CNN wrote:"This week, John talked about the judgment required to be Commander in Chief. He's right: nothing is more important than judgment. But time and again, on the most critical national security issues of our time, John McCain's judgment was wrong," Biden will say according to excerpts of the speech released by the campaign
CNN ADVANCE EXCERPTS OF JOE BIDEN'S NATIONAL SECURITY SPEECH wrote:
9/24/08
"Later this week, Barack Obama and John McCain will come together to debate a president's most important responsibility: how to keep Americans safe and America secure. It will be their first presidential debate - but in many ways it's a debate we've been having as a nation for the past eight years. And the outcome of that debate has already been decided. Now, just as most Americans believe we are on the wrong track at home, so too have they come to the conclusion that we've been heading in the wrong direction abroad."
"Our country is less secure and more isolated than it has been at any time in recent history. This administration has dug America into a very deep hole around the world at a time our leadership is needed to meet the challenges of the 21st century. A central question for this election is which candidate will keep digging that hole.and which candidate will dig us out of that hole - indeed which candidate has the judgment and the vision to renew the promise of America in the world. It won't surprise you who I believe that candidate is: Barack Obama. But it is equally clear who that candidate is not: John McCain."
". the policies he would pursue as president would be wrong for America - nowhere more so than with our security and standing in the world."
"This week, John talked about the judgment required to be Commander in Chief. He's right: nothing is more important than judgment. But time and again, on the most critical national security issues of our time, John McCain's judgment was wrong. Right after the terrorists attacked us on 9-11, John responded by urging that we consider attacking countries other than Afghanistan, including Iraq, Iran and Syria. In the run up to the war in Iraq, John insisted that we would be greeted as liberators. that we didn't need a lot of troops. that victory was imminent. Then, he said he wasn't worried about Afghanistan. that we would "muddle through". and he declared Afghanistan to be "a remarkable success. In John's judgment, there is nothing to talk about with Tehran. And he has one idea for dealing with Russia: kick it out of the Group of Eight nations.
"In John's judgment, it is not the federal government's responsibility to protect us here at home. He voted again and again against fully funding cops and firefighters. against interoperable communications so that our first responders can talk to each other. against screening more cargo on planes and ships. against better security for our tunnels, trains, ports and chemical plants. It is John's judgment that six years into the war in Iraq, we should keep spending $10 billion a month. indefinitely. at a time Iraq is running an $80 billion surplus.
"And John McCain continues to insist, against all the evidence and all the facts, that Iraq is the central front in the war on terrorism. and not the mountains between Afghanistan and Pakistan where the people who actually attacked us on 9-11 reside and are regrouping.
"John is more than wrong — he is dangerously wrong. On a question so basic, so fundamental, so critical to our nation's security, we can't afford a Commander-in Chief so divorced from reality and from America's most basic national interests."
"Time and again, Barack Obama has demonstrated the judgment we need in our next president. and the vision to see over the horizon."
"Seven years ago, Barack Obama opposed one of the most disastrous decisions in the history of American foreign policy: the diversion of our military might, our resources and focus from Afghanistan to Iraq. He was profoundly right. Now, he is right again: Barack Obama will end the war in Iraq responsibly. He will be as careful getting out as George Bush and John McCain were careless getting in. He knows we should not keep spending $10 billion a month indefinitely while the Iraqis are running a $79 billion surplus - which is why he will start to shift responsibility to the Iraqis.bring our combat brigades home over a period of 16 months. lead a diplomatic surge with the world's great powers and Iraq's neighbors to press for a political power sharing agreement. and keep a residual force in Iraq to destroy any remaining terrorists, train Iraqis and protect our personnel."
"Barack Obama understands what John McCain does not: the next President must be more than the Commander-in-Chief for Iraq. He must be Commander-in-Chief for America's security around the world."
"Mark my words: if, God forbid, there is another major attack on America, it will not come from Iraq. It will almost certainly come from the Afghanistan-Pakistan border - where the Bush/McCain approach let down our guard and let our enemies off the hook."
And unlike John McCain - who opposed Barack Obama's call to take out the high-level terrorist targets in Pakistan and called it "bombing our ally" - we will not tolerate a terrorist sanctuary in Pakistan. If Pakistan cannot or will not act, we will take out high-level terrorist targets like bin Laden if we have them in our sights."
"Barack Obama has been clear: no country poses a greater security challenge to the United States, Israel and our allies than Iran. Under the policies George Bush has pursued and John McCain would continue, Iran, not freedom, has been on the march. Iran is much closer to the bomb; its influence in Iraq is expanding; its terrorist proxy Hezbollah is ascendant in Lebanon; its ally, Hamas controls Gaza and launches rockets at Israel. Beyond bluster, what would John McCain actually do about these dangers? He doesn't say."
"The worst nightmare for a regime that thrives on isolation and tension is an America ready, willing and able to engage. Since when has talking removed the word "no" from our vocabulary? It's amazing how little faith John McCain has in himself and in America."
So ask yourself: based on the judgments they have made and the policies they have proposed, which candidate is more likely as president to end the war in Iraq responsibly. to focus America's full might on Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan. to unite our allies in dealing effectively with Iran and Russia.to renew the promise of America in the world? The answer is clear.
"There's a short list of the forces shaping the 21st Century. No one country can control these forces, but more than any other country, we have an ability to affect them - if we use the totality of our strength. That means maintaining the finest fighting force in the world - not pushing it to the breaking point. rebuilding our alliances, partnerships and international institutions - not disparaging them. strengthening our diplomacy — not disdaining it. and using our economic might, not putting it in jeopardy.
Barack Obama understands that strength and wisdom go hand in hand. that the power of our example is as important and the example of our power. and that its only leadership when others join us in the struggle for freedom, security, prosperity, and progress. Barack Obama will keep our citizens safe. He will keep our country secure. And he will answer the yearning, at home and around the world, for an American foreign policy that is once again as good and strong as the American people."

