About a week ago the joint in my right great toe turned red and caused me anywhere from noticeable pain to pain bad enough to cause me to sweat while sitting still. I went to a doctor, and believe it or not, she said it was most likely gout. This surprised me, as I understood gout to be a disease of lifestyle, and I don't have many of the lifestyle factors I believed to be associated with that particular problem. It was bad luck I suppose.

Anyone else ever have this? I was given a list of food and drink that can supposedly trigger it. I'd be interested in hearing what works for other people, or at least what they do to keep comfortable during an episode, how frequently they have episodes, etc.

Dude that sucks!
Like a lot of things you can be genetically more or less suceptable to these conditions.
I hope it clears up quickly, and none of your favourite foods were on the list.
My grandad suffered from gout, but I'd say that was down to his love of stout and boiled eels.

I take care of invalid old people for a living, and I have to tell you Grignard gout is more an old people's disease. It usually comes from a combination of a sedentary lifestyle (which a lot of older population's lead) and certain foods. Would you mind describing your vitals (height, weight, temp, BP, Pulse, pain)? If you don't mind that is. Something else I've seen cause severe inflammation in the feet is diabetes but your description of it in your big toe hits the nail on the head.

Once upon a time, I told myself it's better to be smart than lucky. Every day, the world proves me wrong a little more.

Thats the thing, I'm right at 6ft tall, 179 pounds, normal BP and pulse, no pain except the toe. I had a reasonably active lifestyle, prior to this. In fact, now that it is clearing up, I'm going to make a point to get out as soon as I can. I imagine just sitting around will in the long run make it worse. Again, the only thing I can think of is a food and drink thing or just genetics. I did twist my ankle a bit just before this, but I don't think that is related.

You can be genetically predisposed to it, basically you metabolise the uric acid more poorly and it forms crystals in your joints.

If it is gout, it will come and go, get worse and go to more joints as it progresses. you will have to avoid certain foods and keep fit and will eventually end up on allopurinol and colchicine.

Yah, that is pretty much what I gathered. They didn't do the alopurinol this time, but just gave an NSAID called indocin, or something like that. The doc hasn't given me the diet list, but I pretty much know what she's going to say from what I've read. Same old story, less meat, more vegetables.
