this but....I really love this book, and I'm proud to own #3579 of 4000.

I havent been this 'satisfied' with a GW product in a long time. It's REALLY nice.

Strong binding, pages are of a superior quality paper, and the material on the outer cover and tri-fold simply "makes the book feel important" and has a magnet built in to assist in 'not accidentally falling open'. Effort was actually put into this book and I'm 100% satisfied with it.

I know its a super fanboi thing to have for 90 bucks, but its really worth the money. At first glance I rather worry about the tri-fold and the 'functionality' of it but I have a pdf copy of the rulebook ran off for a "gamers edition" in my own binder held together with page protectors, tabs and notations of my own.

I've been TOTALLY against these "collectors edition" rulebooks since they started coming out with them. The knowledge that the book will be absolutely useless in 4 or so years is a big deterrent. My worries are put to rest now though, I didnt make a mistake and am totally satisfied with this product. Thanx GW, you've restored just a tiny bit of faith in me.

I have never failed to seize on 4+ in my life!

Amen sir. I feel the same way.

I've always wanted to own a big heavy 'smiting bible' ever since I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones busts out that heavy tome and unlatches the dang thing. Big nicely made books are just fun to have.

This collector's edition 5th edition rulebook finally makes me feel like I have a book I could really 'smite' someone with.

I *love* the parchment paper too!

Under the couch

Got my Gamer's Edition today.

I had expected the bolter case to be just thin tinplate... Very pleasantly surprised by the quality of this thing. A real ammo box would have heavier hinges and latches, but otherwise this thing rocks.

I missed out on the nerd edition because my local store waited too long to try and order them. I only got the news too late so I had to just settle on the straight up rulebook. It's probably for the best witht the money savings and all but whatever.

I like the artwork and the modeling secitions that take up the last half of the book, but while flipping through last night I stopped to admire a fantastically painted chaos squad and on the opposite page (223 I think) the squad alongside the rest of it's force. Upon closer inspection it is apparent that the photo has been edited to make it appear that there are two squads of chaos space marines when in fact there is only the same one photographed twice. The polygon lasso cut mark can even be seen between the two clone squads! I don't mind shots like this ( I love the Cadian army pic in the IG dex) but it was just a little funny to me since they have a whole page dedicated to the squad and then on the opposite leaf they try to show us how it looks in a complete force! ...as long as you put a mirror on the table I guess!

As far as the rules go I was happy with the adjusted line of sight and casualty removal rules. I was absolutely dissapointed with the assault result and morale check rules though! I thought that the days of single powerful characters wiping out units 30 to 40 times their size with sweeping advance was gone! In the new rules it is now even MORE likely that this situation will happen with the adjusted morale modifiers.

Finally it looks like Armored Company is dead again. I thought it would still be cool because "Troops" count as scoring and most Leman Russ's in AC are Troops, but a unit smust be a non-vehicle Troops choice now to score.

Oh well, even with all of the weirdness I just mentioned I think it will be a fun evolution of the game. It's always been a beer & pretzels game and V5 hasn't changed that. As long as you have some great people to play against (and luckily I do) the game will probably be more fun than it was before.

I finished reading though the rules the other night, and I must say they've done a good job this time around. Looks like they finally listened to us and spent time proof reading and closing up all (or at least most of) the loop holes and vague rules. Lots of clarification on how terrain works and what to do in various odd situations.

All in all, I'm very pleased. Now to get some games in.

overall, i am VERRRRRY happy w/ the new rules (and the ONLY copy of the gamers edition set in the 2 FLGS's that i frequent....that i no of )

the thing that makes me the happiest is the casualty removal rules....the fact that 1 wound in the squad can actually take out an important mini in the squad makes me happy (but at the same time a little sad, but the happieness overshadows this a lot).

my 2 cents
