Idea is to make a hologram of a city, where the various leaders are making their battle plan. I gave this a go last night and I'm looking for opinions. I like the general idea but the blue/white doesn't seem to look 'hologram' enough for me. Any ideas?

Doesn't look holographic at all, really. You could try that crazy melting/recasting stuff with the green transparent necron bits - if you suceeded it'd look pretty good, I reckon.

It looks too much actual ruble to me. I really like the idea but think maybe a greens would do the job.
Like the articles in white dwarf, when written as though actual Imperial info it's all green on black.
Work up from dark green to white then apply a green ink over the whole thing to tie in the colours and reduce the white to very bright green.

Nice job and good luck.

I'm in agreement, it looks like they are staring at blue models.

Another thought I had was this; the blue/green colored plastic found in binders:

Cut the semi-transparent plastic into the shape of buildings...?

Maybe you could try using what you've made to create a mold, then cast it in that water effects stuff or clear resin, with some breen ink added to make it translucent. That would work, as the holograms in the Star Wars movies always have a sort of ghostly, see-through look to them.

You could also paint it up in the green technique they use for spirit hosts/army of the dead

Well basically two choices then;

Paint it green/ghostly per previous suggestions
Cast it clear resin then perhaps a light green glaze

I'm leaning towards dropping the money for the clear resin, as even with the best possible green/ghost paintjob it will look flat.

He's bored cos he hasn't got to shout 'n point in the last five minutes.

The clear resin plan is awesome. Got to learn how to do that sort of thing myself one day.

One thing to consider, to give it a little more "life": Epic models in the hologram. Either as actual recreations of the models, or as unit indicators. I know a guy locally who did it for a Tau Command center and it looks ace.

Many a Sentinel pilot has hesitated to call his vehicle a walking coffin after battling beside a Dreadnought.

A few things I think would help:

Put the display on a base/table with a bunch of tubes and wires running up to it.

Do some source lighting so it looks like parts of the display are glowing.

Add a control panel.

Add some markings on the "map".

I think you're well on your way to a great piece!

Don't drybrush grey/blue over black. It'll just look like rubble.

You're going to need to paint bold, solid colors then highlight them.

The base/floor of the model shouldn't have any rubble at all. It should be smooth. Solid black would work.

You could also try making the buildings out of tinted, transparent plastic (like Necron rods)

Or you could just paint them blue/green and do some highlights.

Excellent idea.

Maybe some inks?

Or you could search for the Army of the Dead from LotR. They have some interesting, ghostly paint schemes that might work.

And once more, I praise your geniousness. Five * for concept.

And a High Five for all the great tips and ideas in this thread.

I might start one of these as a decent Objective for 5th/Apoc.

Cheers

I don't even KNOW anymore.

Basecoat the display white, then give it a green/blue whatever wash.
