Desert bases are simple for Orks.

1. Get a bag of sand of variable sized sand and some epoxy glue. (better than elmers IMHO)

2. Mix the epoxy, just a little bit

3. Use a toothpick to glob the epoxy onto the base and spread it around.

4. Dunk it in sand (I usually let them sit until the epoxy dries some.

5. Wipe off the overflow and any bits on your ork

6. Paint snakebite leather

7. Drybrush the sand bone

Ta-da!

The other option is 'battlefield' terrain which can be done with the same sand technique but with some battlefield bitz like weapons, oilcans and junk. Then paint it greyish.

Desert Sand is the quick and easy basing for orks though.

Part of the under-construction fluff of my waaaaagh is they are on a planet where it is constantly raining (mud planet FTW) and as a result all the bases are mud-based (though my only painted & assembled killa kan isn't weathered as the base was kind of afterthought in the wake of 5th ed)
anyway my basing technique:

  • glue any desired terrain onto base (in my killa kan's case, a bit of trashed fencing made from sprue and wire mesh)

  • paint PVA glue onto base, (leaving some patches 'dry' - optional)

  • dip in GW's modelling sand

  • wait until PVA is dry (good time for sandwich and tea)

  • paint terrain

  • paint scorched brown onto base, blend it into terrain

  • drybrush base 2:1 snakebite leather:scorched brown

  • paint sand-less patches scorched brown, then cover with a layer of PVA glue (makes excellent puddles)
