Brand new to the hobby/table top gaming in general, I decided to start with the AoBR kit and some of the paints they list on the GW tutorials to see if it would be something I could spend money/time on instead of drinking. FedEx dropped of six pounds of goodness on monday, and I think I have found my new hobby. I was really worried that I would be a complete failure with the painting aspects, and threw a decent chunk of cash down the drain. While I'm not blown away with my first batch, I am pretty satisfied. I made the mistake of not buying any washes, and I am basing models by hand with the undercoat foundation black which might be a mistake. For the most part I am just learning/practicing drybrushing and basic techniques so I can try to build a real army that I can be proud of in the near future. CnC more than welcome, also any Dallas/Ft Worth gamers hit me up!
The picture quality on these is crap btw, all I had on hand was the webcam on my macbook.

I painted the sarge and dread after the tactical squad. They turned out a little better.

Different lighting, same result.

Nice, looks like you are off to a good start.

you need to post some better pics for us to give real critique.

why are your images mirrored ? Heineken bottle is backwards and your sergeant points right where mine points left. (maybe its a Mac thing )

keep up the good work and post more pics

Yeah, I noticed that, not sure why it's mirrored. I am trying to get better pics now.

Great start, as far as the pics go, getting good pics of your figs is a whole new hobby in itself. Head over to the articles section lots of good info in there about taking pics.

Sweet jesus..those are your first mini's? Ever? Pretty good for a first go. Just a nice clean paint job such as yours is the envy of many painters.

Also, which part of DFW are you in? I drive to McKinney at least once a month and would love to hit you up for a game.

From what I can make out, it seems they are pretty clean. Good wash goes a long way.

Welcome to the hobby! From the pics what I can tell is your off to a pretty good start. AOBR is a great and mostly inexpensive way to start the hobby.*COUGHGIVE ME THE ORKS COUGH*
Seriously tho I think youll be ok basing them the way you are. The easiest is some cheap black primer spray paint. Lots of people use krylon or an variation of that style paint. Personally I use cheap $ store primer as its thinner and fills in the small parts better. Anywho nice work so far and good luck figuring out better picture taking.

Great start there from what can be seen from the photos.

You seem to have done clean and crisp painting and marines are good minis to start with, nice surfaces with no tiny details to paint. They can be painted to a good looking army with the basic techniques.

RadBob wrote:I made the mistake of not buying any washes, and I am basing models by hand with the undercoat foundation black which might be a mistake.

You do know that you can dilute normal paints with water to washes? I haven't done it with the foundation paints but with normal GW paints this can be done easily. And don't worry about the undercoating, I haven't bothered with undercoating plastic for some years now and haven't had problems with paint chipping.

Yeah I'm working on the right mixture for the homemade washes. I finished the last three marines for my tac squad, and they look alot better than my first bunch. I think it is time to start on the orks. If I can get some better pics, I'll put em up.
On a side note, I am starting to think about ordering some models to start my real army, and I'm torn between CSM, Space Wolves, or Inquisition.

Space wolves don't have up to date codex, the latest is from 3rd edition 40k so its over 5 years old. It is ok, but has some interesting rules, which don't work as they should in the current edition. Are you thinking about witch hunters or daemon hunters on the inq side? CSM is always a safe bet as they have dex in every edition being one of the core armies.

Great job on the models! CSM are a lot of fun because you can do just about anything with them, painting and conversion-wise, and it seems like you're spot on with the painting.

to be honest, thats an amazing start since thats the 1st mini you have painted, a little bit more practice and some washes and your painting will be good.

also, is it true we now have someone on dakka that doesent know thier left and rights?

incase your wondering, the pic has flipped the models.
hence the dreads arms.

life.

i would suggest a # buck can of krylon flat black for undercoating. saved me lots of money. if you want, they also have flat white and grey.

also, get some clear matte spray from krylon as well. varnish like that protects your mini's.

all the cans mentioned can be found at places like walmart and home depot.

I collect:

Grand alliance death (whole alliance)

Stormcast eternals

Slaves to Darkness - currently Nurgle but may expand to undivided.

Looked at the beer bottle did you Jd. In the reversed pic he was pointing with his right hand not left hand so normally it is left.
I glanced at the dread thought it might have fw parts. Then you mentioned they were reversed looked at the beer bottle well gee that is spelled funny.

I messed around with lighting etc. and got some better(still mirrored) pics. These are probably the last ones I'm going to put up until I can get someone to lend me a dig. camera. I might try again once I get my squad of sluggaz done, but the problem is definitely more about the camera than light, zoom etc. The mac camera has absolutely no options, you can't even turn the flash off, and it inverts everything.
Anyway I ended up spray priming these guys in the bathroom. I don't have any good space outdoors, so I just taped some newspaper to the walls, turned on all the fans and went to it. The smell was briefly annoying but time wise it was worth it.
I am looking for suggestions on paint mixing, the only green I have is the foundation knarloc, and aside from going darker to lighter I'm clueless about mixing/ork schemes.
