Well i stopped playing GW games about 3 years ago now, but was looking to maybe getting back into playing again or atleast painting and converting as this was what i was really into. However i am stuck on what to do for an army theme.

Im looking at playing both 40k and fantasy but not LOTR.

I was wondering if anyone could give me any hints on where to get inspiration i was thinking i could read some of the GW novels i have not read but i am a student and money is low.

Cheers for any help.

If I ever want inspiration I go down to my FLGS and look at stuff. Never fails. Or, if it's too late, I look at people's projects on here.

I like the look of the new Nids plastic big models, and its one of the few armies i never did. Trouble is i do not like the base squad models.

Go for a monstrous and Gargantuan creature army. Get enough Carnifexes that it's apocalypse, and then throw in hierophants and stuff. I think Malanthropes and Harridans are pretty much the coolest things out there.

I'm actualy in the same boat as you Steedy, I was out for all of 4th edition, about 3-5 years now and have just recently jumped back in. The new marine Codex has lots of nice Fluff in it, and tons for books written around its different Chapters. Check out the page of Chapters with a little insert that talks about the chapters shown, that got me in. So many playing styles from one army...
It is also the cheapest to build right now, next to maybe Nurgle Marines. The Black Reach box is a great way to restart an army, the figures aren't half bad either. I am half way to completing my new Space Marine army, based on the ever separated Nova Marines. 3 black reach boxes going in half and half with someone who wanted the Orks has gotten me 3 dreads, 15 terminators and 30 marines, not bad for 90 bucks.
but just go back and thumb through some Codex's and I'm sure the fluff will catch your eye, and the chance to model again will be great.

It's odd saying this but play an hour or two of one of the dawn of war games. Cool looking units, doing cool looking things, without the need for assembly and painting. You even get to color your own force. Otherwise popular culture can give inspiration, starship troopers will make you want to play tyranids and guard after the first twenty minutes.

I don't have the link here at work, but you could always visit the "Works In Progress" (W.I.P.) website.
ALWAYS cool projects going on there for all the armies.

Any idea what forces you're leaning towards, or what's "right out?"

Hmm that site sounds good, think you could put a link up when you get home and i will check it out.

As for What force to play i have had some ideas but its still abit of a throw up between some.

Would it be veasable idea to convert the Eldar models into a dark eldar army?

Winter assault is ok, but don't buy it alone. Dark crusade is really the best expansion DoW has, Soulstorm was a buggy and poorly designed and written disappointment. You can get them all in a single pack though, so thats probably the best option.

Just so y'all know, Soulstorm is about to get its first patch, written by Relic (obviously, given that Ironlore doesn't exist any more), and it's set to fix a lot of the obvious bugs.

They certainly waited a while... The bugs weren't really the biggest issue with the game though. The poorly implemented flying units, samey and overlong campaign, and downright bad texture work were the cripplers. The bugs were just annoying.

Drop back on Skirmish action. Thats whats doing it for me. start with a couple of whatever you had, and get one or two of something else and let them decide for you.
Low pressure, and its a nice change to buy a couple of models at a time and not worry too much.
I'm getting into fantasy with Mordhiem, after going thorugh some house cleaning and finding pretty much four or five warbands unmessed and waiting to be defiled.
Went back on the web and theres plenty of other settings if a crater infested city of the damned doesn't fit the bill.

Necromunda is good for 40k, if you have the patience to play a little loose with the rules and go old school. The orks are good for squad on squad stuff, then you can add the loosers to the winners and eventually end up with a mob or two, then you can go the extra mile and aqire a few vehicles. then you need the mech to fix them, then one gets to be the boss, so you need a couple of Nobs, then...;
eventually you have an army.

Warbands... its better then trying to get too much of something you won't get into. Then if you don't find that you want to stay with them, you can drop them on your pals for a few bucks.

You mean like the Marauder Hover-Bomber, or the Lightning Hover-Fighter? Or perhaps the Ork Fighta-Hovvah-Bomba, or maybe even the Tau Barahover? I personally like it how the Marauder's boming run makes it swoop in, deliver its cargo, and then just stop dead once done. Some pretty darn amazing air-breaks on that thing.

I played Soulstorm for a very short space of time, but not because of the Faux-Aircraft, but because the damned thing overheated my 3D card and caused my computer to lock up. I've never had a game do that, and Soulstorm wasn't exactly cutting edge when it came out. Talk about bad coding.

Having recently obtained a few FW Chaos Dreads, I can say that, unlike a lot of FW's products, the Dreads are actually quite nice. They go together well, there was virtually no warping or miscasts to speak of. A few bends in the really thin weapons, like the Inferno Cannon and TL-Autocannon, but nothing that 30 seconds under hot water and some patience can't fix. Compared to some of the other things I've bought from them (Manticores... the God-damned Stormblade that I nearly through against a wall), they're great kits.

That all depends on what you like. I noticed NONE of these things while playing Soulstorm. I think this expansion was damn near perfect as far as expansions go. Videogames often suffer from a similar problem as GW codexes: The next one HAS to be bigger better and, to the player's detriment, harder. I think the fact that SS took what was popular in DC and reused it is a good one. It's not often that I can play through 3 expansions of a game and still be able to complete them. It just seem that the skills needed are always being increased, often beyond my abilities to adapt. IMO SS is a great expansion, especially you're actually LOOKING for more of the same with a new presentation.
