Having read articles like this and similar, I was wondering what our American brethren thought of the visit/speech, or perhaps more if you even knew/noticed that he was there at all.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

I'll tell you what I see to be the real genius of this.

Whereas the Blair/Bush alliance was more one of military convenience, the Brown/Obama alliance has managed, quite astoundingly, to shake this off already, emerging as one of apparent global responsibility. Quite a change from the Bush declaration of 'with us or against us' which lets face it, was a veiled threat. Add in that Gordon Brown had a fairly terse relationship with Dubya, and I feel the spectres of the past are very much being actively laid to rest.

In fairness Brown has a terse relationship with everyone.

Given the awkward political dynamic caused by some poor decisions made during the end of the Major regime, I'm quite surprised that there's much (any) mutual backslapping betwixt the two nations anyhow. The relationship between Blair and Bush seemed totally out of left field but it seems they do genuinely get along ( despite Cherie's best efforts sometimes ) in a manner that reminded me of Maggie and Ronnie more than anything else.

True.

Still makes me laugh that the best the Tories can come up with is that he's not elected.

Thankfully in Britain, we elect a Party, not a Person. Plus the Tories are one to talk. Major. Churchill, both unelected, so it's hardly a first.

Me, I have a lot of time for Gordon Brown. Unlike when you are in opposition, your policies have to be carefully thought out when the ruling party. Thus the opposition always gets to wait and see if it fails before going on the attack....

Despite my dislike for many of the Tories past actions, policies and individuals, I do wish they could get their act together a bit better though, "the system" only really works when there's an effective opposition and it often seems these days the two main parties almost stumble over each other in their haste to agree.

I'm sorry here in America if it doesn't cause controversy we completely miss it. We simply don't know the reason for reporting friendly meetings. Now if you ask us about a scandel then we can talk.

And whilst you're pointing and shouting at the boogeyman in the corner, you're missing the burglar coming in through the window.

Well, Duh! Because they had a giant Mining ship. If you had a giant mining ship you would drill holes in everything too, before you'd destory it with a black hole

I knew Brown was over here by reading a blurb on Guardian on-line, but I missed his speech entirely. The man has absolutely zero charisma and makes a terrible party leader/prime minister. Having said that, I really don't know who the Tories and Lib Dems have in that spot either. I liked the Lib Dems under Kennedy because of the whole charisma 'guy I'd have a beer with' thing, but the non-education related policies were full of fail.

well, more than one in all probability eh ?

Brown does often seem to have had a charisma bypass. I think he's one of those politicians from a different age : kind of bewildered that people somehow care more for what you look like than rather what you really think or do.

The Cons. are currently led by David "call me Dave" Cameron : a nice enough guy....and given recent events that's all I'll say about him. Time and a place you dig, it's not right to kick a man when he's down.

The libs are led, seemingly, by Noah, of "the Ark" fame. Except of course people have heard of Noah.

Dave Cameron? I think her used to be my local MP back when I was living in England. I never thought he'd amount to much.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you the problem with modern politics. It's this sort of thinking tht leads to Arnie running California and a bumbling villiage idiot running London. I hate, but accept, that charisma and charm are far more important than policy and intelligence in political leaders, give me charmless Gordon over vacuous 'Dave' anyday. America's lucky to have that rare mix of intelligence and charm in power at the mo.

Hey! I resemble that remark. More seriously, I hate the fact that charisma is now more important than intelligence/policy in politics, but I accept that that is the way things work right now. I wish I could change it and I generally vote based on different platforms and don't stick to any one party. (Though I think both times I voted for an MEP I voted for the Lib Dem candidate...)

Actually Arnie's not that bad of a Governor. He's hampered by the insane rules that we Californians have inflicted on ourselves but he's still done a pretty decent job. He was smart enough to realize he wasn't smart enough and put together a bang up group of advisers.
