WTH does "QQing" mean?

Mannahnin wrote:A lot of folks online (and in emails in other parts of life) use pretty mangled English. The idea is that it takes extra effort and time to write properly, and they’d rather save the time. If you can still be understood, what’s the harm? While most of the time a sloppy post CAN be understood, the use of proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling is generally seen as respectable and desirable on most forums. It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.

Crying.

Don't ask me how it came to mean that; I'd guess it's because the Q vaguely resembles a crying eye, but don't hold me to that.

First I heard it was in reference to MMOs: "Less QQ, more pew-pew!"

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;

Leetspeak is such a fascinating field. I'm torn between admiration of the variety of bizarre ways it has found to express itself with a keyboard, and horror at the linguistic retardation it has inflicted to our students.

I agree with Lord Sutekh. QQ usually means crying or sad in English language leetspeak. Depending on country of origin, translations may vary.

English doesn't borrow from other languages. It follows them down dark alleyways and mugs them for loose grammar.

These are actually both true. It's a reference to both, of a sorts, to QQ(where it got its name) and to the fact that QQ(the letters) resemble crying eyes. At least, that's what I've gotten from Urban Dictionary.

@waaagh_gonads: Not every culture uses "ha ha" for laughter. Quite a few other cultures use a "ke ke" sound for it.

It comes from South Korea where Starcraft is it's own industry and in online games they would use kekeke. The OMGZERGRUSH or lolzergrush came later.

This is so sad. I spent most of my time in public school either fighting or sleeping and I managed to passively absorb a sufficient command of my native language that I don't have to rely on insipid contractions. Here's hoping that Netspeak eventually goes the way of Esperanza.

L33tspeek and netspeak will never come into general communication because their purpose is to differentiate their users from the general population by means of exclusivity.

If only this were true. I have a little sister that does this, and so do her friends. They say "lawl(lol)" instead of or before laughing, "JK" instead of just kidding, WTF, well you know, and others. It's one of those situations where it starts out jokingly, and I warned her about it, and then moves on to doing it unconsciously as part of your normal speech pattern. They even use emoticons to describe their thoughts and feelings. Sadface. Smiley!

That means the uber-l33t will find different expressions for LOL and so on.

Many of these contractions precede the WWW.

I have no doubt it will evolve like any language. Still, seeing this in real life is disturbing, when not used as a comedic device.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

There would have to be a very good reason for society at large to accept a language that is deliberately difficult to understand. It often has some wit in it, but it's so old and overused that it'll probably just be a children's toy.

Then again, we all play Warhammer here.

I personally can't stand people saying 'loler'. That's the worst.

Concur. I was using these phrases on bulletin boards back in the 80s. When a good board had multiple lines and you usually only had a line to type your responses. If you waited or took too long, the post you were responding to had already scrolled off screen. There was no quote function, but a lot of current board html commands do mimic things we had back then.
