Wow, that'a pretty danged good, especially since it includes the free month of play in there as well.
This coincides with Blizzards release of that Liche King expansion... Hmm.

Not entirely surprising, since you put it that way.
And of course, if I want to chin Nagash, I'll play Warhammer, rather than a fairly weak rip off. That, and I despise Gnomes and their stupid Robotic Chickens. I mean, who thought they were good ideas?

Shut your noise you!
Sauron isn't Nagash. And Nagash didn't make a ring..erm...other than possibly the Carstein Ring.

Too funny! And True!
Never been into MMORPG's but I've heard good things about both Warhammer Online & WoW. If I ever get laid off (not likely but you never know) I'll be sure to pick one up for the couple months of free time I'd have.

It is best not to go there, since Tolkien stole most of his stuff from others too.

Who was the template for Sauron then? I bet he's not as close as Nagash is to Sauron.

I think its best if we dont go there m8
Tolkien was madly in love with ancient languages and old folklore..now i havn't read what he had so i cant tell you who was the template
for Sauron and i doubt theres only one source for him.
So yeah dont go there

So nobody knows then. It would therefore be acceptable for me to say that Tolkien's characters are all original concepts he invented himself. Oops, I appear to have gone there.

Yes you are correct Tolkien made everything in fantasy including:
- hobbits ( Halfling rip-offs whose possible origin for the word derives from the Scots word hauflin. Or as some say Tolkien's very own inverted gnomes, since personalities are the same as are most of their traits accept the old wrinkly look.)
- gnomes ( Paracelsus includes gnomes in his list of elementals, as earth elementals back in ancient greek times.)
- elves ( Germanic mythical creatures. From the Old Norse ælf or álfr.)
- dwarves (Again from Germanic mythical creatures possibly brought on by misunderstanding of the dwarfism disease in ancient times.)
The list goes on and on and on. As does the characterizations in the book. Most borrowed from these very same myths although the human archytpes are drawn from a widder source. What tolkien is credited for isn't coming up with all of these stories and ideas, but simply making them popular again and exposing them to a new generation of people on a wider scope. A huge merit on its own.

Seriously, between Gear 2 and L4D I don't know how I'm going to paint my Adepticon armies. Right now I'm finishing up Mass Effect so at least I can paint through all the freakin dialogue.

Nice strawman there pal. Once again I'm looking for characters Tolkein based heavily upon mythical characters as closely as Nagash is based upon Sauron and if you can a mythical origin for the Sauron character. Come on people it's not that hard I've thought of one already... no wait, two.

Sorry ahtman - Morgoth was based on Satan.
Sauron was one of Morgoth's lieutenants who escaped the destruction of Angband and then hung around like a bad smell for the next 6000 years....

He was called Melkor as one of the Ainur. When the 12 most powerful Ainur (of whom he was one) became the Valar and took up guardianship of Earth, he changed his name to Morgoth.

I have never been able to make it through the Silmarillion... not for a lack of trying... 4 times now. All the refference works I have read keep his name consistent as Melkor when referring to him. I'm not quite sure what it is about that book that I just can not get through it.

Don't worry - I'm one of those people that picks up LOTR at least once a year and reads it cover to cover - and I've only ever made it through the Silmarillion once. I had to tidy every other book in the house away to stop me from picking up something else until it was finished.
Now it keeps staring at me from the shelf and daring me to try again....
