I'm not au fait with most codices, so forgive me if this exists already.
In the RPG Shadowrun, you could get 'intelligent' weapons that froze the trigger when the sight detected friendly figures, allowing you to shoot with more confidence into melees.
Could a similar idea work in WH40k?
Say 50 pts per squad (or 10 per character). Shoots into combat: If hits, then hit as normal. If rolls a one then rolls two dice and if this rolls a double that causes a wound on one of your own.
Workable?

I could see it being an upgrade for Tau; higher tech, and would much rather shoot than punch. I don't see it being less than a battlesuit system, though.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

I think that this should be reserved to units that are distinctly shooty such as battle suits, and snipers.
But then you'd have to reduce the vindicare by about 20 points so...

Have you read the Eisenhorn trilogy? Kasrkin hellguns were equipped with gene sniffers that would lock out if they were pointed at anyone whose signature was coded into the 'don't shoot me' database. It actually prevented shots into close melee when the weapons locked out because the target and the inquisitor were too close together.
So... fluff-wise, it'd do exactly the opposite of what you're suggesting.

I say we should just allow shooting into close combat and set up a simple 50/50 rule to see who you hit. I charge a squad of Conscripts into a squad of nobs, then I unload into that squad and cut everyone down. With the Imperial mindset, it should totally be a rule.

Fun idea, and it works in Warmachine. With the proper balance, I'd like it in 40k.

But then again Warmachine lets you deliberately attack your own models if you choose.
It might be interesting to just declare that hits are worked out based on the ratio of each side, but I'm not sure how you'd work both the ratio of each side and the firer's ballistic skill into something like that. It's hard to do it without penalizing high BS models..
I think 'on a 1, you hit your own models' without any other rolling would be a good start, though.
