Emo to be made illegal in Russia?

New laws planned to stop 'dangerous teen trends'

A new Russian law could make being an emo kid illegal in the eastern European country.

Legislation is currenting being formulated in Russia to heavily regulate emo websites and ban emo and goth dress style in schools and government buildings.

The new laws are apparently being driven by fears that these "dangerous teen trends" encourage depression and suicide.

The legislation was presented last month at a hearing held by the State Durma, where critics claimed that the "negative" emo culture encourages anti-social behaviour and glorifies suicide.

Emo kids were described as teenagers who wear black, have facial piercings and black hair with fringes that "cover half the face", reports The Guardian

The weekend saw mass protests by Russian emo kids.

In Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, where laws are already being implemented, protestors in a march held signs saying "A Totalitarian State Encourages Stupidity".

Dmitry Gilevich of Russian emo band MAIO stepped in backing the protests, saying: "Expressing psychological emotions is not forbidden by law."

However, emo critics remain unconvinced.

Alexander Grishunin, an adviser to bill sponsor Yevgeny Yuryev, described a ban as necessary, stating: "This is the first step in the public discourse."

The moves in Russia follow criticism of the genre in the UK earlier this year, which saw My Chemical Romance fans protesting at the offices of British newspaper The Daily Mail over their coverage which linked emo with suicide.

I thought the scene is dying anyway. It's all indie and nu rave these days. Which sounds better Imo.

I remember reading somewhere (Rolling Stone?) that emos are being targeted by skinheads and others in Mexico, especially outside the major cities. Kind of interesting how this scene has inspired a much more violent response than many previous incarnations (goths, metalheads, etc.).

So emo kids are cutting themselves and commiting suicide? Where's the problem? The way I see it, that's an unemployment solution right there. Not to mention the benifits for population control. I think they need to pass out free razor blades instead of working on legislation.

dont' ban it, round them up and study them.

it could be educational and give p.e.t.a. something to not worry about.

Yes, because a ban is always the first step in the public discourse. Thanks for that bit of insight.

Yeah, I remember hearing about that too, Syr. I personally don't get what the big deal about Emo is, or what it is about them that makes them such a popular target compared to other sub-cultures. Kind of sickening, really. Like people don't have anything better to do than mess with other people, but I guess that's kind of what hate groups are about.

Come on, every generation has to have some sort of sub culture for the main stream to hate / pick on. In the 50's is was greasers, in the 60's it was hippies, no one remembers the 70's, the 80's had punks and metalheads, the 90's had ravers (at least sort of), and now we got emo. Sooner or later is will all die out (literaly maybe) and something else will step in to fill the void that is the general populace's target for hate mongering. Looks like we may get to the point where its video games...but those are probably a bit too popular to make it all the way to the hate list. Only time will tell.

As a total side note, have you ever done a google image search for PETA? I did once and was utterly astounded by the sheer volume of relevent search results that included pictures of naked women. Guess some of the leadership there really does know how to get attention...that or the whole thing is just run by a perv.

That doesn't make it right. I'm pretty sure you're joking, and if so that's okay. The problem isn't the people who joke. The problem is the people who think stuff like that, and are serious, and then act on those thoughts.

I remember making fun of emos in high school as well. "Awww, rich little white suburbanite kid thinks life is too sad for him?" The central theme of emos is hilarious.

And who doesn't still make fun of hippies? Bunch of smelly old gezzahs. But they're adorable and just want to share their pot with you.

Just a question, how the hell are you supposed to stop someone being deppressed, bar lots of anti depressents? if Emos want to kill themselves let them, if they hate life/themselves that much then atleast they won't be constantly complaining about it to non-emos if they aren't around any more.

(Please note, this is said slightly tounge in cheek, I have some 'emo' friends and they aren't that bad)
