The Right Amount of Troop Units

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is just about the right amount of troop selections for an army in these point levels? What I am about to say is just theory; however, I need the input of more veteran players as to how to build my Ard Boyz list as far as the number of troop selections necessary to win and achieve mission objectives?

I am trying to determine what would be the right number at certain point levels to be a competive and functioning army that could accomplish missions objectives and win the game.......

1,500 point army list (I believe three troop choices from the force organization choices)

1,850 point army list (I believe three could do well here as well)

2,000 point army list (I believe four troop choices are in order from the force organization choices)

2,500 Ard Boy army list (I believe five or six are needed to be competent and functionable from the force organization choices)

I am alway working on specific types of troop choices necessary to win and accomplish mission objectives on the battlefield.

Example would be the selection of the following:
1 to 2 mobile troop selections to ensure that the objectives are captured (ex: rhino transported marine squad, eldar jetbikes, fire warrior in devilfish)

1 to 2 hardcore troop selections to defend or hold objectives, plus support elites in taking the enemy's objectives (pathfinders, tactical squad with heavy weapon and special weapon loadout, ork boyz in truck)

1 to 2 general purpose troop selections that take on a take on all missions approach (ork boyz large mob, dire avengers, deamons)

the amount of troops you need varies considerably from army to army, and even that varies from the amount of troops that you will want.

Tau for example, want as few troop choices as possible, because their troops are sub-par, so they probably wouldnt go for more than 2 or 3

CSM on the other hand have a lot of good troop choices so will probably have four or more.

it also depends on the type of army you are playing.

KoS orks tend to have more scoring units than horde orks, because they have many smaller units. this isnt necessarily indicitive of all Mech armies however. Mech tau and mech eldar tend to have fewer because their transports cost so much.

really the whole thing is relative. more important that a definite, all encompassing pattern, is finding what balance works for you. my 2.5K chaos army has 6 troop choices in it, but that is only because of the army build that im playing. if your a good enough player, with a good enough list, you can get around having to have so many troops. remember you will win if you only hold one more objective than your opponent (although tournies with 'soft' scores will change this somewhat). again it is a balancing act, and depends what army you play, how you like to play and how your army is built. a lot of this understanding can only come through experiance.

taking up the mission

If we were to play each other in a tournament, not only would I table you, I would murder you, your family, every woman you ever loved and burn down your house. I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live?