Yup. That was a pretty dumb slip. Would you like me to post a couple of videos of McCain saying dumber things, or do you have any comments on the substance of the speech?
Any disagreement with the text excerpted?

Pretty good. I personally believe that he exagerates the threat of Iran. There a multitude of ways to offset their rising influence. Pressuring EU to admit Turkey would be a good start. Helping Livni settle that Israel/Palestine matter through something like a two-state agreement would also do alot of good. Especially if we could get the UN to oversee the transfer of authority, or doing it ourselves if necessary. A tri-partied solution to Iraq would also be very effective as it would essentially place Iranian interests between the rock of Saudi Arabia and the hard place of a new Kurdistan; though I hold no illusion of something like that ever taking place.

Yes (to Ragnar's last question). McCain is fundamentally correct that the core militants (the majority) of the terrorist groups working against western interests are in Iraq now, committing terrorists acts against those citizens.
We need to be addressing both fronts. A pullout from Iraq will be seen as a huge victory and rallying point for the cause in the middle east. They are working very hard to ensure our failure there. Not by targeting us, but by targeting Iraqi civilians and security infrastructure.
Biden is wrong about that. He is nearly right about Iran, though. I agree with dogma that he overestimates that threat. Iran is mostly hot air. Their citizenry are not in line at all with a military conflict with anyone, much less the western countries. It's an easy win to push for meetings there.
But after years of seeing Dems decry Bush using the threat of terrorist attacks to generate fear, trying to push votes his way...it's nice to see Biden do the exact same thing.

Not necessary I just like Biden's gaffs. Makes him more human. Did I mention I liked Biden as an actual P candidate before he got stomped by Clinton/Obama?
Here let me help:

The US could help a lot in the Middle East by easing off with the chronic interference....
Example? Palestine hold free, fair and legitamate democratic elections. Hamas come to power. The US refuses to recognise it.... Bit like North Vietnam, when it democratically elected a Communist Government.
The world can police itself. The US does not need to keep sticking it's beak in where it doesn't belong. Sorry if it sounds rude, but it's true. And most importantly, why *shouldn't* Iran have Nuclear weapons? Or is the ability to destroy our species purely saved for the self appointed 'Good Guy's'?

Well the main reason that the US should stop policing the world is to goad the EU to get off its ass and look after its own world interests. Isolationism, and eurocentrism, will be the death of that institution.

No. It is purely for the rational actors. Iran is not a rational actor (nor is North Korea). China is not a good guy, and it is OK that they have nukes. They are a rational actor. Same with Russia.
That may be unfair, but life is unfair. Those are the breaks.

