I have just recently got the black reach set and am now learning what to do and how to paint the figures ect..
I am very new to this so excuse me if this come off dumb. I like the armies in the black reach set but i decided to go with the chaos marines as my army of choice. I purchased some from ebay and just got them in the mail. They are from 1996 - 1997 and are metal with some plastic parts. I am wondering if I didn't make a mistake. Are these still playable? Or did I get taken? Would they still be legal I guess is the better way to put it.
Also, they didn't come with bases so they can stand up. Did I miss something there?
I'll say thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions. Thanks

Metal chaos with some plastic parts is not very descriptive. What type are they? They are probably still playable, but you need bases.

Yes , you can play with them. They MAY be of types that are no longer in the Chaos codex , but they can be used as proxies as long as you clearly explain what they are to your opponent.
Have fun !!

Now , I will show them why they fear the night. |

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I looked at the labels on the packaging and all they say is chaos space marine w/ laser cannon, missile launcher, ect.. One of them does say obliterators on it. I think from now on I'll stick to the newer figures. Sucks though, there are 10 of them.
Who knew they wouldn't come with bases. Sounds like a very important part to leave out. LOL.
Thanks again.

I have models that was made in 1986, still in my army. It works well as long as I remember to tell my opponent: "This is a marine with a plasmacannon" or "This squad looks strange with all sorts of weapons, but I play them as imperial guards with lasguns."
It's excellent fun to use old figures to play with today. Here on Dakka you will find a lot of beautiful armies wth a lot of old models used in creative ways. And since you are creating a chaos force, it can look really great with a lot of different types of models in the army.
If you have a Friendly Local Game Store in your area you should go there and talk a bit to them. They can help you out with getting bases for your models and showing how to do things is always easier than typing...
Good luck, and lots of pleasure to you!

Keep those! glue them up and paint them. They are valuable parts of a chaos army.

Figures are only important in the "game-legal" sense if you want to use them at a tournament or in a GW store then only GW figures are 'legal', outside that anything goes within the bounds of common sense and politeness.
Some older figures aren't supported though, races that no longer have rules, or weapon~model combinations that are no longer supported, some older figures will be carrying guns they are no longer allowed to under current rules. You can either convert these older figures to match the current rules, or you can use them as they are, but make it very clear to your opponent what everything is supposed to be (it's a proxy).
Some people take very old and unsupported figures like Squats (Space Dwarves) and play with them using the Space Marine or Imperial Guard list, this is legitimate even in a Tournament because they are genuine GW miniatures. Most normal people are ok with this as long as they aren't deliberately misleading and that as you don't take the piss with your proxies, ie, asking people to think that a man with a plasma gun is actually holding a lascannon, or that a bottle of tomato sauce is your space marine commander.
Hope that is a help, very few figures need go to waste, they can usually be used in one form or another no matter how old.
