Got my gamers edition of the rulebook today, with the groovy bolter ammo crate. Came filled with egg carton foam. I'm thinking of using mine to store my BFG ships since I don't have a whole lot .. my whole fleet will fit in there with room left over.

So what are you gonna do with yours?

Mine is back home, won't see it for a while. How much space is in theere for minis? Will it accept the GW foams?

I don't use the GW cases so I don't know.. but I don't think it's big enough.. you should be able to get a decent amt of regular figures in it.. a few squads.. good for samller armies if you're just starting out or whatever

I am going to do a bit of 'converting' on mine... gonna spray paint it bright-red, spray-paint a few black stripes across it, then print a stencil on paper, cut it out, and spray paint the white symbol for Saim Hann across it.

39 figures fit in foam.

I'm going to use it to carry dice, rulebook, tape measure, game counters, codex. In worst case scenarios I can swing it and crush a skull, lol

Bolters do use caseless ammunition hence the ejector port on the side.

When i get my crate its primary use will be a bookstand

You just agreed with me, but I'll assume you were trying to rebut.

One: Bolters use caseless ammunition. It's canon, I believe in the third edtion codex it's mentioned.

Two: even a rifle firing caseless ammunition needs an exterior bolt handle, and most likely some venting at the breech. The bolt handle is used to load the first round from the magazine into the chamber for firing, and also to eject any unspent rounds when the weapon is made safe for stowage.

The 3rd edition rulebook had a cutaway diagram of various types of bolter round.

The standard bolter round pictured has a case.

Older fluff refers to bolters using caseless ammo. Newer fluff and most of the artwork over 40K's history says otherwise.

So the best you can get as 'canon' is that some bolters use caseless ammo.

The master paint kit came with a bolter 'shell'. The Death Korps of Krieg Heavy Bolters come with spent shells.

It's not much, but enough to cause me to believe they have cases.

More on topic: I was thinking about buying a pistol. If I do, I'm probably going to stow it in this thing.

Otherwise I'm going to see if I can shove some tank foam in there and make it my 'current project' box for vehicles, like my chessex cases are for my infantry.

For the moment it's just doing its thing, looking awesome.

I seem to remember bolter shells having cases. In fact, the only caseless ammunition I remember being described was autoguns. I believe both the Necromunda books and the 2nd edition wargear book compare them to 20th century autoloading weapons, but caseless. I could have my references wrong, but I remember that.

I have found that my rulebook fits nicely inside so probably will use it for that. I bought it mostly before it looks cool so it will be displayed as such.

Well, originally bolters were caseless. Unfortunately the forgeworlds making the caseless rounds were eaten by Squats. Since then they've had to resort to lower tech "Cased rounds," that were discovered by Hans Case after a 500 year perusal of the archives on Sigma Prime, finally finding the STC in a stack of periodicals next to a Viii model waste evacuation chute. You'll remember Case, who also discovered the soft and hard cased travelling boxwear sported by all the hippest Mechanicus Adepts, as well as the more commonly used Case of Beer. This is also why guardsmen are no longer permitted to have assault cannon, they did not have enough rounds to go around

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

Actually technically bolters use mini rockets and that "ejector" port is actually a vent release to prevent over pressurization.

While I suspect you've confused this statement slightly, it's worth pointing out that as was mentioned earlier in the thread, whether or not the ammunition is cased or caseless, the weapon still needs an ejection port.

Given that the wiki you just linked to mentions that the initial propelant charge is enclosed in an outer case, I would think the ejection port is more likely an ejection port...
