Okay guys so I used to play a game called Counter Strike and I bought a Ventrilo server for my Clan but now that I no longer play that game my vent server is useless seeing as how no one is ever in it so I think it might be fun to use it for discussing WH related things and Dakka related things. I wanted some opinions about this before I do it and also suggestions but most of all wanted to know if people would actually use it so here I am wanting to hear everything people have to say about this.

Thanks
-Funk

I think it's a fine idea, but I would be unlikely to make use of it myself.

Er, what are you asking-is this a techno query?

-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG
-"Don't mind Frazzled. He's just Dakka's crazy old dude locked in the attic. He's harmless. Mostly."

I think I would like to get on vent and scope it out if we get some people on there. It's a lot easier to have people talk you through things than be snarky bastards on the internets. Break down one of those social barriers for a lot of people around here.

I could see some discussions just turning into a bunch of people bawwing about nonsensical crap.

Once upon a time, I told myself it's better to be smart than lucky. Every day, the world proves me wrong a little more.

You can post it here, sure, but it won't be official. As voice doesn't have the permanence of a message board, I doubt it'll see much traffic.

I'm a lawyer/banker/superhero. When I hear vent its when someone closes the office door and tells me about their latest intereaction with a client/management

For the uninitiated he's basically asking "does dakka want voice chat?".

Dakka Discussions for now. We may end up moving it to Off-Topic, as it's not really Warhammer 40k related.

We're more apt to take you seriously if you include proper punctuation in your posts.

That is like saying you get exercise because you occasionally walk across the room to get a Mountain Dew. If you want to keep your writing and communication skills sharp you need to be on guard at all times. You won't even realize that they are slipping until it's to late.

You'd be surprised at how different the reactions are to posts when they look like you care and not just scribbled it out in crayon without a second thought.

Trust me I noticed that in like 5th grade thanks to Aim but over a few years I fixed it, then again that was my spelling.

Grammar nazi-ing aside, I have a 50-person Vent server for my WoW guild (plus Eve Online and Anarchy Online players). I have several other vent servers in my list as well. One more wouldn't hurt. I'm not sure how much I'd actually utilize it, if at all, but who knows, right?

I appreciate your making the offer.

I am quite happy with the forum format. If I want to chat about games I will get on the phone or visit a friend.

One thing about Dakka is we have a worldwide membership so live chat is not so easy due to timezone differences.

It might help if you did mention that "vent" is short for Ventrilo, which is the official name of the program. Ventrilo, for those not in the know is a Voice over IP (VoIP) group communications software. It basically allows you to "talk" via the internet.

http://www.ventrilo.com/ that is the link to the program if you care to take a look. Most MMORPG'ers out there will recognize it.

Teamspeak is another software program that does the same thing.

I don't see. " Hell no, this is going to start the flames to a whole nother house!" choice in the poll.

So instead of conversations based on threads, we can have open mike night at the apollo.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Excellent, please do.

That aside, I've found that most voice chat applications tend to end up degenerating very quickly into a bunch of people going on about things I don't care about. Not to say that this is going to be the fate of anything you try to set up here, but it does tend to be a trend. That being said, I might pop in once and see how things go. If it does turn out like that, then I won't come back. If it stays on topic and people are well behaved then I'll make some return trips.