Who is to say they aren't rational though? We only have our media and politicians words for that, and frankly, I don't trust either of them. At all.
And not being rude to yourself, but Russia and China? Well, I suppose someone being the same size as you takes all the fun out of Bullying....
Russia and China were able to turn round to the West and say 'What are you going to do about it like?' hence why they were suddenly declared rational.
And Foreign Policy....how about that Missile Shield covering the Nations you so desperately want to make themselves Nuclear Targets by playing host to listening stations? Britain is, and we're not being covered by it.

Nations with nukes. Are you saying they are rational?
A rational actor works with his own self-interest at heart. He has a fear of mortality. A nation run by religion does not possess that. I know that will lead to jibes about Bush and neo-cons, but even the current US is hardly led in any direction by religion (unless you consider money religion).

You have nukes. Whats thwe problem.
Note no one is freaking about India having the bomb, and only freak about Pakistan because its not a stable government. No one freaks about UK or France. Its the fact that Iran keeps talking about wiping out Israel that everyone's freaking.
Note the latest news-the EU is saying Iran may get the bomb.
Anyone ever consider this statement:
It shall be US Public policy that, any attack on the US by biological, nuclear (including "dirty bomb") and chemical means will be considered as to have come or been aided by Iran. Further, the United States will utilize its nuclear arsenal in response to any attack of this nature, as the first and immediate response.
How about that? Thats the MAD theory thatb we currently have with both the Russians and China.

The difference being that the Iranians are governed by a religion which advocates the coming of the apocalypse as means of weeding out the non-believers. That's where the fear comes from.
It seems unfounded though. For all its seemingly irrational press Iran has acted well within the expected limits of detente in the ME. If they were really irrational we would have already been seeing major chemical strikes on Israeli population centers.

Iran is full of rational, well-meaning, moral citizens. Iranians are a great people. I mean that. Time is on our side with respect to Iran.
But they aren't the leaders. There is a strong disconnect between the two, as there is in North Korea as well.

That's an assumption. Iranian rhetoric might portray extremism, but that is meant for the populace. If it weren't the behavior of the state would be vastly different. Keep in mind that the Iranian President doesn't run the country, the Supreme Leader does. Ahmadinejad has very little real power, and absolutely none over the military.

Attacking the US does not necessarily make a state extremist. One of the great successes of the Bush administration was to convince much of the public that only irrational people would engage in terrorism or assymetric warfare. No, funding proxy entities to further your interest around the world is a well established means of pursuing an agenda. The US did it for many year during the Cold War, particularly under Nixon. Hell, we did it with the Iraqis and the Iranians during the Iran-Iraq war. Not to mentiona mujahadeen in Afghanistan.

He's made a few statements, but nothing like what you are postulating, MDG. He still had to go to Congress and let John Kerry and Hillary Clinton give him the authority.
If you are literally equating Iran and the US, then one of us is myopic to the point of no return.

But the war is legal. I won't argue whether it is just. That's a fallacy. There is NO just war.
How is the war illegal? What defines the legality of the war? Whether the majority likes it? Whether a majority of countries do?
The US government voted on the war, and the vote passed. Therefore, wrt to US law, the war is legal.

Evidently we should not have declared war on Germany, Italy, and Japan in WWII then. We were definitely after regime change. Kosovo and Afghanistan were similar.
By that standard all wars are illegal. What are you one of those "peace on earth and good will towards men" Jesus freak types?

The UN and Geneva Convention followed WW2. One was a ressurected League of Nations, and the other was an attempt to prevent future atrocities.
Afghanistan, Kosovo, Japan, Germany etc were all very different to Iraq. Japan and Germany were threats to the Sovereignty of the countries they attacked. Essentially, this is a case of 'They Started It'.
Afghanistan was an attempt to bring Terrorists to justice. That the Taleban collapsed was a bonus.
Kosovo....UN was largely a peacekeeping force trying to stop the various factions slaughtering each other.

Geneva convention was prior to WWII. Haven't you watched any black and white films with ze Nazis?
You're obviscating because you're more supportive of the other wars. They had regime change as key components, therefore illegal under your definition.

Not my definition though.
Germany's War effort would be deemed illegal, but The Allies, who wear fighting to preserve their own Countries were not.
