-IG Tidbits
We've heard from some whispers on the wind that if you want to get a good feel for the upcoming IG codex, go back and watch some of the opening battle scenes from Enemy at the Gates. The updated IG range is also said to have a noticable lack of metal. There is word of plastic command squads.

Summer 09

-Dark Elves 2nd Wave
This is currently said to be a small selection of expanded Characters/Lords , and the possibility of other models.

-Empire 3rd Wave
Said to include a plastic Steam Tank and plastic Greatswords, and conflicting reports of another kit. These are said to be a further step on the path of getting the metal minis out of the Empire range.

~These two releases (Dark Elves and Empire) may be tied together in some way focussed on the mid-year, but there is nothing solid yet.

-Skaven
There is talk of the chittering of teeth and the stench of matted fur on the move in the deep parts of the Warhammer world. There is conflicting talk placing this Army Book at the tail end of summer.

~Standard caveats apply folks. We have heard nothing past summer except for the standard jockeying between Space Wolves and Necrons that have been making the rounds for months now.

Guard are re-confirmed to be early next year, so it's a good year as far as I'm concerned.

Though these multi-wave releases are kind of interesting. GW is getting much lighter in terms of rules releases than before. With 2 or even 3 releases per Codex / Army Book, it means that, by definition, second tier armies are going to go 2 editions between updates, and third tier (or lower) armies will wait 3 or more editions between updates.

With the overall rules stability, this makes solid business sense, despite not catering to the handful of non-profitable fans.

Plastic Greatswords and a plastic Steam Tank? Oh man, my fantasy army is getting a boost next year if that's true.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I like that not only the just released/updated armies get new models.

Are there any Armies in fantasy that direly need an update? I've got the feeling that the older armybooks fit nicely in the line of the 7th edition ones. So no "hurry" to update those.

Erm, "2nd wave" miniature releases don't take up a Codex release slot, if that's what you're saying.

IG like enemy at the gates? so a box will contain 3 guardsmen on their feet and 17 dead/wounded models then? lol
i can't wait to expand my IG army - just need a quick way of putting them together (seriously thinking about buying loads of the 5man squad sets) and painting the little blighters (or i could just stick with my tanks!)

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

One of which has a lasgun and the other two with the clips?

A Commissar led squad mowing down 'whole groups' of retreating men would be interesting. I mean why just shoot the officer when you can really make a point of just shooting everyone?

I hope that plastic cmd squad comes with a lot of special weapon options.. like hopefully 2 meltas and 2 plasma guns plus a demo charge or 2. So you can use the bitz from it to make special weapon guys for regular platoons and get rid of the metal ones. I wonder if it's supposed to be for a platoon cmd squad or a HQ command?

If they are really making the plastic cmd then I still say it would be nice to put out a platoon box set that comes with the plastic command plus enough men for 2-3 squads, including some heavy weapons.. for maybe like $70..? so it's a little cheaper than buying the boxes separately.

Now that would be unique... include rules for IG so that you can shoot anything... including into close combats (not that IG squads last more than one round of CC)

If I'm reading that question right, this is the follow-up release to the DE from a few months ago.

If you can keep your head, while all about you are losing their's, then you have probably completely misunderstood the situation!

Hah, when I read Dark Elves...my mind auto-translated that to DE which then went to Dark Eldar. If I wait much longer for that Dex, I'll develop an official syndrome.

Man that movie was crappy though. Stalingrad on the other hand We need more tanks that run over trenches, stop and grind it into ruin, burying the occupants while firing at people and blowing away their lower bodies. Maybe throw in tank desant rules while they're at it.

Erm, "2nd wave" miniature releases don't take up a Codex release slot, if that's what you're saying.

Exactly. Instead of releasing a Codex (which consumes rules development time and resources), GW simply releases more minis. That means that, over the 4-6 years for each game edition, there are fewer Codices / Army Books being released. If there are fewer Codex / Army Book releases, then any existing Codices / Army Books have to wait longer, on average, to be updated.

For example, for 40k, assume it gets 40% of the slots over a 5-year Edition cycle. Out of 60 potential slots, that means 40k gets only 24 slots to work with. Out of those 24 slots, at least 5 of them will be new Edition and Space Marines. That leaves 19 slots for other stuff. If you assume 2 slots per Army (initial release and Wave 2+), that's a maximum of other 9 armies getting updates. But we have more than 10 Armies in 40k. And some of those slots will go to things like Campaigns and such, so the actual Codex releases will be even less, perhaps only 7 or 8 Codices per edition. With over a dozen armies in 40k, that means, on average, roughly half of the armies will get updates each edition.

And some of the armies always get a Codex each edition:
- Spaz Marinz (HURR!!)
- Chaos Marines
- Eldar
- Imperial Guard

That leaves only around 4 slots for other stuff to be updated.

In a 5th Edition context, that translates into fixing the "problem" Codices: Necrons, Woofs, Inquisition, and the last slot probably goes to Tau or Necrons, as they sell reasonably well.

Then, GW can pick up Dark Eldar & Sisters in 6th Edition.

I think that all makes good sense.

I can see the new plastic IG Battleforces being built as as a foundation brick:
- 6-man Command Squad
- 6-man Heavy Weapons Squad
- 10-man Infantry Squad
- 10-man Infantry Squad
- 1 Chimera
- 1 Sentinel
That makes for 1 solid Platoon of stuff that is completely playable.

We do?

If GW turns IG into stalingrad, your IG will have grey uniforms because were in grim-dark

So lets hope for IG not focused at Guard vs traitor-guard. Would be fluffy, but also lacking in balance .....again.
