I'm looking for technical data, or images, or anything in regards to the different ships that a Space Marine chapter would have.

  • Battlebarge

  • Strike Cruiser

  • Frigate (Gladius & Nova class)

  • Hunter Destroyer

  • I've managed to find a few images of each (including the Battlefleet Gothic models). I want to scratch build something for my Blood Angels, and I don't wager that I can build anything like that to 28mm scale. But I like big projects and wouldn't be against building a 6' long (2m for those outside the Imperial measurement system) Stirke Cruiser. It might even be reasonable to build something scale to Epic! It would be pretty cool to throw some Epic Thunderhawks departing from it! But I just can't find any information out there, I would consider buying BFG if it has all the information I need.

Any help, or suggestion to another thread I should try would be appreciated.

Well, BFG/Armada does have illustrations in the rulebook and it has the weapons load-out for BFG, not sure what technical data you'd need.

You can see the BFG rulebooks here:

Technical as in scale really, I was thinking about the Star Wars blue prints I have and how if I had one for 40K it would be perfect. Maybe I'll have to make one.

Yeah, I don't believe such technical blueprints have been unleashed by GW.

Regarding size, a 28mm scale strike cruiser would be larger than 6' by 2' as a strike cruiser is designed to carry a whole company plus associated drop pods rhinos, thunderhawks (and thawk transporters) and munitions, then, on top of that it has its own armaments. If i had to guess, and it would be an epic guess, i'd scale (28mm) strike cruiser at at least 4' by 10', maybe more.

Starship Dimensions seems to be pretty well-researched. You're not going to be able to build anything larger than an escort in 40K scale, unless you have a warehouse to put your model in.

That should help you determine scale if you use this as a reference to whatever class you're building.

    Nice, thanks Smashotron.

And I've seen that image Pariah Press, but I didn't know that they update with new ships, I'll have to explore that to see if they're got any 40K stuff.

Just because I wanted to crunch the numbers...

If you wanted to do 28mm 40K scale Cobra destroyer...

    1500 meters = Just over 4921 feet
28mm figures are approx 1/64 scale
    4921/64 = Nearly 77 feet long!

The same ship in 6mm Epic scale...

    6mm figs are 1/285 scale
4921/285 = Still just over 17 feet long!

Just goes to show how massive these ships are!

This wasn't to discourage you though. I think it's a cool idea!
Relative scale is what's important. As long as it looks good when presented, who cares?

I've found that scale to be off. A Cobra class escort being nearly a mile long is just ridiculous. I'm discussed why in the fluff section, so I'm not gonna go over it here again.

There is no true scale system that GW has canonically enforced. Books have qouted differant sizes for the same class ships before. Nothing is set in stone. I would say though that if you where planning on building something to scale for Epic, 6' for a strike cruiser might be a bit excessive.

I don't know what a Cobra Destroyer is (I mean I see the picture, but I haven't seen that class listed with the others), but that's some impressive numbers either way. I think maybe I'll just buy a few different sci-fi model kits (like the melieium falcon, that has some really great parts), and make a small one first that I could just hang from the ceiling.

Although now... Hmm, what do you think about this.

I'm remodeling my house, I was going to make an entertainment room with built in stuff, but if I made one of the wall section to hold my Blood Angels, I could build a ship into the wall. A profile that has deployment doors which open to reveal my army? Wow, that would be great, but I don't know if I should do something like that built-in.

28mm scale is 1/56. Doesn't make much difference to the size of a spaceship though.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
