Right, last night, as well as being my 4th game this year, was my Savage Orcs 3rd outing.
So far, they have stomped Stunties, been given a solid slap by Chaos, and the latest result? Showing a bunch of Slaaneshi Daemons that not everything is in fact pleasurable!
And I am now more hooked on Fantasy than I have been in a long time. I don't know which is the largest contributing factors, but I get to pick from 1) a shiny new army, which is almost fully painted, and my best work to date 2) *very* good opponents (not just in terms of skill. They are great guys to play against) 3) Rejigging my work hours slightly to allow me to game 4) Lovely new books I'm not that familiar with and 5) figuring out just how ridiculously 'ard Savage Orc Big'uns can be.
Seriously, I've always enjoyed Fantasy, but only recently has the game itself been reminding me why I like it. The new books are fantastic fun to play against (the main reason Chaos got a massacre was table quarters. I *never* remember about them!) and every army is a genuinely different challenge. The Daemons, for example, had me worried at first with the sheer amount of Magic (2
Lvl 1 Slaanesh Heralds, 1
Lvl 2 Tzeentch Herald, 10 Horrors and a
Lvl 2 Daemon Prince using Death Magic) and yet, I learnt something about them. Sure, they tend to hit like a tonne of bricks, but they crumple like a Paper Bag. Highlight of the game was the Big'uns chinning the Flesh Hounds and wiping them out in a single turn, overrunning away from the rest of the battle, and then being rear charged by 2 Fiends of Slaanesh. *then* braying the Fiends convincingly (he didn't kill a single Boy!) and legging it back toward combat from the compulsory Overrun! Lowlight? Calling the Waaagh! and losing 3 of my 5 Boarboy Big'uns because of it
The Stunties were fun as well. And once again, my Big'uns made a horrific mess of *everything* the mentalists laid their grubby little mitts on! Slight jamminess allowed me to see off a full unit of Warriors with
BSB Thane and Runesmith with 5 (count'em! FIVE!) Savage Orc Boyz on a flank charge. And, again, the poor old Boar Boyz Big'uns got slapped around before they could do owt!
Chaos? Dan learnt the hard way Regeneration does not prevent Killing Blow (choppy choppy!) and soon after found avoiding the Big'un Boyz a very, *very* good idea. Having said that, he used his hounds very well to pull me into odd positions. And yet, this still taught me not to worry too much about Flank Charges, as T4, the Ward and the bucket of attacks my Boyz get can usually see off anything but other ranked units. And yep, once again, the Big'Un Boarboyz did precisely nowt, other than get their heads kicked in by Chaos Knights!
And I am loving it! I really, really hope I get the chance to see the mess the Boarboy Big'uns can make, but somehow, knowing how terrified people are of their foot slogging mates, I really rather doubt it. Still. One day. One day they will hit home, and get to use their nice Magic Banner!
So how about you guys? Do you have a second wind of Warhammer?
And just to blow my own Trumpet...so far my rather unsubtle tactic for the Warboss of 'See enemy General, make a Beeline for him' is working beautifully so far. In three games, so far he has knacked a Dwarf Lord (first round. Shame about the rest of the game....) a Khorne Lord on Juggernaught (two killing blows in a challenge. Squelch!) 5 Chaos Knights, a Herald of Slaanesh, and 15 or so Daemonettes. Can't wait to aim the nutcase at a Vampire Lord. Should be a good, if disappointingly brief pagga. Shaga's Screamin' Sword with Iron Gob for the win!
