With times getting hard a lot of people are trying to become more self-sufficient, for example, planting kitchen gardens and keeping chickens like people did during the war.
I wonder if anyone on Dakka has started doing this.

My father grows things like beans, tomatoes, carrots and other veg.
He's done it for years though.

I live in an apartment so that isn't as much of an option for me. I've basically responded by consuming less stuff, rather than trying to do things like that myself.

We bought an SUV in late December.
I'm buying shares as per our long term plan (about $2500 per month) but are looking to ramp it up now they are so cheap and the market has stabilised.
Looking to add a pergola to the back of the house mid this year.
Need to finish the slats on 1 side of underneath the house... probably July.
Buying a new $2000 laptop in July.
Food and petrol prices have crashed in the last 3-4 months so am eating more and drive the car more.
So no, we aren't cutting back.

I'm living green but not from any idealism. My standard of living has fallen quite a bit in the past two years. I'm reusing things because I want to spend money on things I want, not on things I need to live. I try to create less trash because I haven't the time to spare cleaning up after myself when I can just not create waste in the first place. I'm convinced the environmentalists will get what they want not because anyone actually wants to live like they say, but we'll all eventually just have to, at least part of the time.

The smart environmentalists have been arguing for sustainable living in terms of economics for some time now.
My living expenses are pretty much non-existent. I live at my parent's house because it just doesn't make much sense for me to get my own place right now. They own the place outright, so the only things I need to contribute to are the grocery bill, and the beer/scotch fund. I also pay for my gym membership, but that's relatively cheap. I suppose my only real sacrifice has been going to the library instead of simply buying books. There was a while there that I couldn't walk out of a good bookstore (Seminary Bookstore at U Chicago is fantastic) without dropping at least $100.

Yeah. The Stern Review from the UK argued that the cost of controlling C02 emissions now was a fraction of the cost of the impact of climate change down the line. While there's environmental nutters out there, most folk are just looking at small changes now to avoid being forced into big changes down the line.
Anyhoo, for myself I've found my mortgage has gotten cheaper, and my job is fairly secure. It means my plans of moving to the UK to work and travel is now a lot less practical, but it probably wasn't very practical anyway. I'm luckier than most, I guess.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

So no-one is keeping chickens?
I am seriously thinking about keeping chickens for a supply of free fresh eggs.

Do we get medical coverage ?
I've noticed the discount section of the supermarket is busier, and a few people I know are walking or busing rather than driving.
Had some friends growing their own crops, but with the reclassification from C to B I think we'll have to get rid of this pretty sharpish.

Have you ever been around chickens KK? They suck in a major way. They smell, they are annoying, and unless you're bringing in feed, need land to graze.

I'm tempted to grow me own Spuds this year.
All I need is a Waterbutt or similar from the Garden Centre. Fill it with Compost and that, seed it, and watch them grow. In theory, as long as some are left in, and I keep the soil fresh, I will continue to get a crop.
I love Spuds me. Mash them, chip them, boil them, bake them. So ubiquitous!
And seeing how they go, I might try Carrots and that later on.
